Welcome to National Coconut Cream Pie Day!

The coconut is not a nut. In fact, it isn’t a fruit either. It is a seed!

Coconut oils accelerate the metabolism. Of course, if you put them in pie you may not notice the effect.

The sailors aboard Vasco de Gama’s ships gave the coconut its name. They called it “Coco”, named after a grimacing face or hobgoblin.

The water from the coconut has traditionally been used when commercial IV solutions of plasma have not been available.

Coconut oils also contain four growth hormones, called cytokinins, and three sets of chromosomes – or triploids – that help the development of many organisms.

How important is NBA draft combine invitation to future NBA career? We checked (PS; Ditota)

Oshae Brissett and Tyus Battle have been invited to attend the newly configured G League Elite Camp, which begins Sunday and stretches through next Tuesday.

Afterward, at the same location in Chicago (Quest Multiplex), the NBA draft combine will begin. A select number of players from the G League camp will be invited to continue their stay at the NBA combine.

NBA combine traditionally has been a launching pad for NBA talent and a fairly good predictor of which players will be drafted that year. Over the past five seasons, an average of 43 of the NBA’s 60 draft picks were filled by players who participated in the NBA combine. Last year was a particularly good year for combine invitees: 48 of them heard their names on draft night.

Over the last five years, NBA teams have drafted a total of 12 college players who did not secure combine invitations. That’s fewer than three per year. The highest of those picks was Josh Huestis, whom the Thunder selected with the 29th pick of the 2014 NBA Draft. Huestis subsequently spent most of his career in the G League.

Syracuse Basketball: NBA Combine still possible for SU players (itlh; Esden Jr)

Oshae Brissett still hasn’t decided if he’s returning to Syracuse basketball. But in the meantime, he’s been added to the G-League Elite Camp roster.

Will he or won’t he return to Syracuse basketball is the question? Of course, we’re talking about sophomore Oshae Brissett who has already played two seasons on the hill for the Orange. But will he play a third season? That is still unclear.

What is clear is that Oshae Brissett has been added to the G-League Elite Camp roster. This is the inaugural year for the camp that will include players beyond the G-League (collegiate athletes).

In other words, this is a poor man’s NBA Combine. Both of these “combines” take place in Chicago and all 30 NBA teams will be represented at each function with key decision makers.

The G-League camp is scheduled for May 12th through the 14th. 40 draft-eligible players will participate including Tyus Battle and the aforementioned Brissett. While the NBA Combine takes place from May 15th through the 19th.

The ACC Gets Busy With Transfers (DBR; King)

There have been several ACC transfers in the last few days so let’s catch up a bit:

UNC got Christian Keeling from Charleston Southern as a grad transfer. Wofford’s Keve Aluma, 6-9, will rejoin Mike Young at Virginia Tech. Grad transfer Curran Scott comes to Clemson from Tulsa.

Meanwhile, Georgia Tech loses Curtis Haywood to the Golden Hurricane while welcoming Bubba Parham from VMI.

ACC Daily Digest: May 7, Pitt plans offseason trip to Italy, 8 ACC players receive G League Elite Camp Invites - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Miami also going to Italy...

It’s mostly hoops in today’s ACC Daily Digest. Let’s get right to it.

Ciao, Pitt!

First report by Jeff Goodman: Pittsburgh Basketball will trek to Italy this offseason in preparation of the 2019-20 season. Pitt will spend nine days — Aug. 5-14 — in Italy; according to NCAA rules, teams are allowed to take this abroad trips once every four seasons.

The Panthers can hold up to 10 practices, per NCAA rules, and play in a series of exhibition games.

This summer, @jeffcapel and @Pitt_MBB will be practicing and playing games in Italy. Pitt Hoops to Take Italian Tour This Summer

Jeff Capel is no dummy, either. This is a great idea for his team. Obviously, who doesn’t want to see Italy and eat some awesome food? And more specifically to basketball, Pittsburgh is a talented team, but one that lacks notable experience. With Xavier Johnson and Trey McGowens leading the way, this could be a springboard trip to a program leap in 2020.

The extra time and experience are invaluable.

Four other ACC programs will also make offseason trips in the summer of 2019: Georgia Tech (Spain), Clemson (Italy), Miami (Italy) and Syracuse.

Syracuse also likely taking a foreign trip this year. Don’t have the specifics yet.

Three more ACC programs who will go on foreign trips, per sources:

Georgia Tech - Aug. 9-16 (Spain)
Miami - Aug. 9-18 (Italy)
Pittsburgh - Aug. 5-14 (Italy)

G League Elite Camp: 8 ACC Players receive invites

The G League Elite Camp is set to take place later this week: May 12-14. For this NBA-sanctioned event, 40 draft-eligible players — ones not invited to the combine — will compete. Of that group, which is determined by a vote among teams, eight hail from the ACC, including several underclassmen.

The top performers of the G League Elite Camp can earn invitations to the combine, which is notable.

Javin DeLaurier, Duke
Terance Mann, FSU
Dewan Hernandez, Miami
Luke Maye, UNC
Tyus Battle, Syracuse
Oshae Brissett, Syracuse
Mamadi Diakite, UVA
Justin Robinson, Virginia Tech

Here are 5 things to know about SU’s commencement speaker (DO; Folts)

Mary Daly, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, is Syracuse University’s 2019 commencement speaker. Here are five things you should know about Daly before she gives her speech on May 12:

She’s an SU graduate

Daly received her doctorate in economics from Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1994.

“Syracuse gave me a real sense of intellectual community,” Daly said in an interview with The Daily Orange. “One of the reasons I chose the Fed at San Francisco was because it had that same sense of intellectual community.”

Prior to studying at SU, Daly earned her master’s at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her bachelor’s at University of Missouri, Kansas City. She dropped out of high school at age 15, but later earned her GED diploma before going to college.

Daly will be awarded with an honorary degree from SU when she visits campus.

She’s worked at the Fed for more than two decades

Daly was appointed president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in October 2018, following more than 20 years of work at the Reserve.

She joined the Fed in 1996 as an economist and went on to hold several leadership positions before becoming the bank’s executive vice president and director of economic research. In that position, she oversaw research and offered economic analysis to help develop monetary policy.
