Welcome to World Crohn's and Colitis Day!

The first annual World Crohn's and Colitis Day (WCCD) was celebrated on May 23, 2007. The event was created by Josh Golder and recognized by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, as well as by people from around the world. Josh is a prominent figure and activist in the Crohn's and Colitis community (who himself has Crohn's disease), who directed and produced the internationally known, community-wide movie, "True Guts: Struggle and Triumph over Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis" (which is more commonly known as "True Guts"). Josh created WCCD as a way to bring people affected by either disease together, as well as friends and family members of those individuals, and even those who knew nothing about either disease in order to increase awareness of them.

Crohn’s Disease

Named after Dr. Burrill B. Crohn, who first described the disease in 1932 along with colleagues Dr. Leon Ginzburg and Dr. Gordon D. Oppenheimer, Crohn’s disease belongs to a group of conditions known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract.

Crohn’s most commonly affects the end of the small bowel (the ileum) and the beginning of the colon, but it may affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis is limited to the colon, also called the large intestine.

Crohn’s disease can also affect the entire thickness of the bowel wall, while ulcerative colitis only involves the innermost lining of the colon. Finally, in Crohn’s disease, the inflammation of the intestine can “skip”-- leaving normal areas in between patches of diseased intestine. In ulcerative colitis this does not occur.

NBA scouts discuss Syracuse forward Oshae Brissett’s draft status (PS; Waters)

Oshae Brissett, who announced on Tuesday night that he would remain in the NBA draft rather than return to Syracuse for his junior year, is not currently listed on many mock drafts.

But where does he stand in the eyes of NBA scouts?

Brissett provided NBA scouts with plenty of data over his two years at Syracuse where he started every game in his career.

Brissett, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 12.4 points and 7.5 rebounds this past season for Syracuse. He led the Orange in rebounding for the second straight year with 7.5 per game. However, he suffered a mysterious drop in shooting percentages, particularly on 3-point shot where his marksmanship dipped from 33 percent as a freshman to 27 percent this past season.

“He didn’t have the type of season that created a lot of buzz among (NBA) teams,’’ said a scout for a team in the NBA’s Western Conference.

So what prompted Brissett’s decision to stay in the NBA draft?

According to reports, Brissett did play well at the G-League Elite camp in Chicago last week. He was one of 10 players at the G-League event who received invitations to remain in the Chicago for the NBA Combine.

Syracuse Basketball: 2 reasons why Oshae Brissett won’t be an NBA bust (itlh; Mlodzinski)

With Oshae Brissett officially keeping his name in the 2019 NBA Draft, there’s been a lot of talk on if he’ll be another Cuse bust. One word: balderdash.

I’ll admit it right now. I was initially surprised, upset, and downright mad when the news about Oshae Brissett officially leaving the Syracuse basketball program to pursue a career in the NBA came out.

After his freshman year, it was inevitable that he would not be a four-year player. However, after Tyus Battle returned for his junior year to hone some skills in anticipation for his NBA career, I figured Brissett would follow suit. After all, he had played second fiddle to Battle the past two seasons, so one year as the main guy seemed like a very good idea.

Well, clearly Oshae had some other ideas.

After performing extremely well at the G-League Elite Camp, Brissett was a handful of players invited to the NBA Combine – where he shined even more.

For reference, he took home the prize for the lowest body fat percentage of anyone at the combine (2.9% to be exact), and also performed extremely well in the vertical jump and scrimmages.

Most importantly, his three-point range really caught the eyes of scouts, which most likely had a huge impact on his stock rising, and ultimately his decision to keep his name in the NBA Draft.

However, there are still some Syracuse fans who disagree with Brissett and are already writing him down as a potential bust – something that has become a common theme over the past decade.

