A look at Syracuse basketball’s recruiting targets for the Class of 2020 (PS; Waters)

The spring recruiting period tipped off this past weekend with the start of the NCAA’s open evaluation period.

Syracuse wrapped up its work with the current crop of high school seniors with the commitment of 6-11 center Jesse Edwards of IMG Academy in early April.

Edwards became the fifth player in the 2019 class to commit to the Orange.

That means the Syracuse coaches can turn their full attention on the 2020 class.

Syracuse has already done a lot of work on 2020 recruits with some scholarship offers to recruits having been extended as far back as last summer. There already appears to be a big difference in the Syracuse coaches’ approach to this recruiting class.

With 13 players currently on scholarship, the Syracuse coaches seem to be very focused in their pursuit of players in the ’20 class.

Here is a rundown of 2020 recruits who have received a scholarship offer from Syracuse and continued to be targeted by the Orange:

Did Oshae's Brother Hint at Brissett's Return to Syracuse? (247sports.com; McAllister)

At the end of March, Syracuse sophomore forward Oshae Brissett declared for the NBA Draft. The move was somewhat of a surprise, given that his production declined without gaining much efficiency. In fact, his three point shooting percentage dropped dramatically from 33% to 27%. The likelihood of Brissett being drafted seemed minimal at best. Still, he wanted to test the waters and see what feedback he received from NBA scouts. That is valuable information.

However, there have been some rumblings that his declaration was more than just an opportunity for that valuable feedback. That there is a real chance he sticks and becomes a professional regardless of his draft stock. For the past month or so, things have been relatively quiet on the Brissett front. That is until Tuesday.

Brissett's older brother Dejon Brissett is a wide receiver who had played at Richmond. He decided to become a graduate transfer, and landed at Virginia. In his interview with Wahoos247, Dejon said something very interesting.

"When my brother comes to UVA, I will be at the game in full Syracuse gear, not hiding it at all," Dejon Brissett said. "Family over everything [laughs]."

That is certainly an understandable situation. You cheer for your family over your school when you are not part of that particular team at your school. What makes that quote interesting is its implications. Syracuse basketball plays Virginia twice next season. First, the two open the season in the Carrier Dome. Second, a rematch at Virginia will occur at a date and time to be determined.

Dejon says "when my brother comes to UVA." That is a when, not if statement. The only way that happens is if Oshae returns to Syracuse and is on the squad that plays the Cavs John Paul Jones Arena. That seems to be hinting that Oshae will indeed return to Syracuse, or at least that his brother is anticipating that.

‎ESPN Syracuse: 30 Minutes in Orange Nation 5-1 on Apple Podcasts (apple.com; radio; Seth & Steve)

Steve and Seth discuss the stigma surrounding Syracuse basketball players going in to the draft that they'll have an issue playing man to man defense in the NBA since they play zone in college including a comment from Assistant Coach Adrian Autry on his last radio show. Later, Tommy joins for 'Overreaction or Not An Overreaction' and the guys discuss the news regarding Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller.

Duke Basketball: Top-Ten Blue Devil games of the 2018-19 season (balldurham.com; Connelly)

Duke and Syracuse always has a different feel to it, but you knew this game would be really different days in advance.

Days before this game, Jim Boehiem was in a car accident where he accidentally struck and kill a male on the side of the road.

ESPN then pulled College GameDay from Syracuse and hosted the hour long show from its studio in Connecticut.

There were a lot of emotions pregame with an embrace from Mike Krzyzewski and Boehiem, but then it was down to business once the ball was tipped, and then things got really weird.

It was the first game Duke played without Zion Williamson after he suffered a knee sprain in the game prior against North Carolina.

Alex O’Connell replaced Williamson in the starting lineup and another change was made as Javin DeLaurier replaced Marques Bolden.

The first two players off the bench were Joey Baker and Antonio Vrankovic.

A player who everyone thought was going to red-shirt this season in Baker, and a seldom used senior, Vrankovic, seeing action in place of Bolden and captain Jack White.

How early-entry college basketball candidates fared in the 2018 NBA Draft (PS; Ditota)

Last season, 236 underclassmen declared for the NBA Draft. Of those underclassmen, 181 were college players.

Some of them quickly ended their college careers by signing with agents and definitively turning pro. Others lingered through the process, some earning invitations to the NBA draft combine (Tyus Battle), some finding individual teams interested enough to work them out.

By the deadline to return to school, 77 underclass college players stayed in the draft; 40 were selected by NBA franchises. Of the 30 players selected in the first round, 14 were college freshmen. Eight freshmen were among the top 10 picks.

A glimpse of last year's underclassmen and their fates (May projections from ESPN's Jonathan Givony):

Deandre Ayton

Deandre Ayton
Draft projection May 2018: 1

Draft selection June 2018: 1 (Suns)
College: Arizona (freshman)
1st year salary: $8.17 million
Rookie stats: 16.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg, 30.7 mpg, 58.5% FG

Ayton's rookie year solidified the Suns' decision to make him the first pick of last year's draft. He averaged a double-double on an abysmal team; Phoenix fired its head coach after one season. Ayton, though, was a bright spot in an otherwise forgettable year.

Old-school Italian at Vescio’s in Rome, NY (Dining Out Review) (PS; Marmaduke Woodman)

Vescio’s isn’t a candles and red tablecloth kind of place. In fact, its linoleum tile floors and well-worn furnishings fit the diner feel of the place. So does the service, which is casual but friendly and accommodating.

But if you’re really hungry for good handmade food—and lots of it—Vescio’s could be your best choice. Our recent Wednesday visit was nostalgically delicious.

The menu has every dish you’ve seen on traditional red-sauce menus and then some. Starters range from roasted peppers or a simple antipasto for $7.99 to a large dish of “Greens Vescio” for $10.99. Sandwiches and burgers start at $7.99, and the most expensive choice on the regular menu is veal saltimbocca at $19.99. Mains come with housemade soup or a side salad.
