Welcome to National Caviar Day!

On July 18, National Caviar Day recognizes a seafood delicacy with roe on toast. The day also raises awareness about the survival of the sturgeon.
In simple terms, caviar is Sturgeon fish eggs. There are several species of Sturgeon fish. As a result, the caviar produced varies in colors depending on the species. Caviar is full of protein and vitamins making the delicacy a healthy meal.
The United States led distribution at 600 tons per year until around 1900. However, due to the over-harvesting of Sturgeon fish for the caviar, the U.S. banned harvesting for a time to protect the sturgeon fish from becoming extinct. The population has never recovered sufficiently since the ban, resulting in caviar’s continued status as a luxury item. Since then, harvesting, import, and export are restricted.

The 55 people in TBT you'll want to watch most: Devo, Doug Gottlieb and a No. 4 Draft pick (PS; Carlson)

The Basketball Tournament, the annual summer event that includes Boeheim's Army, begins on Friday with four eight-team regionals scheduled to be completed over the course of this weekend.

Four more regionals are scheduled for next weekend, including the Syracuse Region at Onondaga Community College's SRC Arena.

The following list is a look at the 55 people scheduled to compete in TBT that you'll want to be the most attention to.

It's a combination of former NBA players, former college stars, people that you probably can't stand and high-level international competitors that you might not recognize but have traditionally been the strongest players in the event.

Since the cash prize was bumped up to $1 million (it's now $2 million) seven of the eight finalists have been formed from teams of high-level international players. Only one alumni team has made the title game in the past four years, Team Colorado in 2016.

Still, alumni teams like Boeheim's Army have reason for hope. At least one alumni team has made a deep run every single year, with at least one reaching the semifinals each time the event has been played.

This list should give you an idea of the event's favorites, underdogs and who to root against if you want to see bracket chaos.

The broadcast schedule in located on TheTournament.com.

Former Auburn assistant basketball coach avoids prison ? (localsyr.com; AP)

Former Auburn University assistant basketball coach Chuck Person has avoided prison in a bribery scandal that has touched some of the biggest schools in college basketball.

Person was sentenced on Wednesday to 200 hours of community service during the two years the Probation Department will supervise him. Judge Loretta A. Preska said “no purpose would be served by incarceration.”

Sentencing guidelines called for two years in prison, though three other coaches who pleaded guilty to the same charge also received lenient sentences.

Person, who was in financial trouble at the time, accepted $91,500 in bribes to parlay his relationships with top players to steer them to a financial adviser, federal prosecutors said. The adviser, however, was working as a government cooperator.

Syracuse University Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Universities in China (syr.edu)

Chancellor Kent Syverud and members of Syracuse University’s leadership team recently traveled to China as part of the University’s efforts to build strong partnerships with China’s top universities in the areas of faculty and graduate collaboration and research.

Those efforts are also aimed at attracting top students and enhancing Syracuse University’s profile in China as part of the internationalization efforts identified in the Academic Strategic Plan.

“Thanks to the work of the University Internationalization Council, we have an emerging strategy for engaging with peer institutions in China. The agreements signed during this trip are the first steps toward enhancing relationships that benefit faculty, research and graduate education at Syracuse University,” says Chancellor Syverud.

On May 16, Chancellor Syverud led a delegation—including Vice President for Research John Liu and Kyu Lee, associate dean for global initiatives in the Whitman School—on a visit to Xiamen University (XMU) in Xiamen, Fujian Province. There, they met XMU President Rong Zhang and other university officials, and representatives from XMU’s Graduate School of Training and Management, School of Social and Human Sciences, College of Humanities, School of Information Science and Technology, College of Ocean and Earth and College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Chancellor Syverud and President Zhang signed a memorandum of understanding calling for greater levels of collaboration and cooperation between the two universities to strengthen initiatives in joint training and exchanges of students, faculty visits and scientific research cooperation.

At present, XMU and Syracuse University have formed a good foundation of cooperation in different subject areas, including the humanities, economics, ocean science, chemistry and chemical engineering. The memorandum is intended to open up new areas and deepen existing areas of cooperation between the two universities.

On May 19, Chancellor Syverud and Liu visited Hunan Normal University (HNU) in Changsha, Hunan Province, for a similar cooperation agreement signing ceremony with HNU President Hongxin Jiang.
