Welcome to World Kindness Day!

Race, religion, gender, politics, country of residence, and other cultural differences can keep people apart, and World Kindness Day uses kindness to bridge the gaps and eliminate the boundaries these differences create so that people can see they have a common human bond. A goal of the day is for people to look beyond themselves to realize they are citizens of the world. Commonalities that people share are focused on, to help make peaceful coexistence possible between people of different backgrounds.

You look good and are very smart!

Syracuse basketball vs. Colgate: What to know (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange has had a week to put last Wednesday’s ugly 48-34 loss to Virginia in the rearview mirror.
The 34 points marked the fewest points for Syracuse in Jim Boeheim’s 44-year coaching tenure. The 14-point margin made it the worst loss to open a season since a 79-64 loss to Canisius in the first game of the 1956-57 season.
Now, the Orange (0-1) must get ready for a different type of challenge.

Unlike Virginia, which was the reigning NCAA champion and ranked in the Top 25, Colgate enters Wednesday’s game at the Carrier Dome as a dangerous underdog.

The Red Raiders (1-1) have four starters back from a team that won the Patriot League last year.

Game is at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on YES and will also be available online via ACC Network Extra.

Here are 10 key things to know for as Syracuse takes the court against Colgate tonight:

The historical significance

This will mark the 172nd meeting between Syracuse and Colgate on the basketball hardwood. Syracuse has played more games against Colgate than any other opponent. The next most frequent opponent for SU is Cornell with 124 games in their series.

Colgate and SU first met on Jan. 15, 1902. Syracuse holds a 126-45 lead in the series. The Orange has won 53 consecutive games against the Red Raiders. That’s the longest win streak for a college basketball team against another school in NCAA history.

Colgate’s last win over Syracuse was a 67-63 win at the Onondaga County War Memorial on Feb. 24, 1962.

Don’t laugh. Colgate might finally be ready to spring an upset on Syracuse basketball (PS; Axe)

Colgate and Syracuse will play a men’s college basketball game for the 172nd time at the Carrier Dome on Wednesday night.

Syracuse has not lost to the Raiders since 1962, the same year Jim Boeheim enrolled at SU and John F. Kennedy was President of the United States. The Orange leads the all-time series over the Raiders by a mark of 126-45.
Syracuse’s 53-game winning streak over the Raiders is the longest active streak in Division I men’s college basketball.

Could that Orange winning streak come to a screeching halt tonight?

Don’t laugh at that thought.

Colgate returns four of five starters and 80 percent of its scoring from a team that made a run to the 2019 NCAA Tournament and gave Tennessee all it could handle in that dance.

Senior forward Rapolas Ivanauskas, the 2018-19 Patriot League Player of the Year and honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press, is back and will be a bear to handle inside. He’s averaging 19 points per game.

Junior guard Jordan Burns, who hit eight 3-pointers against the Vols in that NCAA Tournament game, is back. Senior forward Will Rayman, who shot 43 percent from distance a year ago, is too. Junior guard Jack Ferguson, who hit six three’s at the Dome two seasons ago, is still on the Raiders’ roster. Sophomore guard Tucker Richardson, the 2019 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, returns.

Syracuse can fortify thin frontcourt through non-conference play (DO; Alvarez)

Jesse Edwards checked into Syracuse’s first exhibition game against Daemen with a personal goal: Score early, then defer to teammates and focus on defense. It was Oct. 26 and Edwards entered after SU missed a rebound. Off a designed inbound play, Edwards set a screen, scraped toward the baseline and threw his hands up.

Seeing the 6-foot-11 center roll, Buddy Boeheim fed a bounce pass. Edwards just wanted one field goal, this one a lay-up through contact. It was a key moment in his development, if not his own personal trivia. When was my first bucket in the Carrier Dome? Yet, Orange head coach Jim Boeheim tempered expectations.
“Jesse has been playing well in practice,” Jim Boeheim said after the matchup against Daemen on Oct. 26, “but he’s not ready yet.”

In SU’s historic season-opening loss to Virginia, Edwards totaled five minutes. He’s still not ready, confounding SU’s front court depth issue. Nearly half (26) of UVA’s 48 points came in the heart of the 2-3 zone and the Cavaliers outrebounded Syracuse 47-28. Within five minutes Bourama Sidibe was on the bench with two fouls and no clear solutions presented themselves. Re-slotted at center, Marek Dolezaj anchored the defense even though Boeheim said he’d prefer playing Dolezaj at the four.

