Welcome to Humane Society Anniversary Day!

Founded in 1954, the Humane Society of the United States fights the big fights to end suffering for all animals, not just dogs and cats. We work to stop large-scale cruelties such as animal fighting, puppy mills, factory farming and the wildlife trade. Along with our supporters and volunteers, we work to pass anti-cruelty laws, end the extreme confinement of farm animals in cages, stop cosmetics testing on animals, halt cruelty to wildlife and bring veterinary services to pets in underserved communities. Along with our affiliates, we care for more than 100,000 animals each year through our rescue teams, sanctuaries and wildlife centers. To learn how we put your dollars to work, take a look at our annual reports and financial statements.

Syracuse basketball vs. Bucknell: What to know (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange returns to the Carrier Dome court to take on the Bucknell Bison on Saturday.

This is the last of five home games to open the season before Syracuse heads to New York City where it will play in the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Barclays Center on Wednesday and Friday. In fact, after facing Bucknell at the Dome, Syracuse will play four of its next five games away from home.

Bucknell brings a 2-3 record into the game. Bucknell coach Nathan Davis will use a starting lineup of two seniors, two juniors and one sophomore with three starters back from a team that shared the Patriot League’s regular season title last year.

The Bison have beaten Fairfield and Hofstra with narrow losses to Vermont (66-63) and Canisius (83-81). In its most recent outing, Bucknell suffered a 98-70 loss to undefeated Penn State.

Syracuse (3-1) has won three straight after dropping its season-opener to Virginia.

The game is scheduled for a noon opening tip. The game will be televised on the ACC Network.

Here are 10 key things to know as Syracuse gets ready to play Bucknell:

The historical significance

Syracuse and Bucknell first met on the hardwood in the 1914-15 season. Syracuse won that initial meeting 37-20 on March 3, 1915 at Archbold Gym, but the two schools have played just nine times since then.

Syracuse holds a 9-1 lead in the all-time series. But Bucknell’s lone win over SU wasn’t that long ago. The Bison beat Syracuse 74-69 at the Carrier Dome on Nov. 22, 2005.

Syracuse basketball needs better bench play to reach potential (itlh; Lee)

The bench for the Syracuse basketball team left a lot to be desired vs Cornell. Here are the details and why they have to play better for the Orange.

The Syracuse basketball bench struggled and saw minimum production in the first half vs Cornell on Wednesday.
The bench of Quincy Guerrier and Brycen Goodine had two of their first-half turnovers almost instantly. In total the bench helped keep Cornell in the game early.

Outside of the low scoring output, the bench started poorly right out of the gate. Guerrier and Goodine checked in first and turned the ball over three times. Bourama Sidibe picked up his fourth foul with less than 10 minutes in the second half, forcing coach Jim Boeheim to put Guerrier back in. The first half saw the bench only play seven percent of the minutes (14 of 200).
The second half Guerrier was more assertive once he came in for Sidibe. Guerrier settled for two jumpers that caused coach Boeheim to take the freshman out. In his return in the second half, Guerrier was more assertive drawing two fouls almost immediately and a strong finish from a left-side drive and right-handed finish.

Guerrier also hit his first college career three-pointer that helped that was in the middle of a 14-3 run during a 4:25 stretch of the second half. Guerrier had 8 of his 10 points on the night during this run.

Syracuse Men's Basketball Looks to Ride Win Streak Against Bucknell (waer.org)

The Syracuse Men’s Basketball team is on a three-game win streak. Wednesday night, the Orange defeat Cornell in the Battle of the Boeheim’s Three. This weekend, Bucknell comes to the Dome. The Bisons are currently 2-3 with their most recent loss coming in a game against Penn State.

Sophomore Jalen Carey is undergoing thumb surgery which opens up the door for freshman Joe Girard. Girard had already been named the starter and started against both Seattle and Cornell, but now he can do so without Carey breathing down his neck. Girard started off hot with 24 points in his first game as a starter. Against the Big Red, he came back to earth with only nine points. Look for him to bounce back against Bucknell. When the Bisons faced the Nittany Lions, they allowed 12 points to guard Myles Dread. Canisius guard Malik Johnson lead the Golden Griffins to victory over Bucknell with 27 points. This game will definitely build off the foundation Girard has laid down.

A player who can have a breakout performance this weekend is freshman Quincy Guerrier. Guerrier has been on the rise the last two games, recording double digits in both. In the game against PSU, the Bisons allowed forward Mike Watkins score almost 20 points. Guerrier has increased his presence on the court and he will continue to develop in this matchup.

Trombi’s Tower vertical obstacle course to open next week at Destiny USA (PS; Tampone)

Trombi’s Tower, a five-level vertical obstacle course for kids, will open on Black Friday, Nov. 29, at Destiny USA.

The structure has been under construction for months in the Canyon area at Destiny. It's toward the back of the area, near the mall's Texas de Brazil location.

The attraction is aimed at kids ages 5 to 12. Obstacles will include various climbing, maze and traverse challenges.

Kids will have to avoid triggering sensors that set off lights and sounds as they make their way through the maze. When they reach the top of the tower, a giant slide that twists around the outside of the structure will take them back down.

Kids will earn points based on how well they do in the course and will be able to compare their scores online with friends.

Parents will also be able to drop their children at the tower and return to pick them up later. The venue will have a system to allow parents to watch a livestream of their kids at play inside.

Entertainment venues like Trombi’s Tower have been a big priority for Destiny since it began filling its expansion section, which opened in 2012. Some of those tenants, such as WonderWorks, Billy Beez and 5 Wits, have been big hits.

Others (looking at you Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill) have been less successful.
