Welcome to Chop Suey Day!

This is a day for the American Chinese dish, chop suey. It usually consists of a meat—such as pork, beef, shrimp, chicken, or fish—and eggs, which are quickly cooked in a sauce with vegetables like cabbage, celery, and bean sprouts. It is usually served with rice, but stir-fried noodles may be added. In Cantonese, a Chinese language, its name literally means "odds and ends". There are so many conflicting stories of its origin, that no one really knows where it came from. Most believe it was invented by Chinese Americans. Some say it was made by those working on the transcontinental railroad, or for miners by a Chinese cook in San Francisco. Some claim it was made by the chef of a Chinese official who was visiting the United States in 1896, or that the official wandered into a Chinese restaurant and the chef there came up with it for him using leftovers. A few have also claimed that it is based off a dish from Taishan, a Chinese county in Guangdong province. No matter where it got its start, it is now a prominent food in American Chinese cuisine.

The Syracuse basketball squad has offered 2022 center Donovan Clingan, whom his AAU coach likens to former NBA star Kevin McHale.
The Syracuse basketball program has offered a scholarship to center Donovan Clingan, a class of 2022 prospect who revealed the news via his Twitter page.
The 7-foot Clingan is a rising sophomore at Bristol Central High School in Bristol, Conn.

Mike Waters of Syracuse.com reported that Clingan attended the Orange’s Elite Camp last Saturday. On the AAU circuit, he competes for Team Spartans, a Boston-based group.
I’m not seeing a lot of information on Clingan from the primary recruiting services, but that’s in part due to the fact that he’s only played one season of high-school hoops.
According to this tweet from Shawn McFarland of the Hartford Courant, Clingan averaged 21 points and 18 rebounds as a freshman.

That's pretty darned impressive!

https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2019-08-28/college-basketball-rankings-andy-katzs-power-36-200-days (ncaa.com; Katz)

We are officially 200 days out from Selection Sunday for the 2020 NCAA tournament. With that, it’s time for another preseason Power 36 rankings.
Listed next to the team is the previous ranking, plus one thing to like about each team.
1. Michigan State (1): Point guard Cassius Winston should be the preseason player or the year.

2. Kansas (2): Devon Dotson has a shot to be the Big 12 preseason player of the year.
3. Kentucky (3): Ashton Hagans enters the season as one of the most experienced point guards in the SEC.
4. Duke (4): Tre Jones will be one of the best on-ball defenders.
5. Maryland (5): Point guard Anthony Cowan Jr. will be in step with Winston for possible Big Ten Player of the Year.
6. Seton Hall (7): The Pirates' Myles Powell was the best player on the Big East Pan Am team and could be the Big East preseason player of the year.
7. Texas Tech (6): The Red Raiders found another big-time scorer on the trip to the Bahamas in freshman guard Jahmius Ramsey, who scored 44 points in one of the wins.
8. Florida (8): The Gators have a non-conference schedule that could get them a top seed with games at UConn, at Butler, home vs. Florida State, against Providence in Brooklyn, vs. Utah State in Sunrise, Fla., home vs. Baylor and could face Xavier in the Charleston Classic.

9. Louisville (9): The Cardinals should have the ACC preseason player of the year in Jordan Nwora.

10. North Carolina (10): The Tar Heels will have one of the most watched freshmen in do-everything guard Cole Anthony.
11. Gonzaga (12): The Zags had three players in the top seven in scoring at the FIBA Under 19 tournament in Joel Ayayi (France), Oumar Ballo (Mali) and Filip Petrusev (Serbia).
12. Virginia (13): The more I think about the Cavaliers, the more I want to continue putting them higher. They don’t fade under Tony Bennett.
13. Memphis (11): The Tigers will still need to prove they can handle the spotlight once it starts to shine.

14. Villanova (14): Jermaine Samuels and Collin Gillespie were critical members of the Big East Pan Am team and showed they are ready to lead.
15. Xavier (15): Naji Marshall will enter the season as a first-team All-Big East Player.
16. Purdue (16): The Boilermakers have a rising star in Aaron Wheeler, who will be one of the most entertaining players in the Big Ten.

17. Baylor (17): Devonte Bandoo had a great trip to Italy for the Bears and nearly got a triple-double in the last game with 15 points, 11 boards and nine assists.

18. Ohio State (18): The Buckeyes will have the top freshman in the Big Ten in DJ Carton. Book it.
19. Illinois (20): I’ve moved up the Illini in each Power 36. Ayo Dosunmu averaged 24 points per game on the four-game trip to Italy.
20. Georgetown (19): Omer Yurtseven lived up to his hype for the Hoyas on the trip to the Bahamas. That’s big news to have a finishing big for a team already stacked on the perimeter.
21. Washington (22): Good news for the Huskies. Junior Nahziah Carter had consecutive double-doubles on the trip to Italy. Freshman Isaiah Stewart had a double-double, too. Stewart will be one of the best freshmen in the country.

After 10 amazing days in Italy, we are back home. So grateful for the opportunity to visit new places and compete together as a team! #TougherTogether #Family #Italy2019
— Coach Mike Hopkins (@Coach_Hopkins) August 23, 2019
22. Oregon (NR): The Ducks have loaded up lately with the addition of 6-11 N’Faly Dante, freshman guard Addison Patterson, JC transfer guard Chris Duarte, forward CJ Walker, forward Chandler Lawson, forward Lok Wur, former New Mexico guard Anthony Mathis and Shakur Juiston, who was hurt last season.
23. Utah State (23): The 1-2 punch of Sam Merrill and Neemias Queta will be the duo to beat in the Mountain West.
24. Auburn (21): The Tigers could have one of the top frontcourts in the SEC in Danjel Purifoy and Austin Wiley.
25. Marquette (24): Theo John and Sacar Anim played well for Marquette on the trip to France. That’s huge for a Markus Howard-dominated offense.

