Welcome to National Clam Chowder Day!

There are few things as comforting as a bowl of warm clam chowder on a winter’s day, so it’s wonderful we get to celebrate National Clam Chowder Day on February 25. Originally considered a poor man’s food, the first chowders were fish stews made from vegetable and fish stewed in a large pot or cauldron. (The word “chowder” possibly finds its roots in the Latin word “calderia,” or cooking pot.) Clams are thought to have been introduced to the mix by the Native Americans and by the mid 1800’s were considered a main ingredient in what came to be known as clam chowder. Today, there are dozens of regional variations, including San Francisco clam chowder which comes in a sourdough bread bowl! There are few things as comforting as a bowl of warm clam chowder on a winter’s day, so it’s wonderful we get to celebrate National Clam Chowder Day on February 25. Three Big Takeaways From Syracuse’s Loss Against Duke – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Saturday was overwhelming for more reasons than you can count on one hand. That was before the game was even played. Through all the noise, there was 40 minutes of basketball that said a lot about Syracuse in its loss against Duke.

Moment(s) Were Not Too Big

For the most part, it felt like Syracuse put the distractions of the week to the side. From questions looming over Jim Boeheim’s potential absence, to Zion Williamson being sidelined, to the numerous stars and numerous fans in attendance for the game, the Orange could have had a lot of reasons for butterflies. But Syracuse responded to the challenge in the first half by entering the locker rooms with a five point lead. That shows that distractions were put to the side. The only problem was that Duke’s talent took over. R.J. Barrett proved why he was the top prospect in the county with his 30 point performance. Talent crushed Syracuse in the second half, not the pressure.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange shows grit and heart in Duke loss (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad fell a bit short versus No. 1 Duke on Saturday, but ‘Cuse Nation came together, and that’s what matters the most.
Given what has transpired over the past few days, it’s difficult to focus on the sport of college basketball itself, because the fragility and preciousness of life have of course taken center stage. Despite an SU community that is grieving and will remain in shock for quite some time, the Orange hoops outfit put forth a valiant effort on Saturday night in Central New York.

Syracuse didn’t beat No. 1 Duke in front of an NCAA record-setting crowd, but the ‘Cuse roster and its heart-broken head coach, Jim Boeheim, shouldn’t feel ashamed whatsoever about the ultimate outcome. Not in the least. That’s because the fact that they competed so well, and Boeheim found himself on the sidelines, should prove more than enough of a win for every SU fan out there.

Syracuse Basketball: Frank Howard will return to his natural position says Jim Boeheim (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim will be putting Frank Howard back at his natural position. Here are the details and what it all means.

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim usually is stuck in his ways. That’s usually for good reason because he has manned the position for the last 43 years and has had a lot of success. But every once in a while change is good, Boeheim is hoping that’s the case with senior guard Frank Howard.

Since Howard has returned from injury, Boeheim has been asked nearly on a weekly basis what is wrong with Frank?

Beyond the arc: Zion-less Duke men’s basketball squad handles Syracuse on the road (dukechronicle.com; Smith)

Duke came into Saturday not having lost on a Saturday nor in their lucky black uniforms. Both streaks stood intact as the shorthanded Blue Devils pulled away late to beat Syracuse 75-65. The Blue Zone takes a look at three key takeaways and stats from the game and previews what’s to come:

Three key takeaways:

1. Alex O’Connell can't miss

Needing a scoring burst from a role player with Zion Williamson nursing his sprained knee, O’Connell stepped up in a big way in his second career start, tallying 20 points off of five 3-pointers. The sophomore also contributed the biggest play of the game, knocking down a four-point play from the corner with Syracuse holding a two-point advantage, giving the Blue Devils the lead for good.

2. Joey Baker burns his redshirt

Being the fifth and often overlooked member of the heralded Duke freshman class, Baker was expected to spend the year bulking up and getting good practice against future NBA lottery picks while he used his redshirt. With the Blue Devils beginning the game 1-for-7 from deep, Mike Krzyzewski decided to burn the North Carolina native’s extra year of eligibility to add some much needed sharpshooting skills and go all in for his sixth national title. Baker would miss his only field goal attempt, but notched two rebounds in five minutes of action.

