Welcome to International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

September 19 be "International Talk Like a Pirate Day." Any seadog worth their salt knows that to talk like a pirate, ye must know their lingo and adopt a scurvy pirate accent. Talkin' like a pirate is more than just yellin' "arr" whenever ye feel like it. With a little time and a whole lot of practice, ye'll be speakin' like a proper pirate. And if yer not, avast! To the brig with ye!

Part 1
Practicin' Pirate Vocabulary

Learn sailing lingo. The "Golden Age" of piracy lasted from around 1680 to 1730, a time when most pirates were sailors gone rogue.[1] As wayward sailors, pirates heavily use nautical lingo when conversing. Refer to your friends or co-workers as "mateys," and call people you don't like "scurvy dogs."[2] When you greet someone, say "Ahoy!" When you're surprised or caught off-guard, yell, "Avast!"

  • Don't just throw out sailing terms randomly. Know the history behind them so you can use them correctly. For example, did you know that "shiver me timbers" is the nautical equivalent of saying, "My teeth are chattering with fear?"[3]

Top Syracuse basketball target Andre Jackson taking 2 more official visits (PS; Burrows)

The top target for Syracuse basketball in the 2020 class is taking two more official visits later this month.
Andre Jackson, a four-star prospect from Albany Academy, will visit UConn and Iowa over the next two weekends, according to Adam Zagoria.

Jackson, a 6-foot-6 wing, is the No. 50 recruit for 2020 in ESPN’s rankings and the No. 70 recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings. He has narrowed his list to just Syracuse, UConn, Iowa, UCLA and Maryland.

Yoooooo @andrejackson111, why you do ‘em like that? @SLAM_HS
Jackson was visited by coaches from each of his final five schools last week, including Jim Boeheim and Gerry McNamara. McNamara has been his primary recruiter.

It’s currently unclear when Jackson will make a decision.

“I don’t have a timetable,” Albany Academy coach Brian Fruscio told The Post-Standard’s Donna Ditota last week. “I talked to his mom and they’re going to sit down soon and get a timetable.”

Syracuse Basketball: Top takeaways from the Orange’s ACC line-up (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad will tackle an Atlantic Coast Conference schedule filled with intriguing match-ups and storylines.
The 2019-20 campaign is inching closer for the Syracuse basketball program, and the Orange’s full calendar is now complete, following the recent release of the entire Atlantic Coast Conference docket.

This should prove an interesting stanza for the ‘Cuse, which will possess more depth and offensive weapons, while simultaneously putting forth a roster that is relatively young and includes five freshmen.

Expectations are tempered, Syracuse won’t likely begin this upcoming term as a top-25 crew, and many pundits are projecting that the Orange will sit on the Big Dance bubble throughout 2019-20.

Since the ACC contests have gotten unveiled, it seems appropriate to delve into some of the key takeaways and topics for the ‘Cuse.

First and foremost, the league has expanded its schedule from 18 to 20 affairs, and that means Syracuse will suit up earlier than usual for a pair of ACC encounters. The Orange will kick off the season on Wednesday, Nov. 6, inside the Carrier Dome versus the defending national champions, Virginia.

The Cavaliers lost a bunch of top-flight talent to this past June’s NBA Draft, however, UVA will continue to remain in the upper echelon of the conference. If the ‘Cuse could muster an upset of the Cavaliers, it would set an extremely positive tone for 2019-20. Syracuse also travels to Georgia Tech, which is always a challenging road foe, on Sunday, Dec. 8.

The Orange will square off twice against six of its ACC counterparts, and they are Boston College, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech, as well as previously mentioned Virginia and the Yellow Jackets.

Duke Basketball: What are Blue Devils getting in 2020 G D.J. Steward? (bustingbrackets.com; Simberg)

Four-star D.J. Steward committed to coach Krzyzewski and Duke Basketball over Texas and Louisville. He joins five-stars Jalen Johnson and Jeremy Roach as the third member of the Blue Devils 2020 class.

DJ Steward, a 6’3 combo guard from Chicago, was ranked as low as 112 last winter by 247Sports before a breakout summer on the Nike EYBL. Steward averaged 24.1 points per game while shooting over 50 percent. After his massive spring and summer, the now-committed Duke Basketball guard Steward rose to 26th in the country and is firmly in the conversation for the McDonald’s All-American game.

Krzyzewski continues to do a good job recruiting the Chicago area. He previously nabbed five-stars Jabari Parker and Jahlil Okafor from the Windy City. Steward has a chance to be Illinois’ first McDonald’s All-American since Jalen Brunson in 2015.

In Steward, the Blue Devils are getting a player that can defend and play both guard spots. This will critical playing with Jalen Johnson, who will likely see a lot of time as the primary ball-handler. At 6’8 Johnson might struggle to guard quicker guards so that is where Steward can step in. Steward is also a capable enough three-point shooter to play off of Johnson and can be an excellent secondary playmaker.

Steward also does not necessarily need the ball to make his team better. He is a heady player that does the little things to help his team win. And when he does have the ball, Steward is a load to handle. He’s not overly fast, but he is a crafty ball handler that can get to where he wants on the court. He uses his deceptive length to finish around the rim. Steward does need to add some weight to his lanky frame, but that should come over time.

Steward is not one of these five-star prospects that are guaranteed to spend just one year in college, but he certainly has the upside to play in the NBA at some point. With Steward, I could see a two-and-done path similar to what Tre Jones will likely do this season. A lot will depend on what the Blue Devils roster looks like next season and how much opportunity he gets.

1 in 8 bridges in Central New York ‘structurally deficient,’ according to report (PS; Baker)

One out of every eight Central New York bridges needs significant repairs, according to a new report from a national non profit.
TRIP, a non-profit research organization that studies transportation issues, examined data on 875 bridges in Onondaga, Madison and Oswego Counties and found 101 were rated poor or structurally deficient by the Federal Highway Administration.

Another 528 bridges (60 percent) were rated fair and 246 (28 percent) were rated good.

A bridge is considered structurally deficient if the deck, supports or other major pieces are deteriorating. A bridge in that condition could be closed or its weight rating could be limited if it’s not repaired.

TRIP used the report to call for an increase in federal, state and local funding for New York’s aging infrastructure.
“Without increased and reliable transportation funding, numerous projects to improve and preserve aging bridges in the Syracuse area and statewide will not move forward, hampering New York’s ability to efficiently and safely move people and goods," said TRIP Executive Director Will Wilkins.

TRIP compiled a series of reports for cities across New York, as well as a statewide study.

In the greater Syracuse area, about 911,000 vehicles travel on structurally deficient bridges every day, the report said. The most heavily trafficked bridge that’s in poor condition is the I-690 bridge over North Townsend Street in downtown Syracuse.
According to the report, it would cost $3.6 billion to replace all of the structurally deficient bridges in New York.
