Welcome to National Respect Canada Day!

Apparently today's National Respect Canada Day.
But if you forgot, we don't blame you. Why?
1.) You've probably apologized a dozen times for it (it's the Canadian thing to do).
2.) It's a lame holiday. Everyone knows National Respect Canada Day is every day for true Canucks.

3.) It's also National Tapioca Pudding Day and those pudding cups certainly aren't going to eat themselves.

Basketball season is still a few months away, but that didn't stop the Louisville men's basketball freshmen from rattling off a highlight-reel play at coach Chris Mack's pool this weekend.

Mack posted a 10-second video to his Twitter on Sunday. The clip shows the Cards' six freshmen combining to pull off a trick shot into a poolside basketball hoop, involving a trampoline, a slide and five total passes.

"The freshmen need to work on their passing so we got in a little practice," Mack wrote in the tweet. "However I'm not counting it as part of our 4 court hours this week!"

The sequence starts with David Johnson bouncing on a trampoline in the background of the video. Johnson throws a quarterback pass over a wood pergola (a word I learned while writing this story) and Jaelyn Withers leaps off the pool deck to catch it with two hands mid-air. Withers dishes to a jumping Samuell Williamson, who flips it behind his back to Quinn Slazinski. Josh Nickelberry times his descent down the pool slide perfectly, just in time to catch the ball and throw an alley oop pass to Aidan Igiehon for a one-handed finish.

Pretty slick, but does it beats that Christen Cunningham no-look dime to Jordan Nwora from last season?

Louisville averaged 13.47 assists per game in the 2018-19 season, ranking seventh in the ACC. If the passing displayed in Mack's video translates from the pool to the court, the Cards should be in good shape to surpass that this year.

It’s a bit of a stretch to call this an ACC recruiting story - only UNC is in on Todd at this point. But Jerry Stackhouse, now the head man at Vandy, is, and more importantly to us, and somewhat surprisingly, so is Johnny Dawkins and UCF.

That would be a huge get for the Knights.

Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart has been selected to lead the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee. It was announced Barnhart would work with Duke athletic director and committee chair Kevin White during the upcoming season before succeeding him for the next season. The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee is in charge of selecting, seeding and bracketing schools each year for the NCAA Tournament.

Syracuse basketball offers 2022 prospect Dior Johnson.

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/07/1...rs-2022-prospects-chance-westry-dior-johnson/ (the juice; Cheng)

Great to see former Syracuse forward Oshae Brissett turn in a great performance in the NBA Summer League! On to today’s recruiting links…

It was a busy weekend for Syracuse basketball, starting with a couple of offers extended to the class of 2022. Dior Johnson, a combo guard from Saugerties, NY tweeted on Saturday afternoon that he had been extended an offer from the Orange. He mentioned that he had met Syracuse coaches Jim Boeheim and Gerry McNamara in seventh grade. He also holds offers from DePaul, Nebraska, Albama and LSU.

On Friday, SU also extended an offer to Trinity (Pa.) High School guard Chance Westry. The offer was first reported by ZagsBlog.com’s Adam Zagoria. Penn State has also extended an offer to the 2022 prospect.

Syracuse associated head coach Adrian Autry was also on the recruiting trail this weekend, and was on hand to watch 2021 four-star forward Benny Williams, reported Mike McAllister from 247 Sports. Williams was playing at Peach Jam, and holds an offers from Syracuse, Georgetown, Seton hall and Stony Brook, among others.

Another prospect Syracuse was interested in at Peach Jam was 2021 guard Kennedy Chandler, according to Stockrisers.com’s Jacke Weingarten. The four-star guard is ranked 28th in his class by 247 Sports, and he already holds offers from Ole Miss, Alabama, Florida State, Illinois and Seton Hall.

The out-of-conference schedule for Syracuse basketball is complete, so let’s take a look at how these contests could affect the Orange’s Big Dance chances.
In recent years, a knock on the Syracuse basketball squad is that, during the non-conference part of the hoops calendar, the ‘Cuse doesn’t leave the state of New York much, and SU battles against a bunch of cupcakes.
I disagree with that sort of assessment, as a crucial factor that has resulted in the Orange receiving several March Madness invites is due to Syracuse actually experiencing one of the strongest out-of-conference ballots campaign after campaign.

Sure, the ‘Cuse plays a lot of home tilts prior to Atlantic Coast Conference competition commencing, but the same applies to many of the country’s premier programs.
Whether SU’s upcoming non-conference roster will ultimately prove stingy, or soft, remains unclear, however, my initial inclination is that this particular cadre of clashes is a tad on the weaker side. Naturally, I hope that I’m wrong in this prognostication.

