Welcome to Earmuff Day!

The beginning of spring is often the last blows of the reign of winter terror, one moment you can be basking in the shining warmth of the returning sun, and the next it’s literally freezing out and biting rain and snow is pounding your poor ears to iceberg lettuce. Thankfully one masterful Chester Greenwood came up with a solution for this untrustworthy and frankly conniving weather that allows you to abandon the hats of winter for a far more comfortable and practical bit of headwear. Chester Greenwood is the man who invented that most remarkable of purpose specific headgear, the earmuff!

Now, Mr. Greenwood was simply looking for a way to keep our ears warm in the cold winter months, he couldn’t have possibly imagined all the purposes this seemingly simple and innocent piece of headgear would be turned to. Now what was the “earmuff” is called the “thermal earmuff”, and has been joined by the “acoustic earmuff”. In case that doesn’t tell you straight-away what they are, these are the heavy-duty sound dampeners worn by construction site workers the world over. These are much more effective than the simpler earplug, and really serve to save your ears!

Syracuse basketball vs. Pittsburgh: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange will meet a familiar foe in the ACC tournament.

Syracuse will face former Big East foe Pittsburgh in the tournament's second round on Wednesday night at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.

In addition to the old Big East feel of Wednesday's game, this will also be the third meeting of the season between SU and Pitt. Syracuse swept the season series.

Syracuse is the No. 6 seed after finishing the regular season with a 19-12 overall record and a 10-6 ACC mark.

Pittsburgh, the No. 14 seed, knocked off No. 11 seed Boston College 80-70 in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday night.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse have met once in the ACC tournament since joining the league. The Panthers came away with a 72-71 win in the 2016 tournament in Washington D.C.

Here are 10 things to watch for as the Orange and the Panthers prepare to meet again.

Going for the sweep

Syracuse is going to have to buck the old adage of how it's hard to beat a team three times in the same season.

Since the 2000-01 season, Syracuse has met a team for a third time in the post-season after sweeping the season series four times. Syracuse has split those third games.

How a bromance between Jim Boeheim, Adam Weitsman created Syracuse’s most visible fan (PS; Carlson)

Adam Weitsman and Jim Boeheim were exchanging text messages. The businessman was finishing lunch at P.F. Chang’s. The head coach happened to be hungry.

Like a good friend, Weitsman came through with General Tso’s chicken. Like a good friend, Boeheim invited him inside.

At that particular moment, inside meant the Melo Center, where the Syracuse men’s basketball team would soon be practicing.

It is the type of moment that one of Central New York’s most high-profile friendships is built on, a totally normal, natural and everyday connection between a Hall of Fame basketball coach and the owner of the East Coast’s largest privately owned scrap metal and recycling center.

“He was hungry, so I brought him some lunch,” Weitsman said. “We fight about which restaurants we like. We talk about family. Dumb stuff. It’s just a real relationship. It’s about everyday stuff.”

Syracuse basketball commit Joe Girard III named New York’s Mr. Basketball (PS; Curtis)

Glens Falls guard Joe Girard III was named Mr. Basketball by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York on Tuesday.

Ossining’s Aubrey Griffin was selected Miss Basketball.

Girard, who will play at Syracuse next season, averaged 49 points per game and eclipsed the 4,000-point mark this season, becoming the highest-scoring player in New York State history. He also led Glens Falls to a Section II championship. Girard will lead his team against Olean in the NYSPHSAA Class B state semifinal in Binghamton on Friday.

Roth: In NCAAs or not, Syracuse needs to find its game before it's too late (D&C; Roth)

Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim believes sugar is for cornflakes.

It’s not meant to coat answers to difficult questions.

His succinct responses following his team’s 67-55 loss to Clemson on Saturday that wrapped up the regular-season schedule was classic J.B. — Jim Bluntheim.

Heading into this week’s ACC Tournament, the Orange could have used a momentum-restoring Quadrant 1 win against the Tigers, who they beat by eight points in January.