Syracuse Basketball Players Taken in the First Round of the NBA Draft Since 2008 (According to sports-reference.com):

Donte Greene (2008)
Jonny Flynn (2009)
Wes Johnson (2010)
Dion Waiters (2012)
Fab Melo (2012)
Michael Carter-Williams (2013)
Jerami Grant (2014)
Tyler Ennis (2014)
Chris McCullough (2015)
Malachi Richardson (2016)
Tyler Lydon (2017)
Of the 11 players listed, only six were on an NBA roster as of this season, and only Waiters and Grant average above 10 points per game.

Syracuse Basketball: Oshae Brissett passes torch to Quincy Guerrier (itlh; Esden Jr)

With Oshae Brissett walking out the door he is handing the torch off to fellow Canadian Quincy Guerrier. Here’s why Syracuse basketball is in great hands.

I guess Oshae Brissett didn’t need until May 29th to make his decision. Late on Tuesday evening, he revealed on social media that he was keeping his name in the NBA Draft and is taking the next step.

Which leaves the Syracuse basketball program is in a very precarious position.

The Orange will now have to replace 80 percent of their starting lineup from the 2018 season:

Frank Howard
Graduated.
Tyus Battle
Battle revealed in a lengthy farewell letter that he would forgo his senior season to chase professional opportunities a few months ago.
Oshae Brissett
Brissett spent two years with the Orange and decided that was enough. The 2019 NBA Draft is June 20th.
Paschal Chukwu
Graduated.

Which leaves four open spots to be claimed heading into 2019 with the only spot held down being one of the forward positions with Elijah Hughes returning.

When players leave the program it’s sad, but also at the same time, it creates openings and opportunities for new Orange players to create their own legacies. One of those players expected to come in and earn immediate playing time is Quincy Guerrier.

Syracuse Basketball: SU eyeing encounter with Niagara University (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball team reportedly is working on a battle with Niagara, a duel that possesses all kinds of interesting storylines.

The majority of Syracuse basketball’s non-conference slate during the 2019-20 campaign is set, and one more game that may get added to the calendar appears in the making.

Per a tweet from Steve Infanti, the sports director at NewsChannel 9, the ‘Cuse is trying to finalize a match-up with Niagara that would take place on Dec. 28 inside the Carrier Dome.

The Purple Eagles are led by a new head coach, Patrick Beilein, who has tons of familiarity with Central and Western New York. Beilein, hired as the boss at Niagara in late March, spent the last four seasons at Le Moyne, a Division II program located in Syracuse. Beilein took the Dolphins to three-consecutive NCAA Tournaments, the first time that had occurred at Le Moyne since the mid-1960s.

Beilein is the son of esteemed coach John Beilein, who shocked the collegiate and pro-basketball communities when he decided to recently leave Michigan for the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers. While with the Wolverines, Beilein guided Michigan past the Orange in the 2013 Final Four. Yuck.

Patrick Beilein, meanwhile, has named Syracuse native Greg Paulus as one of his assistant coaches. Paulus, a former Gatorade High School Male Athlete of the Year at Christian Brothers Academy, suited up for Duke in hoops and also competed at SU for one term at quarterback as a graduate-student transfer. Prior to coming on board at Niagara, Paulus held coaching stints at George Washington, Louisville, Ohio State, and Navy.

Should a contest with the Purple Eagles transpire, I’m counting just one affair remaining for the ‘Cuse in its out-of-conference schedule. Cornell is once again a part of the line-up. Others include Bucknell, Colgate, Georgetown, and multiple opponents in the 2019 NIT Season Tip-Off.

Is Wynston Tabbs the most important player on Boston College's roster? - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

About three weeks after Boston College’s 2018-19 season concluded, junior guard Ky Bowman declared for the 2019 NBA Draft. The decision was the opposite of a surprise; Bowman of course tried his hand at testing the NBA waters a year prior, too. After electing to return for his junior season, Bowman put up huge usage numbers — 26.4 percent usage rate, 16 FGA and 5.1 FTA per 40 minutes. While his efficiency lacked (48.6 eFG%), as opponents loaded up their coverages against Bowman, the 6-foot-1 guard came to the combine this year better prepared.

