Welcome to Great Lakes Awareness Day!

Great Lakes Awareness Day celebrates the Great Lakes and highlights the issues they face, and how the lakes can be preserved. Events for the day have involved organizations such as schools, aquariums, and museums. There is not much information available online about how the day is celebrated or how it came to be.
There are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie. Together they make up the largest body of freshwater on Earth and stretch 750 miles from east to west. They are located on the border of the United States and Canada and touch the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. It is believed that at one time the Great Lakes were covered by a glacier—it receded towards Canada and left depressions filled with water.

Will Carrier Dome traffic get worse with new I-81? Think sieve not funnel, state says (PS; Weaver)

Getting to and from Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome will get better after a portion of Interstate 81 comes down, state officials say.

That’s because tearing down 1.2 miles of elevated highway will open up many more dome routes for drivers, according to the state transportation official who’s heading the I-81 project.

Right now, officials say, I-81 acts like a funnel forcing thousands of drivers onto the same crowded path aimed at one main exit.

Without the highway, it’ll be more like a sieve. Dome-bound drivers will be able to choose many different routes, officials say. Traffic will disperse across city streets as vehicles head up the hill.

“What we’re creating for the University Hill area is we’re creating multiple avenues to be able to get to the hill,” said Mark Frechette, the I-81 project director. “Other avenues will disperse the traffic through the hill and make that better.”

Syracuse Basketball: Brandon Triche has been reborn in Italy (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse basketball star Brandon Triche has been reborn in Italy. Here’s how that happened and why it is only the beginning.

It has been a long time since Syracuse basketball fans have seen Brandon Triche in Orange. Brandon played at Syracuse from 2009-2013.

Triche started every game of his four-year career.

Brandon made his impact felt becoming the only Syracuse player to win at least 120 games as a starter.

After a wildly successful collegiate career, he went undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft. Although his journey overseas had just begun. Over the next six years, he would end up playing for seven different foreign organizations.

It wasn’t smooth, he dealt with a myriad of injuries and was traded several times. Brandon struggled to try to find the rhythm that made him a legend on the hill at Syracuse. But good things always come to those who wait.

Back in August of 2018, Triche signed a one-year deal with Orlandina Basket, an Italian team of the Serie A2 Basket league. That’s where everything changed.

As of late, his squad has won 13 games in a row dating all the way back to the beginning of February. Donna Ditota of Syracuse.com detailed how well Triche played in his latest playoff-clinching win:

Syracuse Basketball: Joe Girard III will give Orange a new dynamic in 2019-20 (bustingbrackets.com; Richards)

After a disappointing ending to a solid year, Syracuse Basketball will now look towards life without Tyus Battle. New recruit Joe Girard will be integral to this.

Losing to Baylor in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament didn’t feel like the ending that the Syracuse Basketball season deserved. A stellar regular season campaign from Jim Boeheim’s team showed that the Orange are a legitimate threat in the ACC. They have plenty of pieces to do the same next season. With Tyus Battle declaring for the draft, Frank Howard and Pascal Chukwu (Seniors) leaving and Oshae Brissett undecided on his future, we will be entering a whole new era of Orange basketball in the 2019-20 season. 2019 New York State Mr. Basketball, Joe Girard III headlines Syracuse’s recruiting class for the upcoming year.

The shooting guard, from Glens Falls High School is a four star recruit. And, as his already impressive resume suggests, has huge potential. The Orange signee had various other offers from different schools, and plenty of interest, including that from the likes of rival ACC giants, Duke. However, Girard made the decision to sign with ‘Cuse way back in October. The young guard averaged 49 PPG during this his final year in high school – on his way to becoming the highest scoring high school basketball player in NY State history, finishing his high school career with an astounding tally of over 4,000 points.

Wofford Transfer Keve Aluma Announces His Commitment (thespun.com; Machlin)

Forward Keve Aluma got to experience his first trip to the NCAA Tournament during a breakout sophomore season at Wofford. But despite starting all but one game for the Terriers, he has decided to continue playing elsewhere.

On Sunday, Aluma announced on Twitter that he would be transferring to Virginia Tech. He credited the school’s academic opportunities and the coaching staff as big factors in the decision.

After talking with my family and considering all the options, I have decided to attend Virginia Tech. At VT I have found the best academic opportunities and an outstanding coaching staff.

Aluma finished his sophomore season at Wofford averaging 6.9 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game, and a team-best 66.7-percent field goal rate. He started 34 of 35 games for the Terriers as they went 26-4 in the regular season en route to winning the SoCon Tournament.

The 6-foot-9 forward joins a Hokies team that just hired his former head coach, Mike Young, to replace outgoing head coach Buzz Williams.

Pizza, local beers on tap at new Madison County spot along Oneida Lake (PS; Pucci)

Lucky Dogs Pizzeria & Taproom was packed for hours on its first Friday night in business. People waited in their cars for a table to open. A neighbor had to help direct traffic.

Not bad for a restaurant and bar that can’t serve alcohol yet.

Dustin Kringer, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Beth, said the temporary liquor license is on its way and with it will come the opportunity to show off the two new wood-topped bars Kringer built, where 14 beers will be on tap, including many brews made in Central New York, as well as New York wines.

The restaurant opened on April 24 at 2370 State Route 31 in the town of Sullivan, in what was most recently Roadside 31. Lucky Dogs has a similar menu concept—pizza, burgers, hot subs, entree salads—but Kringer said his kitchen’s commitment to scratch-made food made with high-quality ingredients will set the restaurant apart.

Among the most popular menu items so far are the mozzarella-stuffed meatballs—available on their own as a starter, as part of a sub sandwich and sliced as a pizza topping—and the salt potato pizza, a white sauce pizza topped with buttered salt potatoes, bacon, cheddar cheese and sour cream.
