Welcome to Commonwealth Day!

Commonwealth Day celebrates the Commonwealth of Nations. Most of the states in the Commonwealth are former members of the British Empire. A multi-faith service traditionally takes place in Westminster Abbey on the day, being attended by many dignataries, usually including the Head of the Commonwealth—who as of 2018 has long been Queen Elizabeth II. She delivers an address that is broadcasted around the world. In some countries, the Queen's message is read aloud instead of being listened to. The Union Jack flag is flown, and many Commonwealth countries have flag-raising ceremonies, programs, and assemblies. Each year there is a new theme to go with the day. It is a public holiday in many Commonwealth countries, but not in all.

SU basketball signee Joe Girard III leads Glens Falls to state final four (PS; Weidner)

Syracuse recruit Joe Girard III led the Glens Falls Indians to a berth in the state Class B final four tonight, scoring 46 points in an 84-76 victory over Ogdensburg in a playoff regional final.

The 6-foot-2 guard overcame a slow start - scoring just five points in the first quarter - before adding 41 more over the next 24 minutes.

Here’s a story in the Glens Falls Post-Star

Syracuse Basketball lacked heart, grit, and toughness in loss to Clemson (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball program yet again led after 20 minutes against an ACC foe, but then the ‘Cuse proved horrendous in falling to Clemson.

Another second-half collapse by the Syracuse basketball squad resulted in a missed opportunity to all but clinch a Big Dance invite, as the Orange totally fell apart after intermission and lost to fellow bubble bunch Clemson, 67-55, on Saturday afternoon.

In recent setbacks to top-five crews Duke, North Carolina and Virginia, SU (19-12, 10-8) had an advantage over each of them going into the break. The same held true versus the Tigers (19-12, 9-9) at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Previewing the ACC Tournament and Syracuse’s Path to a Conference Title – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

Well, that’s certainly not the end to the regular season we envisioned or the result SU was looking for. Blowing yet another halftime lead and dropping the final game of the regular season to Clemson probably wasn’t what Jim Boeheim had drawn up to improve the Orange’s NCAA Tournament resume, but the season is far from over.

Syracuse now turns its attention to the ACC Tournament that gets underway on Tuesday and after picking up its first ever win in the ACC Tournament against Wake Forest a year ago, they’re looking to build a bit of momentum heading into tourney time. The loss to Clemson wound up not hurting the Orange in terms of seeding and they still locked up a single-bye and the sixth seed in the tournament. But the road ahead is not an easy one.

ACC is so talented this season that some lottery picks... (theathletic.com; Glenn)

On the final weekend of college basketball’s regular season, the ACC had three of the top four teams in the Associated Press poll, and five of the Top 25.

When the NCAA Tournament begins, Virginia, North Carolina and Duke all likely will be No. 1 or No. 2 seeds. Florida State, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Syracuse look dangerous, too.

If Clemson and NC State can make the Big Dance as well, the ACC will tie its all-time record with nine participants. (That also occurred in 2017 and 2018.) In all likelihood, even at eight, no other league would have more entries.

Looking back, remember, the ACC’s 15 current members collectively have been winning the NCAA championship half the time lately, with one of the past two, two of the past four, three of the past six, five of the past 10, etc.

Such accomplishments require quality coaches, and special players.

How good is the ACC’s talent level this year? Several players who fell short of the...

5 reasons why splitting New York would be a disaster for Upstate (PS; Weiner)

A group of Upstate New York lawmakers this winter revived a question that has been raised periodically for decades: Should the region split from the rest of New York and become its own state?

Assemblyman Stephen Hawley, R-Batavia, wants New Yorkers to vote on a referendum that would create a 51st state out of the counties north of New York City and its suburbs.

Separately, state Sen. Daphne Jordan, a Republican from Saratoga County, proposed examining the costs of separating the two regions to see if the idea makes economic sense.

The lawmakers have gained political support from some Upstate New Yorkers who feel voiceless with Democrats holding one-party rule of the state Legislature and the governor’s mansion for only the second time since World War II.

But politics aside, studies show the split into two states would likely be an economic disaster for Upstate New York, experts say. The region simply depends too heavily on taxes and fees paid by wealthy residents and corporations in New York City and its suburbs.
