Welcome to Equal Opportunity Day!

The Gettysburg Address is celebrated today by various groups in different ways, and the holiday is given a few different names. It is informally named Gettysburg Address Day simply because it marks the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's reading of the Gettysburg Address. It is also known as Equal Opportunity Day. This day was created by the National Urban League in 1956 and continues to be celebrated as such by the league and others, being proclaimed by politicians on multiple occasions. The third name given to the day is Dedication Day, having been formally named as such by a joint resolution of Congress in 1946. It continues to be celebrated as Dedication Day at the Gettysburg National Cemetery.

The Battle of Gettysburg took place on July 1-3, 1863, between Robert E. Lee's Confederate forces and the Union Army of the Potomac under George G. Meade, in the southern Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. The Confederates were defeated, and Lee and his men retreated on the Fourth of July, the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was a battle of high casualties, with 23,000 Union and 28,000 Confederate soldiers killed, wounded, or missing, out of the 170,000 that fought.

Orange Watch: The last time Syracuse basketball played at Colgate and Cornell - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Following Syracuse’s first win of this season against Colgate, and the subsequent NIT victory over Seattle last Saturday, there will be a couple of days of talk about the Boeheim vs. Boeheim matchups with Cornell’s annual appearance in the Dome occurring Wednesday night (7:30 p.m. ET / ACCNX). The Big Red have played in Syracuse every year this century except 2000, 03, 06, 2011, and ’12, and the last 26 meetings have been played in the Dome. It’s a similar story with Colgate. The teams have met every season dating back to 1993, all at the Dome, including last week’s win over the Raiders. Your have to go back to Dec. 1977 to mark the last time SU hoops played in Hamilton, and Dec. 1981 the last time Jim Boeheim coached the ‘Cuse in Ithaca. We are probably among the few hundred who attended both games.

Can you imagine it in today’s ACC every-game-on-TV/streaming era?

Cotterell Court

Jim Boeheim coaching the Orangemen at 1,750 seat Cotterell Court (celebrating its 60th anniversary) in Hamilton? Yes, it happened on Dec 12, 1977, in an era when SU basketball still played road games in gymnasiums, before the Big East took off in the early 1980s and grew into drawing sell-out crowds at pro sports arenas (and a certain domed football stadium) along the Eastern Seaboard.

In fact, Syracuse and Colgate used to play twice a season in the 1960s, but that filtered down to annual matchups the following decade. The last meeting in Hamilton was on a typically cold December midweek night, and it was the first game following the famous win over Ervin ‘Magic’ Johnson and Michigan State in the initial Carrier Classic, and the infamous Boeheim tirade in the Manley Field House lobby that followed when he demanded to know from the two local beat writers with the Syracuse newspapers why Johnson beat out Marty Byrnes for tournament MVP honors.

Senior Byrnes, who later played five seasons with five teams in the NBA, including a cameo appearance in the Los Angeles Lakers Game Six, title-clinching win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1980 Finals, was the leading scorer (16.3 ppg) on the 1977-78 Orangemen. He started at forward against Colgate alongside sophomore Louis Orr, with fellow sophomore Roosevelt Bouie at center, and senior Ross Kindel and junior Dale Shackleford in the backcourt.

Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim uses NBA to motivate Quincy Guerrier (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim has used the NBA to motivate freshman Quincy Guerrier. Here are all the details.

Coaches have used a variety of tactics to motivate their players over the years.

On Saturday night Syracuse basketball freshman Quincy Guerrier revealed that Jim Boeheim often pokes and prods him about the NBA to get him revved up:

“Sometimes coach Boeheim tells me to stop thinking about the NBA even if I’m not thinking about it. I’m thinking about winning games. So he has used that since it came out.”

Prior to the season starting Guerrier appeared in a prominent 2020 NBA Mock Draft via Jeff Goodman of Stadium as a first-round draft choice.

Quincy said that he saw that but “it doesn’t change my approach and said he still has plenty to work on.”

That includes his free throw shooting which was very hit-and-miss vs Seattle, finishing 8-of-14 from the charity stripe.

"Ah, I missed six free throws, today man, I should’ve had 20 points. I’m going to be back in the gym tomorrow and shoot a bunch of free throws to make sure that never happens again.”

Jim Boeheim said he’s a good free-throw shooter, despite what he showed vs the Redhawks.

ACC Basketball Power Rankings: Week 2 (fromtherumbleseat.com; Sisbarro)

The writers from From the Rumble Seat continue a weekly series for ACC power rankings. The following rankings are based on games through Sunday 11/17.