The departure of Bowman, though, brings about a bit of a culture change for Boston College Basketball. Yes, head coach Jim Christian will return for his sixth season at the program; however, for the last four years BC has been led by a pair of North Carolina guards: Bowman and Jerome Robinson. That time period, which included a 19-win season and a top-50 offense in 2017-18, is now over, though.

Change is on the horizon for the Eagles, and for that to go as smoothly as possible, big things will be expected of sophomore guard Wynston Tabbs.

Freshman Season Recap

Early on in his freshman season, Wynston Tabbs was a quick hit for Boston College. The 6-foot-3 guard started right out the jump, and averaged 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. While Tabbs struggled at times with his shot (49.4 eFG%), he was lights out from the free throw line (82.5 FT%), which led to a solid true shooting rate of 54.7 percent.

Duke, Kansas Stars Among Favorites For CBB’s Top Award (thespun.com; Machlin)

It may be pretty hard for any player to top what Zion Williamson did in college basketball last year, but the 2019-20 season is still guaranteed to have some star players provide us with memorable moments. Some of the returning stars for several of the sport’s top programs are poised to win one of college basketball’s top awards.

The Naismith Trophy is annually awarded to the top player in college basketball. While the pre-season watch list has not been revealed yet, six players have been identified via 247Sports who should be early contenders for the award.

The list consists of Duke’s Tre Jones, Kansas’ Udoka Azubuike, Marquette’s Markus Howard, Michigan State’s Cassius Winston, UNC’s Cole Anthony, and Memphis’ James Wiseman.
Jones started all 36 games for Duke as a freshman, averaging 9.4 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and 5.3 assists per game.

Azubuike’s season was shortened by injuries but he has still averaged over 13.0 points per game over the past two seasons.

2 Hollywood movies take over downtown Syracuse bars for filming (PS; Herbert)

Two Hollywood productions have taken over several bars in downtown Syracuse today for filming scenes.
“The Night House” is using Maxwell’s tavern in Hanover Square Wednesday for scenes. Production workers wouldn’t confirm which cast members will appear in the scenes, but fans may get a glimpse as they expect to also use the Hanover Square area with the fountain during the shoot.
Maxwell’s co-owner Peter Ancona said the bar would be closed temporarily for the production.

At the same time, “Paper Spiders” is shooting a stone’s throw away on Clinton Street in Armory Square. Al’s Wine & Whiskey Lounge and the Syracuse Suds Factory were temporarily closed midday Wednesday, with black drapes covering up the windows so passersby can’t look inside.
Production manager Ted Grader said “Paper Spiders” was excited to use locally hired crew for the indie movie.
At both shoots, crew members could be seen attending to trucks and film equipment outside the venues.

“The Night House,” produced by David S. Goyer (“The Dark Knight") and directed by David Bruckner (“V/H/S,” “The Ritual”), is a horror-thriller about a widow who begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s disturbing secrets. A cast has not been officially announced, but Deadline and Variety reported in February that Golden Globe nominee Rebecca Hall (“The Town,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) would star.
Production on “The Night House” is expected to continue through June.

“Paper Spiders” is described as a bittersweet coming-of-age story focused on a high school student’s senior year being turned upside down when her mother begins to suffer from a mental illness. The cast includes Emmy-nominated actress Lili Taylor (“Say Anything,” “Mystic Pizza,” “American Crime”) stars in the film opposite Stefania LaVie Owen (“The Carrie Diaries”), Tom Papa (“The Marriage Ref”), Ian Nelson (“The Hunger Games”), and David Rasche (“Sledge Hammer,” “Men in Black 3″); Inon Shampanier is directing on a script he co-wrote the script with Natalie Shampanier.

“Paper Spiders” shot scenes in Baldwinsville last month at The B’ville Diner, the Red Mill Inn, and a Thrifty Shopper store. Production is expected to wrap Friday, Grader said.