26. Saint Mary’s (32): Had a long talk with Randy Bennett this July. I’m all in on the Gaels now. Jordan Ford will lead this team to a bid without needing to win the WCC.

27. Providence (30): Ed Cooley had four players on the Big East Pan Am team, led by Alpha Diallo. AJ Reeves was one of them too. He’s healthy, and that means the Friars should be an NCAA tournament team.
28. Davidson (31): Bob McKillop convinced me when we talked in July that he’s got a squad with guards Kellan Grady and Jon Axel Gudmundsson. I’m going with the Wildcats now as the A-10 favorite.

29. Wisconsin (27): The Badgers will be led by their guards, and if they’re on, then this squad will be a lock for the top six in the Big Ten.
30. Penn State (33): My bold pick was that the Nittany Lions will make the NCAA tournament. I’m feeling more confidence with Lamar Stevens likely an All-Big Ten player.
31. Colorado (26): This is the season McKinley Wright IV leads the Buffaloes to the NCAA tournament.
32. USC (NR): The Trojans will help the Pac-12 have a renaissance. USC had a stellar trip to Europe and freshmen forward Onyeka Okongwu is ready to make a major splash.
33. VCU (25): The Rams will be right there with Davidson. This squad is experienced and won’t get rattled.

137 straight sellouts is a heck of a lot of moments like these.

34. Houston (28): Dejon Jarreau was the leader the Cougars need on their trip to Italy.
35. LSU (NR): The Tigers have a stud in freshman Trendon Watford. The trip to Spain was great for this crew to develop new roles, and to prove there is plenty returning for a team that won the SEC.
36. Vermont (NR): I’ve been rotating teams in this spot throughout the offseason. It’s Vermont’s turn. The Catamounts have a real shot to win a game in the NCAA tournament behind Anthony Lamb’s leadership.

There are a lot of disgruntled ACC fans in the area.

The ACC Network, a TV channel which debuted last week, still has no deals with Cox cable, Comcast cable (Xfinity) or the Dish Network satellite service.

Area residents who are customers of one of those three TV providers expressed their frustration this week when interviewed at Salem Red Sox and Pulaski Yankees games.

UVa fan Charles Harris of Roanoke said he intends to drop Cox cable in favor of a TV provider that has the ACC Network.
“I’m going to find somebody that’s got the ACC Network,” he said. “I’m getting ready to dump Cox anyway because every time I turn around the price is going up. … If they don’t have the ACC channel, that’s kind of a clincher.”

The ESPN-owned ACC Network will broadcast UVa’s first three football games, including Saturday’s opener at Pittsburgh.
The ACC Network will also televise two of Virginia Tech’s first three football games, including Saturday’s opener at Boston College.

The Atlantic Coast Conference finally has its TV channel airing hundreds of league sporting events each year thanks in no small measure to its schools.

Administrations around the ACC played a critical role in getting the channel up and running, spending millions to ensure campus broadcast and production facilities were capable of handling telecasts.

Universities carved out space in current structures in some instances and in other situations built new ones to house state-of-the-art equipment. The facilities include features such as multiple control rooms with display-covered walls or studios with green-screen backdrops and broadcast desks. Designs varied as the only requirement was to ensure the ability to handle a linear broadcast (an event airing at a scheduled time).

"It was an investment in having the network and a number of our schools went beyond the initial investment," ACC Commissioner John Swofford said in an interview with The Associated Press. "And I think wisely so, because there's so many other things that can tie into that benefit them beyond the network. . They decided to go ahead and jump in, do it and get it done from the very beginning rather than piecemeal it along the way."

The ESPN-partnered ACC Network launched last week, roughly three years after the league announced it was going forward with the long-discussed venture. The channel carries its first football game Thursday with reigning national champion Clemson hosting Georgia Tech, one of 450 live events airing annually alongside original programming.

Brandon Nimmo, Jed Lowrie spark Syracuse Mets; return to New York nears (PS; Kramer)

The Syracuse Mets broke fast on Wednesday night, courtesy of two players who know all about a sense of urgency.
Syracuse got back in the win column with an 8-3 decision over Lehigh Valley at NBT Bank Stadium. North leader Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was rained out, so the Mets nudged within a half-game of first place. Syracuse has five games left in the regular season while the RailRiders have six, including a twinbill against Pawtucket on Thursday.

Syracuse enjoyed the services of a pair of rehabbing major leaguers at the top of the lineup, outfielder Brandon Nimmo and infielder Jed Lowrie. Nimmo has been in Syracuse for six games bouncing back from a neck ailment while Lowrie just got here for his second swing through town as he tries to shake off hamstring and calf injuries.

Nimmo led off the game with a single and Lowrie then followed with a single that sent him to third. Both eventually scored as the Mets put up three in the first.

Lowrie played five innings and went 1-for-3. Nimmo played seven and went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a homer.

This has been an especially grueling season for Lowrie, who has played in 1,109 major league games with the Red Sox, Astros and A’s. He inked a two-year, $20 million free agent deal with the Mets in the off-season but has yet to play for that team.

A knee injury cost him most of spring training and then when he came to Syracuse to rehab in May he suffered calf and hamstring ailments. Those kept him off the field until late August, when he played four games in St. Lucie before joining Syracuse.
“It’s hard. You just keep pushing through and find a way to get better. You don’t really have a choice. You just manage it and just continue to work," he said of his comeback. “I’ve always been a patient guy. This time was a little different just because there was a lot of anticipation.