Syracuse basketball opens as heavy favorite against Colgate (PS; Burrows)

Syracuse basketball is a heavy favorite when it takes on Colgate Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome.
The Orange opened as 10.5-point favorites against the Raiders, according to Vegas Insider. The over/under is 137.

Syracuse (0-1, 0-1) is looking to regroup after losing to No. 11 Virginia, 48-34, last week to open the regular season. The Orange’s 34 points against the Cavaliers is the lowest since scoring 28 against Sampson Navy in 1945.
Colgate (1-1) is coming off a loss at Clemson, but is widely expected to repeat as the Patriot League’s top team.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Here are the Orange headlines for Wednesday:

Colgate (1-1) heads to the Carrier Dome on Wednesday for the 172nd all-time meeting at Syracuse (0-1). The Orange hold a 126-45 all-time advantage in the series and have won 53 straight head-to-head. Colgate is looking for its first win over Syracuse since 1962. The Raiders battled ACC foe Clemson down to the wire, but succumbed to a late run in an 81-68 defeat on Sunday. Through two games, Rapolas Ivanauskas is averaging 19 points per game to lead four Raiders posting double figures. Syracuse fell to defending national champion Virginia 48-34 last Wednesday at home and is looking to avoid starting 0-2 for the first time since 1968.

ACC Basketball Power Rankings: Week 1 (fromtherumbleseat.com; Sisbarro)

The writers from From the Rumble Seat kick off a weekly series for ACC power rankings.

1. Louisville Cardinals (2-0, 1-0)
Don’t be fooled by the Miami score. Louisville obliterated a talented Miami team on the road and led 85-58 with 3:58 to go in the second half before pulling their starters. Jordan Nwora started off his junior campaign on the right foot averaging 22 points and 9 rebounds on 56% shooting through two games. Nwora has been able to do whatever he wants offensively and is my pick for ACC Player of the Year. Redshirt senior Ryan McMahon has been on fire for the Cardinals as well, averaging 4 3-pointers per game and shooting at a 57% clip. Louisville should cruise this week with 2 non Power 5 home games.
Last Week:
Win at Miami 87-74
Win vs Youngstown St 78-55
Next Week:
11/13 vs Indiana St
11/17 vs NC Central

2. Duke Blue Devils (2-0, 0-0)
It’s hard not to be impressed with Duke after coming from behind to beat the #3 team in the country, the Kansas Jayhawks. The Blue Devils followed it up by dismantling Colorado St by 34 points. Sophomore Tre Jones has been doing it all, averaging 15 points, 5.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game and is well on his way to a first team All-ACC season. Cassius Stanley has been the freshman standout so far this season, averaging 16 points and 4.5 rebounds per game on 77% shooting. Up next for Duke are two non Power 5 home games, including Georgia St.
Last Week:
Win vs #3 Kansas 68-66
Win vs Colorado St 89-55
Next Week:
11/12 vs Central Arkansas
11/15 vs Georgia St
3. Virginia Cavaliers (2-0, 1-0)
Sorry Tar Heel fans. The Cavs began their title defense with two straight lock-down performances on defense. I mean COME ON! Through two games, Tony Bennett’s squad is giving up 34 points per game?! Virginia has struggled offensively, but when your defense is that stifling it doesn’t matter. Senior Mamadi Diakite leads the way for the Cavs with 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He has also contributed 3 blocks/steals per game. Braxton Key, Kihei Clark, and Jay Huff have been the other main contributors for Virginia so far. Up next is a team that just took Wake to the bitter end, but I don’t imagine Columbia being a tough game for Virginia at all.
Last Week:
Win at Syracuse 48-34
Win vs James Madison 65-34
Next Week:
11/16 vs Columbia

Ragged conference games better than ordinary openers for ACC basketball (dailypress.com; Teel)

Virginia Tech and Syracuse couldn’t have had more contrasting experiences last week as the ACC opened the men’s basketball season with an unprecedented seven league games.

The Hokies won at Clemson 67-60, sending their confidence, in the words of freshman Nahiem Alleyne, “through the roof.”

The Orange lost at home to Virginia 48-34, scoring the program’s fewest points in 74 years.

But there was a common denominator between Tech and Syracuse: Coaches Mike Young and Jim Boeheim, like most of their colleagues, would rather be muzzled and belted to the bench than start another season versus a conference rival.

And I get it. League games are important, and wading into the year against a lower-level opponent is far less stressful.

But players enjoyed the early test, and the contests drew larger crowds and created far more intrigue than garden-variety openers. Moreover, this scheduling experiment was rooted in the fledgling ACC Network and every Power Five conference’s dependence on television revenue.
