Welcome to Alascattalo Day!

Alascattalo Day honors Alaskan humor and is named for the alascattalo, a fictitious animal that is a cross between a moose and a walrus, that is said to have been bred by miners during the Alaskan Gold Rush around the turn of the twentieth century. The creature is believed to have come about as a response to stupid questions asked by tourists. For instance, some tourists have asked where Alaskan penguins can be found, and Alaskans have jokingly told tourists places to go look for them. Of course, penguins do not live in Alaska. Some have used a similar humor called "absurding" to answer questions. For instance, they have talked to tourists about the alacattalo when there is no such creature.

Elijah Hughes keeps Syracuse’s most important conversation front-and-center in the Carrier Dome (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team competed a few hundred feet from the campus’ most important event on Wednesday night, taking the floor in the Carrier Dome at the same time that much of the school community met in Hendricks Chapel to discuss a week full of hateful acts around the campus.

The basketball game went on as scheduled, in front of an announced crowd of 21,123 fans, with relatively few signs of the campus unrest making their way under the Carrier Dome’s roof, where Syracuse beat Cornell 72-53.

Syracuse star Elijah Hughes made sure the conversation wasn’t completely omitted from the proceedings.

After visiting with student protesters over the weekend and communicating with some during the week, Hughes said he went to his teammates with the idea to wear #NotAgainSU T-shirts before the game against Cornell to support the school’s protest movement.

Hokies men’s hoops sets school record and ACC record in victory over Delaware State (wtkr.com; Plain)

Nahiem Alleyne scored 20 points and Virginia Tech hit a school-record 21 3-pointers en route to a 100-64 nonconference victory over Delaware State at Carilion Clinic Court on Wednesday.

With the victory, the Hokies moved to 5-0 on the season. Delaware State fell to 0-5.
Alleyne hit 7 of 11 from the floor, including five 3-pointers, and Jalen Cone added 17 points to help the Hokies extend their home nonconference winning streak to 28 consecutive games. The freshmen guards led a balanced Virginia Tech attack in which nine players scored – and seven of them hit at least one 3-pointer.

The Hornets actually jumped out to a 7-0 lead, hitting three of their first five shots from the floor. But the Hokies found their shooting stroke and scored the next 11 points, never trailing again. The Hokies hit eight 3-pointers in the first half in grabbing a 45-27 halftime lead, and then they blew the game wide open in the second half, hitting 13 3’s and scoring 55 points.

Tech also set an ACC record with its 21 3-pointers. The Hokies hit 21 of their 37 3-point attempts, with Alleyne, Cone and Isaiah Wilkins hitting five each. Virginia Tech shot a season-best 56.5% (35 of 62) from the floor.

ACC Roundup - Heels Struggle Against Elon (DBR; King)

In Wednesday’s ACC action, Louisville smacked USC Upstate 76-50, Florida State clobbered UT-Chattanooga 89-53, BC’s Eagles beat the guest Eagles from Eastern Washington 72-68, Virginia Tech opened a can of whoop-ass on Delaware State, winning 100-64, Syracuse knocked off Cornell in the Boeheim Bowl 72-53, Georgia nipped the Yellow Jackets 82-78 and UNC survived Elon 75-61.

We got an idea of what might happen if freshman star Cole Anthony were limited offensively and while he did have 10 rebounds and eight assists, he shot just 4-14 and the game was very nearly tied at halftime.

UNC got a bit of separation early in the second but never really handled Elon like you might have expected. Armando Bacot had a big game with 22 points and 14 boards and Garrison Brooks had 14 points and six boards.

UNC out rebounded the Phoenix 56-26 and didn't turn the ball over (just 10 turnovers) so how did Elon hang around?

Three point shooting and foul shots.

Elon had 36 points from deep and hit all nine free throws and that’s 45 points leaving 16 on whatever else they managed.

Young Anthony came close to a triple double and he’s a major talent but he’s not what you would call efficient. He’s 30-79 (37.9 percent) on the season and that’s not against great competition.

1924: Syracuse’s first professional radio station, WFBL, makes its debut broadcast (PS; Croyle)

Entertainment in Syracuse changed forever on the evening of Nov. 19, 1924.

On that date, Syracuse’s first professional radio station, WFBL, sent out its first program beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“Go home and turn on the loudspeaker,” the Syracuse Herald announced the day before, “and even hash will have the latest French dressing under the melodies that will fill the dining room.”

Home, the newspaper predicted, “never will be the same again.”

And it all started from a hotel room.

The studio for WFBL was located on the 11th floor of the Onondaga Hotel, on the corner of Warren and Jefferson streets, and it would require over a year of preparation between the Radio Dealers Association and the hotel, to make opening night possible.
