Welcome to National Zipper Day!

National Zipper Day is observed each year on April 29th. This day celebrates something that we often do not think about and just automatically take for granted.

It was first in 1851 that Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine, received a patent for an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure.” Howe never made an attempt to market his invention and missed the recognition he may have received.

Forty-two years later, Whitcomb Judson began selling the “Clasp Locker.” Being very similar to Elias Howe’s patent, this device served as a more complicated hook-and-eye shoe fastener. Judson started the Universal Fastener Company where he manufactured his new device and debuted it at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 but was met with little success. Because Judson put his invention before the public for sale, he earned credit as its creator.

In 1906, Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American electrical engineer, was hired to work Universal Fastener Company. He was highly skilled and known for his devotion to the company. In 1913, he invented the modern zipper. The patent for the “Separable Fastener” was issued in 1917.

By 1923, B.. Goodrich popularized the word zipper as it applied to use in the boots and pouches it made. The company even copyrighted the name for a time.

NCAA Basketball: Analyzing the Hauser Bros’ fit at top landing spots (bustingbrackets.com; Harkins)

Joey and Sam Hauser are two of the hottest names in the NCAA basketball transfer portal. How might they fit at the four presumed favorites?

In addition to recruiting top high school talents, several programs around the nation have turned to the transfer market to build up their talent pool in recent years. While some may refer to the massive spike in transfer numbers as an “epidemic,” it is also a great way for programs to improve quickly and for players to receive fresh starts. For two of the top sit-out transfers in the nation this offseason, there is no clear reason for their departure.

Supervisor: DeWitt is working hard to reimagine ShoppingTown (Commentary) (PS; Michalenko (commentary))

Town residents, neighbors, people I run into on the street ask me, “What happened to ShoppingTown?”

Most are aware that as Destiny USA has expanded, suburban shopping centers have declined. Yet this phenomenon is not unique; indoor malls all across the country have suffered as online shopping has gathered greater market share and big-box and brick-and-mortar sales have declined. In response, retailers have been steadily relocating to strip malls, where rents are significantly lower for a variety of reasons I outline below.

As reported in the media last October, the Onondaga County Legislature voted to allow the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency (OCIDA) to take over the mall property if the owners: 1. Failed to pay 25% of the $7.74 million total in back taxes owed (now more than $9 million) and 2. Agreed to enter into a 24-month payment plan for the balance.

Subsequently, ShoppingTown’s owners failed to pay the $1.94 million required to maintain ownership and they are presently in litigation with Onondaga County.