Will the out-of-conference help or hurt the Orange’s bid to return to the NCAA Tournament?

Tough to tell, at this juncture, as we really have no clue how these foes will fare in 2019-20. If Syracuse prevails in the bulk of its non-conference affairs, then also performs well in the ACC, reaching the Big Dance is inevitable. Now, if the ‘Cuse picks up multiple setbacks in the out-of-conference, that could spell trouble, especially if those non-conference opponents are not quite as formidable.

Conversely, since the ACC has gone from 18 to 20 league match-ups, reducing the out-of-conference events from 13 to 11, this provides our beloved boys with two extra occasions to secure quality successes – and one of those instances will come on the road.

https://insidetheloudhouse.com/2019/07/14/syracuse-basketball-gamble-pays-off-tyler-lydon-kings-deal/ (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse basketball star Tyler Lydon has signed a deal with the Sacramento Kings. Here’s why his gamble paid off this offseason.

Sometimes you have to risk it to get the biscuit. Former Syracuse basketball star Tyler Lydon and his representation took a unique path back to the NBA this offseason.

After playing two seasons for the Syracuse basketball squad, Lydon decided he was ready for the NBA and entered the 2017 NBA Draft.

Tyler was selected in the first round by the Utah Jazz and was later traded to the Denver Nuggets.

The Denver fit never really made sense for Lydon because he was immediately buried on the depth chart behind a slew of other forwards.

The playing time he ended up receiving backed up that initial thought process: only 26 career games with the Nuggets and he averaged less than four minutes per contest in those games.

Although when he got opportunities he showed that he belongs in the NBA G-League per Basketball-Reference:

  • 2017-18: 12.7 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game, and shot 38 percent from deep.
  • 2018-19: 13.3 points per game, 9.1 boards per game, and averaged over 33 minutes per game.
After two seasons, the Nuggets decided to decline the team option on Lydon making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Tyler Cavanuagh used his final NBA Summer League game to state his case for another NBA opportunity.

The former Jamesville-DeWitt high school star polished off a productive Summer League stint with his most proficient performance yet.

Cavanaugh scored 19 points in just 20 minutes on Saturday, helping the New York Knicks to a 103-87 win over Washington. Cavanaugh, a 6-foot-9 forward, made 6 of 9 shots from the floor and also made 6 of 8 free throws. He chipped in four rebounds, two assists and did not commit a turnover.

Only No. 3 overall pick R.J. Barrett was more productive for the Knicks in the game. The Duke product impressed with 21 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Over the course of five Summer League games, the 25-year-old Cavanaugh averaged 10 points in 15 minutes. He shot 52 percent and also hauled in 3.6 rebounds per outing.

Whether that will be enough to earn him another NBA opportunity is the next question.

Cavanaugh, who played at Wake Forest and then George Washington, has played in the NBA in each of the last two years on two-way contracts. His first two-way deal in Atlanta was turned into a traditional contract mid-way through the season. He played last year with Utah.

The Knicks were also helped by former Syracuse sharpshooter Andrew White III, who scored seven points in 15 minutes. White made 3 of 7 shots.

Former Syracuse star Tyus Battle, who is attempting to earn his first NBA opportunity, had his best scoring outing yet. Battle scored six points in 17 minutes. He made 2 of 5 shots, while also contributing three rebounds and two assists. He did not commit a turnover and made 2 of 3 free throws.

https://www.syracuse.com/news/2019/07/139-pound-sturgeon-caught-in-oneida-lake.html (PS; Lohmann)

Researchers snagged a 139-pound sturgeon in Oneida Lake earlier this summer, which the state’s environment department is hailing as a success in a 24-year effort to help the species recover in New York state.

The sturgeon is the biggest caught in the lake since stocking began in 1995, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

“This catch is great news for New York’s lake sturgeon recovery program,” said Commissioner Bagil Seggos in a statement.

Cornell researchers on June 19 found the 72.5-inch fish, estimated to be 20 years old. They sedated it, measured and weighed it, tagged it and returned it to the lake to get even bigger off a diet of worms, snails and zebra mussels.

In 1995, the state began stocking sturgeon across New York lakes to restore the species after overfishing and damming made it endangered, according to a news release. Since then, about 11,000 sturgeon have been stocked into Oneida Lake.

The fish can reach lengths of seven feet and weigh more than 200 lbs.

Anglers who encounter this specimen or any other sturgeon are not allowed to keep them, the DEC said. If a sturgeon has a tag, fishers should note the number on it and contact the DEC, whose researchers will be interested.

Gotta ask:. Where do sturgeon find worms in the lake?