3. Defense takes a stand

The last time these two faced off back in January, the Blue Devils struggled to shoot, but it was nowhere near how much they got torched on the defensive end after Tre Jones went down early in that matchup. Tyus Battle was limited to just 16 points on Saturday night, half as many as he scored in Cameron. The Orange were also held to 20 points less on Saturday compared to the January meeting.

ACC Selection Sunday Outlook: locks and bubbles abound (tonahawwknation.com; Minnick)

With three weeks to go before Selection Sunday, clear lines of demarcation have emerged. The ACC appears all but guaranteed to receive at least six invitations to the Big Dance, but the potential is out there for up to nine. The ACC Tournament is shaping up to be a doozy.

***Author’s note: Starting this year the NCAA has “eliminated” the RPI and is now using an efficiency based rating system referred to as NET. Much has been written about the NET’s faults, most notably that it uses raw efficiency instead of adjusting for the relative strength of the opponent. Nonetheless, it’s still an improvement from the RPI and will be the primary tool used by the NCAA selection committee, and it’s the only metric that will be used to determine the win quadrants for each team.

While NET is the primary tool, additional data points will be listed on the team sheets presented to selection committee members during their deliberations. This includes, but is not limited to, KenPom rankings and a team’s SOS as determined by the old school RPI (now you see why I put eliminated in quotation marks...). Accordingly, in parentheses next to each team I have included their current NET rank, KenPom rank, and SOS rank, in that order. Also, within each tier teams are listed in descending order of their latest NET rank.

ACC Roundup - NC State Moves Closer To An NCAA Bid (DBR; King)

Not surprisingly, NC State beat Wake Forest in Raleigh Sunday night, 94-74.

Markell Johnson had 25 points, six rebounds and three assists to pace the Pack, a performance that coach Kevin Keatts called “special.”

Wake just couldn’t stop him. Johnson shot 9-13 overall and 6-9 from deep.

To an extent that’s understandable because he’s really good. It’s harder to understand how State, starting four guards, out-rebounded Wake Forest 47-37.

It’s just more of the same really. Wake is a proud program that right now is just not very good. With four regular season games left the Demon Deacons are 10-16.

None of those games are going to be easy. Wake gets Miami, Syracuse and Florida State at home and Duke in Cameron.

Depending on how much heart the team has left, it could be down to just five games and then the school will have to decide what to do about Danny Manning. If he’s retained the fan base may continue to drift away. And if he’s not, A.D. Ron Wellman will be under a microscope. He’s made two poor hires in a row. He can’t afford a third and neither can Wake Forest.

ACC Basketball Storylines: North Carolina creates three-way tie at the top (bustingbrackets.com; Anderson)

There were some statement wins in ACC basketball from some top teams this past weekend. Here’s a look at the biggest takeaways from another week.
As the ACC basketball regular season schedule slowly comes to a close, there’s been an interesting shift among the three tiers of the league. In what’s been considered “Tier 1” of the ACC standings, the league’s top three teams are currently all keeping pace with each other with records of 11-2.

In “Tier 2”, the Virginia Tech Hokies have become the first team to reach 10 victories while below them, the Florida State Seminoles, Syracuse Orange, and Louisville Cardinals are all battling for position. Not to be forgotten, given their current bubble status, then are the Clemson Tigers and NC State Wolfpack following after.

Strong winds rip down scaffolding on Syracuse building (PS; Mulder)

High winds knocked down scaffolding Sunday night on a building under construction on North Townsend Street near Butternut Street.

The building is near the emergency room of St. Joseph’s Hospital. The section of North Townsend near the building is closed to traffic.

Officials from the Syracuse Fire Department and National Grid were at the scene this morning.
The damage knocked out electric power in the neighborhood. National Grid reported nearly 100 customers in the neighborhood are still without power this morning. The utility estimates electric service will be restored by 4 p.m.

Onondaga County 911 was notified of the damage at about 10:10 p.m. Sunday. There were no reports of injuries.