Instead, they struggled yet again at both ends of the court, leaving Orange Nation without any elation and feeling plenty of frustration.

Boeheim joined them.

On the key to the game: “Their defense was just better than our offense.’’

On second-leading scorer Elijah Hughes playing just 11 minutes and finishing with zero points: “He just showed nothing. He still can’t make plays off the dribble, which you have to do when being guarded that close, and he just didn’t do that.’’

On blowing another halftime lead, the fourth time in five games it happened: “It’s absolutely irrelevant. The better team is going to win in the long run.’’

On guards Tyus Battle and Frank Howard needing to do more of everything: “They’re veteran guys and obviously we need them to play better.’’

Buzz Williams wasn’t necessarily attempting to predict the future two weeks ago, but the Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach proved most prescient anyway when answering a question about his chances of being named ACC coach of the year.

The Hokies had just upset then-No. 3 Duke and were on the way to their most conference wins in school history, overcoming a severely compromised roster that has been without starting point guard Justin Robinson for essentially the past 10 games.

Still, Williams was skeptical, pointing to 2015-16, when he directed the Hokies to a 10-8 conference record after going 2-16 the previous season, matching the largest increase in wins by any ACC program.

Miami’s Jim Larranaga instead wound up being selected ACC coach of the year after the Hurricanes went 13-5.

ACC Tournament Game 1 Preview: Clemson vs. NCSU (shakinthesouthland.com; Craft)

When: Wednesday 12pm
Where: Charlotte
TV: ESPN

The roller coaster basketball season is reaching its apex as the Tigers enter the ACC tournament at 9-9 and the 9th seed. The Tigers have been playing much better basketball as a whole down the stretch, but near misses against North Carolina and Louisville make this game with NC State a probably must-win for NCAA tournament hopes. My Wofford Terriers helped the cause by finishing the Southern Conference Championship last night, but losses in the finals by Lipscomb and Radford in their tournaments hurt a little. Wofford is the biggest deal because they would have been in either way, so their win keeps UNCG out and frees up an at large spot. Clemson needs to take the guess work out by winning Wednesday.

Clemson fans remember well the last meeting with the Wolfpack when the Tigers blew a golden opportunity for a quadrant 1 road win, losing on a very deep three at the buzzer after the usually clutch Marcquise Reed missed four straight free throws for probably the first time in many years. Reed was “honored” as 3rd team All-ACC yesterday, but he clearly felt it a slight as do most who have paid attention to his stellar play. I fully expect Reed to use this stage as a way of showing the ACC writers he is better than they thought.

New Syracuse restaurant offering Rochester garbage plates with a farm-to-table twist (PS; Pucci)

You may have eaten a garbage plate, the awe-inspiring concoction of home fries and macaroni salad, topped with burgers or hot dogs and slathered with meat sauce and chopped onions, that’s something of a cult favorite around Rochester.

But what about a farm-to-table garbage plate made with local ingredients? That’s the novel concept The Brine Well Eatery is bringing to downtown Syracuse.

The restaurant, slated to open in April, is located in the former site of Creole Soul Cafe at 128 E. Jefferson St.

Owner Devon Hubbard, 31, has worked with food for much of his life—most recently running a Chipotle Mexican Grill location as a restaurateur. But the Cicero-North Syracuse grad has spent time in Rochester and wanted to bring a taste back to Syracuse.

“I decided I wanted to follow my dream,” Hubbard said.

He hired chef Sarah Hassler, whose resume includes stops leading the kitchens at The Stoop and Peppino’s Neapolitan, as a consultant. Together, they built a menu that’s built around a variety of plates. The Rochester plate is the classic, but then there’s the Syracuse plate, a combination of smashed salt potatoes and baked beans, topped with Hofmann hot dogs, pickles, honey mustard and homemade bacon jam, paired with a cold Byrne Dairy chocolate milk.

Cool video about Chukwu. It must really be hard for him being so far from home. But unlike Dolezaj, Chukwu hasn’t gone home since he started at SU.