1. Louisville Cardinals (4-0, 1-0)

AP Rank: 2
Kenpom: 2
Last Week Power Rank: 1

The Cards shined again this week against inferior competition with two 29 point home wins against Indiana St and NC Central. Jordan Nwora continued his impressive start to the season, with 21 and 17 points in those games respectively, and has yet to shoot below 50% in a single game. As a team, Louisville is shooting the lights out of the ball to start the season, leading the country in field goal percentage (56.6%) and are 10th in 3-point percentage (44.3%). It’ll be virtually impossible to keep this up, but while they do, they won’t be beat. Up next for Chris Mack’s team are home games against USC Upstate and Akron.

Last Week:
Win vs Indiana St 91-62
Win vs NC Central 87-58

This Week:
11/20 vs USC Upstate
11/24 vs Akron

2. Duke Blue Devils (4-0, 0-0)

AP Rank: 1
Kenpom: 4
Last Week Power Rank: 2

The Blue Devils remain the #2 team in the power rankings after a dominant win over Central Arkansas and a convincing win against Georgia St. Duke saw balanced scoring in the win over Central Arkansas, while Tre Jones erupted for 31 points on above 50% from the field against Georgia St. Duke will travel to New York to play Cal in the Empire Classic. They would then play either Georgetown or Texas the next day.

Last Week:
Win vs Central Arkansas 105-54
Win vs Georgia St 74-63

This Week:
11/21 vs California*
11/22 TBD Game 2 of Empire Classic*

3. Virginia Cavaliers (3-0, 1-0)

AP Rank: 7
Kenpom: 3
Last Week Power Rank: 3

Well it another year of grind it out games with incredible defense for the Cavaliers. Virginia defeated Columbia, while allowing a season high 42 points (WHAT?!). I cannot believe that UVA is allowing under 40 points per game through 3 games. I mean I can, but wow that is impressive. Mamadi Diakite and Jay Huff led the way for Virginia with 13 points each against Columbia. The Cavaliers will play a strong mid major in Vermont before heading to Connecticut to play UMass in the Air Force Reserve Hall of Fame Tip-off. In game 2, the Cavs will face either Arizona St or St Johns.

Last Week:
Win vs Columbia 60-42

This Week:
11/19 vs Vermont
11/23 vs UMass*
11/24 vs TBD Game 2 of Air Force Reserve Hall of Fame Tip-off*

4. North Carolina Tar Heels (3-0, 1-0)

AP Rank: 5
Kenpom: 7
Last Week Power Rank: 4

The Tar Heels will stay put at number 4 in the Power Rankings this week despite the win over Gardner-Webb. Cole Anthony dazzled again, putting up 28 points, while Armando Bacot chipped in a double-double (12 points and 11 rebounds). North Carolina won’t have much of an opportunity to move up the Power Rankings this week as they only have Elon on the schedule. They would need a Duke or Virginia loss to climb the ladder.

Last Week:
Win vs Gardner-Webb 77-61

This Week:
11/20 vs Elon

5. NC State Wolfpack (3-1, 0-1)

AP Rank: N/A
Kenpom: 43
Last Week Power Rank: 8

NC State has looked much better now that Markell Johnson and DJ Funderburk have returned. Funderburk and Manny Bates are seemingly able to coexist with both players putting up double figures in each game last week. CJ Bryce continued his strong play shooting 13-25 on the week. The Wolfpack are picking up wins despite Markell Johnson clearly not being at full strength, evidenced by him shooting 23% this season. NC State will be a force to be reckoned with once he rounds into form. Look for the Pack to pick up 2 more wins this week against Alcorn St and Arkansas Little Rock.

Last Week:
Win vs FIU 86-77
Win vs St. Francis (NY) 95-64

This Week:
11/19 vs Alcorn St
11/23 vs Arkansas Little Rock

6. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2-0, 1-0)

AP Rank: N/A
Kenpom: 63
Last Week Power Rank: 6

The Jackets only had one game last week against Elon, but performed well enough to cover the spread and capture a 23 point win. Michael Devoe has been a star thus far and the emergence of Khalid Moore will give the Jackets another strong defensive option. We will learn a lot about this Georgia Tech team this week as it heads to Athens to face a talented but young uga squad and hosts undefeated Arkansas. It will be interesting to see how effective of a defender Khalid Moore is against a potential top 3 pick in Anthony Edwards. Going 1-1 with a close loss could allow them to hold on to their number 6 spot.

