Welcome to Spider-Man Day!

Spider-Man, who is likely the most popular Marvel character, and who also is one of the most famous comic book characters of all time, made his debut in the August 1962 edition of Amazing Fantasy. The comic book, put out by Marvel Comics, was dated August 1—the day on which we celebrate Spider-Man Day—although it was actually released on June 5. The comic book had previously been titled Amazing Adult Fantasy, but for issue #15—its final issue—its name was changed.

Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The idea came from Lee, and Ditko played a large part in the creation and drawing of the character. Artist Jack Kirby also had a hand in early drawings of the character. When coming up with the concept of Spider-Man, Lee wanted to make sure his character would be relatable to teenagers. He was influenced by the pulp magazine crime fighter, Spider, and may have also been inspired when he saw a spider crawl up a wall.

Buddy Boeheim jokes that the Italian food is why his father, the Hall of Fame Head Coach, wanted to bring his team to Italy.

While it's not a bad perk, the entire team knows what's really on the line when they play four exhibition games from August 12-18 against elite Italian teams.

Consider there's only one returning starter from last year's team (Elijah Hughes) and while Boeheim played plenty in his freshmen season and Jalen Carey showed potential, other returning players like Bourama Sidibe and Robert Braswell played sparingly.
Now, the Orange brings aboard five freshmen. It all adds up to a lot of moving parts and the hope is to have everyone meshing as well as possible before the season opener November 6 against the defending National Champion Virginia Cavaliers.

"It's my very first time being a leader on the court for any team I’ve played for" Elijah Hughes told me on Wednesday.
"I’m really looking forward to it and taking it one day at a time. I’ve just been listening to the coaches and listening to their advice. Someone like G-Mac (Gerry McNamara) who was a leader on his team, listening to what he says and trying to do the same on this team as well."

We’ve enjoyed doing our YouTube Gold series. One of the more interesting if esoteric aspects of that has been seeing the older videos, including the ones that go back to Pilot Life days (okay kids: Pilot Life sponsored the ACC back in the day and all of your elders who watched then - all of them - know the Pilot Life Song. If you want to freak them out, watch this and sing it to them. Even money they’ll sing along. They might even tear up).
One of the things that’s really striking in the older game videos is the simplicity of the graphics. You’ll see the scores and that’s about it. A major innovation was when they started doing them in yellow instead of white. That was big progress.
The basketball was arguably better because the players spent longer in school and knew their craft better but the graphics were primitive.
Why do we mention this?

Because in the last couple of days we’ve seen several articles worrying about providers not picking up the ACC Network, aka ACCN (note to mothership: ACCNet sounds much cooler).

The N&O, ACCSports.com and Art Chansky have all written about this lately.
We’ve been talking about it for a while here and also cord cutting and evolving technology.

Florida State Basketball: Seminoles retool roster for another run at ACC title - College Hoops Watch (Collegehoopswatch.com; Cross)

The Florida State Seminoles were a national threat once again in 2018-19 as coach Leonard Hamilton has built and grown this program to points unseen in Seminoles history. The three losses were to North Carolina, Duke in the ACC Championship game and then Gonzaga in the Sweet 16.

The Seminoles have averaged 26 wins per season over the last three years as they have played in the NCAA Tournament in those seasons. The key will be for scorers to emerge to pick up for the losses on last season’s roster.

Although a star-studded group of seniors in Phil Cofer, Christ Koumadje, Terance Mann, and junior Mfiondu Kabengele and took their talents to the NBA and overseas pro basletball, FSU has plenty of depth and talent which should lead to the Seminoles having a shot to win the ACC crown.

Point guards –
1 – Trent Forrest – 6-4, 210, Sr. –
Defined by his physicality on the perimeter (9.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg)
2 – Anthony Polite, 6-6, 215, So.
– Height and vision combined with instinct make him a contributor on the point (2.7 ppg, 1.6 rpg)
Shooting guards –
1 – M.J. Walker, 6-5, 180, Jr. –
Should be set for a break out season as a scorer (7.5 ppg, 2.2 rpg)
2 – Devin Vassell, 6-6, 180, So –
Led ACC’s freshman with a .419 3-point percentage (4.5 ppg, 1.5 rpg)
3 – Ty Hands, 6-5, 200, Fr. –
Red-shirted after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee prior to last season
Small Forwards –
1 – Patrick Williams, 6-8, 215, Fr. –
5-star and Top 25 recruit who can score over people from three and flourish in the mid-range

The ACC Network is set to launch later this month – in three weeks to be exact – and subscribers to many television providers, including Spectrum, still don’t know if they will receive the channel when it debuts.

The league and the cable network, operated by Charter Communications, still have not reached a carriage agreement, leaving the biggest chunk of television watchers in Central New York in the dark about whether they will have the channel when it launches on Aug. 22.

Neither side is offering much insight, outside of vague public statements.

“We are currently in negotiations to carry the ACC Network and are trying to keep programming costs down for our customers,” said Andrew Russell, Charter’s director of communications in the Northeast. “We hope to reach an agreement soon.”

At ACC football media day last month, ACC commissioner John Swofford noted that the league had planned for a three-year build to maximize distribution because of the timing of Disney’s current contracts.

Disney will have the most negotiating power for the ACC Network when major contracts for ESPN are set to expire. While the ACC Network could be viewed as a luxury by some television watchers, ESPN is a cornerstone of most cable packages, reportedly making it the most expensive channel on cable television.

Both Swofford and Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack have said previously that the negotiations are complicated and frequently go down to the last minute.

With 17 big-screen televisions and six craft beers on tap, sports betting will open today at Turning Stone Casino Resort.

Betting will also begin today at Point Place Casino, in the Madison County town of Bridgeport. The first sports betting lounges in Central New York will allow gamblers to put money on everything from whether the Yankees win tonight to who will win the Super Bowl next February.

The Oneida Indian Nation, which runs both casinos, will hold a grand opening today of the sports betting lounge at Turning Stone, which sits just inside the main doors to the Tower Hotel. The lounge is in front of the Upstate Tavern, in the space where the buffet patio used to be.

“The Lounge with Caesar Sports will feature the most up-to-date elements in sports betting and cutting-edge technology,” said Oneida nation leader Ray Halbritter in a statement. The Oneidas also plan to open a sports betting lounge later this summer at their third casino, Yellow Brick Road Casino, in Chittenango.

All three will be operated by the Oneida nation in partnership with Nevada-based Caesar’s Entertainment. Caesar’s has 30 casinos in the U.S., including the iconic Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The company, which also runs Harrah’s resorts, has annual revenues of about $5 billion.
