Welcome to International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women!

Violence against women and girls around the world is still a widespread human rights issue and a symptom of gender inequality and discrimination against women. In 1981, women's activists at the Feminist Encuentro in Bogota, Columbia, decided to mark November 25 as a day against violence perpetrated on women. The date was chosen because it marked the anniversary of the 1960 assassination of women political activists—three of the Mirabal sisters—under the orders of dictator Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Women's rights activists brought a proposal for a day against women's violence to the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. In December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited "governments, the relevant agencies, bodies, funds and programmes of the United Nations system, and other international organizations and non-governmental organizations, to organize on that day activities designed to raise public awareness of the problem of violence against women."

Syracuse basketball routs Bucknell with 3-point barrage - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Saturday afternoon, Syracuse simply dominated Bucknell in NIT Season Tip-Off play, leading by as many as 53 points in a 97-46 romp at the Carrier Dome. The Orange (4-1) grabbed the lead in the first minute and never slowed down as eight players scored at least six points in the game.

SU’s defense made things miserable for the Bison (2-4), permitting their guests to make just over 26 percent of their shots from the field, including only 3-of-24 attempts from three-point range. Bucknell also turned the ball over 23 times, leading to 37 Syracuse points.

Off turnovers was not the only way the Orange scored, either, as they shot over 56 percent from the floor and 48 percent from beyond the arc. SU made a season-high 14 three-pointers as both Buddy Boeheim and Elijah Hughes sizzled from deep. The two combined for 11 triples on the day.

Syracuse jumped out to a 10-3 lead as Elijah Hughes dominated the opening minutes. The redshirt junior forward hit a pair of three-pointers, dropped in another a jumper, and set up Bourama Sidibe’s dunk.

Less than four minutes later, Hughes’ third triple of the game closed a run of ten straight Orange points that had them on top, 22-7, with less than seven minutes off the clock. Hughes added another three just over three minutes later to finish a stretch of seven SU points that made it a 31-12 game before the midpoint of the opening half.

With less than four minutes to go in the opening session, Syracuse all but ended the game with an 11-1 run. Joe Girard III scored twice, including a three-point shot, then Buddy Boeheim added a three of his own. Bourama Sidibe matched a Bucknell free throw, then Jesse Edwards finished the streak with a dunk to put the Bison in a 51-22 hole. The guests scored twice before halftime to get within 25 points.

Syracuse Basketball: Carmelo Anthony finding his groove in Rip City (itlh; Queripel)

Former Syracuse basketball champion Carmelo Anthony is settling in with his new squad. Here are all the details + looking at other Orange alum in NBA.

One of the greatest Syracuse basketball players of all time made his return to the hardwood. Carmelo Anthony finds himself No.19 in NBA history among leading scorers. The prolific scoring threat made his debut for the Portland Trailblazers on Tuesday.

After moving around from OKC to Houston, Anthony was out of the NBA for an extended period, but now he calls Portland home. In Melo’s return, his squad faced off against the New Orleans Pelicans.

In his return, Carmelo had some ups and downs, but overall he was glad to be back competing at the highest level.

“It felt great to be back in the flow of the game, be back on the court, be back to where I think I belong at.”

The 10-time all-star and one-time scoring champion is back representing the Orange on the biggest stage in the world. With injuries to the Blazers starting lineup Carmelo is filling a void in their starting five.

In his second game of the year, Anthony increased his production by contributing 18 points against the Milwaukee Bucks. His plus/minus was only -1 compared to -20 in his first appearance.

ACC Roundup - Weirdness In Raleigh (DBR; King)

In Saturday’s ACC basketball, BC fell to DePaul 72-67, Syracuse dropped Bucknell 97-46, NC State beat Little Rock 74-58, FSU topped St. Francis 80-65 and Virginia took care of UMass 58-46.

Virginia actually faced a bit of adversity as Mamadi Diakite only played 21 minutes and wasn’t really a big factor. Virginia also shot just 2-14 from behind the line.

Didn't much matter. UMass shot just 15-50 as the offense was strangled by Virginia’s D.

Jay Huff and Brandon Key covered for Diakite, combining for 26 points and 15 rebounds

BC fell to DePaul, now coached by former Virginia coach Dave Leitao, but weren't that far off from winning. Nik Popovic has matured into a solid player; in this this game though he got just 24 minutes and hit for just seven points and three boards, well under his averages of nearly 15 points and seven boards.