Last Week:
Win vs Elon 64-41

This Week:
11/20 at uga
11/25 vs Arkansas

7. Florida St Seminoles (2-1, 0-1)

AP Rank: N/A
Kenpom: 15
Last Week Power Rank: 5

Last week I had FSU ranked highly due to knocking off a preseason top 10 team, the Florida Gators. After squeaking by Towson, the Gators fell to UCONN, so that win isn’t looking as impressive anymore. FSU also struggled in their only game of the week against Western Carolina. The Noles actually trailed in that game with under a minute to go before hitting several free throws to clinch a 5 point win. Florida St is still trying to figure out who the go-to scorer will be as each game has brought a new leading scorer. Leonard Hamilton’s crew will face Chattanooga and St Francis this week in an effort to rebound from a lackluster performance against Western Carolina.

Last Week:
Win vs Western Carolina 79-74

This Week:
11/20 vs Chattanooga
11/23 vs St Francis (PA)

8. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-1, 0-1)

AP Rank: N/A
Kenpom: 46
Last Week Power Rank: 7

Notre Dame was able to record two wins last week against Howard and Marshall. However, the Irish drop one spot this week due to an unconvincing win against Marshall as well as poor shooting. Notre Dame ranks 273rd in the country in 3 point percentage (28.8%) while attempting the 58th most 3 pointers (104). That is just not going to get it done against a high caliber team. The bright side for the Irish was that John Mooney returned to form, averaging 23 points and 16 rebounds in the two games. Notre Dame should cruise against Presbyterian before facing off against a kenpom top 75 team in Toledo.

Last Week:
Win vs Howard 79-50
Win vs Marshall 74-64

This Week:
11/18 vs Presbyterian
11/21 vs Toledo

9. Virginia Tech (4-0, 1-0)

AP Rank: N/A
Kenpom: 44
Last Week Power Rank: 9

The opponents were not strong, but Virginia Tech dispelled USC Upstate and Lehigh with ease. Landers Nolley was an absolute stud in both games recording 23 and and 27 respectively. Nolley was also extremely efficient shooting 18-33 and 11-19 from beyond the arc. For the season, Landers is shooting 50% from the field and 47% from 3. He’s been a huge reason behind the 4-0 start for the Hokies. Virginia Tech will host Delaware St at home on Wednesday in their only game of the week.

Last Week:
Win vs USC Upstate 80-57
Win vs Lehigh 79-53

This Week:
11/20 vs Delaware St

10. Miami Hurricanes (3-1, 0-1)

AP Rank: N/A
Kenpom: 59
Last Week Power Rank: 11

Since their season opening blowout loss against Louisville, Miami has looked strong. The Canes picked up a road win against Johnny Dawkins’s UCF squad and followed it up with a blowout win by 28 against Quinnipiac. Kam McGusty led the team in scoring in both games last week, averaging 19.5 points in those contests. Even better for Miami is that star guard Chris Lykes hasn’t rounded into form yet. He will provide the Hurricanes with an even greater offensive boost. Miami’s lone game this week will be at home against Missouri St.

Last Week:
Win at UCF 79-70
Win vs Quinnipiac 80-52

This Week:
11/21 vs Missouri St

11. Syracuse Orange (2-1, 0-1)

AP Rank: N/A
Kenpom: 51
Last Week Power Rank: 12

Syracuse moves up a spot this week due to convincing wins against the preseason Patriot league favorite (Colgate) and Seattle. Syracuse is fairly well rounded in scoring, with 5 different players reaching double figures against Seattle and a different player leading the team in scoring every game. However, the Orange have a shooting problem as they are just 30.4% from beyond the arc. Up next this week are games at home against non Power 5 teams that are a combined 3-5. This could help Joe Girard and Buddy Boeheim going from deep.

Last Week:
Win vs Colgate 70-54
Win vs Seattle 89-67

This Week:
11/20 vs Cornell
11/23 vs Bucknell

Girard not afraid of the spotlight (247sports.com; Johnson)

Just about a year ago, Glens Fall High School would raise the state championship banner for football on none other than the turf of the Dome in Syracuse. Their quarterback? Joseph Girard.

About four months later, they would be crowned as state champions for basketball as well. Broome county erupted after a buzzer beating bucket to win by none other than New York’s all-time leading scorer. That kid? Joe Girard.

Two state titles in his senior year of high school, one of them taking place in the Dome. And now, it’s like Girard has been at home the whole time. In Syracuse.

People weren’t really sure if the fan favorite was going to be on the floor to make an immediate impact. It wasn’t clear if he’d be entertaining us with his deep range ability too often in his freshman year. But he would make sure that all of us and his family and friends making the trip across the state would get to see a show and that being a freshman doesn’t matter.

“I’m one that doesn’t like the freshman excuse. I’m here to play and here to win games,” said Girard in the locker room after the win Saturday. “Don’t play scared. Just because we’re freshmen doesn’t mean that we can’t play. We live in the now.”

