Happy April Fools' Day!

It isn't exactly known how the day started. One prominent theory says that it started in France in 1564, after New Year's Day was changed to January 1 that year. Those who wanted to continue celebrating the old new year around Easter became known as "April fools," and tricks and jokes were commonly played on them. Although France started beginning their years on January 1 in 1564, they didn't adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1582, and some sources claim this may have been the year that April Fools' Day started. Either way, an early prank in France was to put a paper fish, known as a poisson d’avril, meaning "April fish," on someone's back. It represented an easily caught fish, which was a symbol for someone who is gullible. The tradition still takes place today.

A 2019-20 Syracuse basketball wish list - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Wouldn’t we love it if we could get everything we want? Here’s what I’d want from the 2019-20 Syracuse basketball team, broken down by player:

Buddy Boeheim: Boeheim starts the season on a roll and with the exception of one game here and there emerges as one of the ACC’s best shooters. He averages over 12 points a game, establishing himself as the third offensive option.

John Bol Ajak: Ajak shows the most promise of any raw big man Syracuse has had in recent history, and is able to give SU 10 solid minutes a game. His offensive game is surprisingly competent, and he’s able to hit a few 10-foot jumper to keep defenses honest.

Robert Braswell: Braswell packs on 15 pounds of muscle over the summer while continuing to refine his outside shot. He provides 15 minutes a game at wing, and becomes an effective help-side shotblocker.

Oshae Brissett: Brissett gets back to his roots, and remembers that he is a high-energy rebounder that does the majority of his damage inside the paint. He stops settling for long jumpers and 3-pointers, only shooting them when completely uncontested.

Jalen Carey: Carey’s ball handling improves tremendously over the summer and he plays more than 30 minutes a game as SU’s point guard. Carey uses his quick first step to set up his teammates for open looks and becomes a nightmare for opponents at the top of the zone, averaging over two steals per game.

Marek Dolezaj: Dolezaj packs on 15 pounds of muscle (see Braswell) and has the ability to play 10 minutes of center and 20 minutes at wing per game. He becomes emboldened in his offensive game, and stuffs the stat sheet with an average of 9.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.0 steals per game.

Syracuse Basketball: Top 10 things we wish were April Fools’ jokes (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Here are the top 10 things regarding Syracuse basketball WE WISH were April Fools’ jokes but absolutely weren’t in 2018-19.

To put it lightly, the 2018-19 season for the Syracuse basketball squad was a tad crazy. That applies to things both on and off the basketball court. Some things were so crazy that if I would’ve told you them before the season you likely wouldn’t have believed it.

Michigan State decks Duke, advances to Final Four (wtkr.com; Winkler)

For the fifth straight year, the NCAA Tournament's number one overall seed fails to win the title. Sunday, Michigan State squeaks by Duke, 68-67 to win the East Region title.

It's the eighth time Michigan State is in the Final Four under head coach Tom Izzo.

The Blue Devils' desire to play with fire ends up burning them. After winning its previous two NCAA Tournament games by a combined three points, Duke's dramatics flame out in the Elite Eight.

NCAA Tournament money: Big Ten gets most, SEC sets own high (AP; Russo)

The Southeastern Conference made a concerted effort three years ago to improve the quality of basketball in a league known for football — and it has paid off.

With Auburn off to the Final Four after beating Kentucky in overtime on Sunday, the SEC earned at least $32.1 million through the NCAA’s system for paying conferences based on how their teams perform in the men’s basketball tournament. It’s the highest share for the SEC at 19 units, the term the NCAA uses for the bids and wins that qualify for payment, all the way through the Elite Eight.

The SEC’s best showing was good for third place among conferences this year, behind the Big Ten (21 units for at least $35.5 million) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (20 units for at least $33.8 million). The Big Ten and ACC tied with 13 wins each, but the Big Ten placed one more team in the field of 68.

Adam Weitsman’s new Skaneateles restaurant preparing to open (PS; Doran)

The Elephant and the Dove, Adam Weitsman’s new restaurant located in the heart of Skaneateles, is preparing to open in mid-April.

Weitsman said the finishing touches are being put on the Mexican restaurant, located in a 7,500-square-foot historic building at 9 Genesee St. The restaurant will offer hearty portions of Mexican food at an affordable price, Weitsman said.

"This is something different from the Krebs (Weitsman’s other Skaneateles restaurant) because it will be low-key,'' Weitsman said. “The idea is you can come in shorts, and be comfortable.”
The restaurant’s name is derived from Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who were married and nicknamed the elephant and the dove.

Weitsman owns Upstate Shredding, the largest privately-owned scrap processor on the East Coast. His wife, Kim, runs the Krebs, an upscale restaurant in the village.