So just minutes in to the Colgate game on Wednesday, Jalen Carey would make serveral mistakes and Coach Boeheim would go to Girard on the bench. From that moment a new script was written for the Glens Falls boy.

How Syracuse Football and Basketball are Responding to #NotAgainSU – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

The #NotAgainSU movement has gripped not only the Central New York community but the national news landscape for the better part of the last week. Numerous bias incidents fueled by racist and anti-Semitic language and symbols have been reported across the Syracuse University Campus. These incidents plus a lack of response by the University have led to a sit-in protest at the brand-new Barnes Center that’s working into its seventh day as of Monday night.

That protest has garnered massive amounts of attention throughout the region as other schools weigh in and national news organizations like the Today Show and NBC News Tonight travel to Syracuse to cover the protest. Because of its high-profile nature, many prominent figures in the community have been asked to comment on the events that continue to unfold while others have visited the protestors at the Barnes Center.

That list includes SU basketball coach Jim Boeheim who brought pizza to protestors before the Orange’s matchup with Seattle on Saturday night. Because of comments he had made earlier in the week after the Colgate game, the protestors voted to not accept the pizza and donate it. Boeheim spoke with students about their concerns and many protestors thanked him for being there. Here’s how Coach Boeheim and other prominent SU sports figures are responding to the #NotAgainSU protests.

BASKETBALL

Jim Boeheim

“What you’re doing is what we do in this country. This is how you evoke change. Remember, I was here in the 60s. This is not even a protest compared to the 60s. I went through that.”

Virginia Basketball Has Arrived (DBR; Jacobs)

We can safely say Tony Bennett’s Virginia program has peaked. Whether and how long it can stay at the ACC’s and the nation’s highest level we’ll just have to see. (Or, if you’re big on clichés, it remains to be seen.)

Let’s state things this way: The Cavs have satisfied most every measure of success, ratification coming in much more than winning last season’s NCAA championship.

Focus on the period since 2014, when through expansion the ACC imported several exceptional basketball programs, presumably upping the degree of difficulty within the conference. Bennett’s boys hit their stride over those six years, with six straight NCAA trips, four 30-win seasons, four first-place ACC finishes, two ACC Tournament championships, six NBA draft picks and that ’19 NCAA title.

In all games over those six years, the Cavs won 83.2 percent of the time, including a cumulative 100-23 record against ACC opponents during the league’s regular season and tournament (an 81.3 percent success rate). The Cavs had a single season with double-digit losses overall.

Duke and North Carolina are right there with Virginia.

Each has six NCAA appearances since 2014. UNC won an NCAA title during that span (2017); so did Duke (2015). The Tar Heels finished first during two regular seasons. The Devils won two ACC Tournaments (2017, 2019), the Heels one (2016). Duke had a single season with double-digit losses (25-11 in 2016), North Carolina had four.

Carolina was a combined 79-29 (a .731 winning percentage) during the last six ACC regular seasons, Duke 77-31 (.713). Overall the Blue Devils won 78.1 percent of their games, UNC 76.0

MEN’S BASKETBALL HELD OFF AT ACC’S PITT, 63-50 - Monmouth University Athletics (monmouthhawks.com)

Monmouth University Men's Basketball (1-4) had the game tied in the second half and were within single digits in the final two minutes, but the University of Pittsburgh (3-2) was able to hold off the Hawks on Monday at Petersen Events Center, 63-50. Mustapha Traore (Philadelphia, PA/The Phelps School) led MU in scoring with 12 points, while Ray Salnave (Elmont, NY/Benjamin N. Cardozo) scored in double figures for the fifth time in a row to open the year.

The Blue and White immediately got it tied out of the locker room, and with less than 16 minutes remaining, the game was knotted at 28. The Hawks went down six when Xavier Johnson hit a long three and Justin Champagnie finished at the rim, but MU cut it down to four multiple times, including when George Papas (Jersey City, NJ/Union Catholic) stopped and pulled a wing three with 10:00 to play to make it 41-37. Melik Martin's (York, PA/York Catholic) foul line jumper at 9:39 kept the Hawks within four, but a 5-0 run gave Pitt a nine-point lead. MU kept it right at that number until the final seconds, when Pitt converted six free throws to win it 63-50.

NOTES AND QUOTES

"I am glad my kids played better than they did last week. We had a tough one against Kansas and it got away from us. I wasn't sure if we were going to hang our heads because that is a hard one to bounce back from so quickly. I was really proud of my club. I thought we gave them a scare for a little while. Then it got away from us. We were down nine and then they could relax and make a couple plays that if they would have went the other way, maybe we could have stolen one from them." – Head Coach King Rice