Derryck Thornton finished with 16 but had to take 15 shots to get there.

In Syracuse, Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard combined to hit 8-12 from three point range and 34 points.

If that keeps up, Syracuse will be fun to watch.

Elijah Hughes also added 21. It wasn’t much of a challenge for Syracuse but the freshmen got to play.

On a down note, Jalen Carey is out for the year with a thumb injury.

ACC basketball power rankings: Week 2 (collegiatetimes.com; Shepard)

Non conference play continued this week. Only one team had a bad loss, and that team finds itself at the bottom of the conference.

The championship hopefuls

1. Louisville: 2-0 last week

The Cardinals continue to handle lesser competition. Jordan Nwora’s shooting is a revelation, 56% on 4.5 attempts a game, and Darius Perry is making a name for himself as one of the best playmakers in the ACC. A move into the No. 2 spot in the AP Poll was well deserved.

This week: vs. South Carolina Upstate, vs. Akron

2. Duke: 2-0 last week

Tre Jones is carrying the Blue Devils on both ends of the floor, and the three freshman starters are playing well off of him. His ability as a playmaker and defender is being compounded by a newfound aggressiveness that is leading to more scoring for the sophomore. If he keeps this up, Coach K.’s boys will be just fine.

This week: vs. Cal

3. North Carolina: 1-0 last week

Most times down the court, you know who is scoring when UNC has the ball, it’s Cole Anthony. The volume is unbelievable for the freshman, but the scoring may not be sustainable, as his inefficiencies are beginning to show. The Tar Heels’ point guards are taking 21 shots per game and only shooting at a 36% clip inside the 3-point line.

This week: vs. Elon

4. UVA: 1-0 last week

We’ve heard this story before. This team is all defense, and no offense. If the Cavaliers can’t get an offensive flow going before ACC play, their stifling ability won’t matter much against the athleticism of the conference.

This week: vs. Columbia

Good, but not great

4. Notre Dame: 2-0 last week

John Mooney is back. After scoring only 20 points through his first two games, the senior got back on track with scoring nights of 18 and 28 points. If he can keep it up, the two-way play of this team is dangerous.

This week: vs. Presbyterian, vs. Toledo

5. Syracuse: 2-0 last week

Elijah Hughes has to be more efficient. This team is a mini UVA and he is the key. The Orange has talent, but it also has a lot of young pieces. Hughes is the star, and he has to step up.

This week: vs. Cornell, vs. Bucknell

6. Georgia Tech: 1-0 last week

Michael Devoe is having fun out there. The smooth scoring sophomore is doing his thing for the Yellow Jackets, while averaging 22 points per game. Georgia Tech has a fun matchup against freshman phenomenon Anthony Edwards and the in-state rival Georgia this week.

This week: vs. Georgia

7. Florida State: 1-0 last week

The Seminoles better get their act together in the next few weeks or they’re going to struggle. They had a real scare against Western Carolina this week. The veterans on this team need to get the team in check, or a spiral is coming.

This week: vs. Chattanooga, vs. Saint Francis

A Syracuse building vandalized with teen despair may become hip-hop youth center (PS; Eisenstadt)

The old dairy building on Syracuse’s Near West Side is a message board:

RIP Jon-Jon.

Rest in Peace, Matty.

Bad vibes forever.

Kids armed with spray paint have used the massive empty building as a canvas to tell the story of their lives in their neighborhood their way. They’ve painted clusters of eyeballs, watching, and arched angles of mythological creatures, ready to fly away.
“I was looking for a building all over the city … I drove by and just slammed on the brakes,” said Hasan Stephens. “I was like, ‘This is it.’”

Stephens is working to turn the sagging, 40,000-square-foot maze of rooms on Tully Street into the Hip-Hop Center for Youth Entrepreneurship. It would be the new home of the nonprofit youth organization that he founded and runs, the Good Life Foundation. The foundation currently uses space in the South Side Innovation Center on South Salina Street.

Stephens and his staff work with the kids other programs have failed to reach – many have been in trouble so much that they seem destined for state prison. But Stephens has found a way to relate to them using hip-hop culture, business training and music. He relies on a staff of people who have walked the same path the kids are on. Stephens grew up poor and on the edge of trouble; most of his staff has been to prison.

Stephens’ idea is as massive as the building: He needs to raise $6 million for the vision he and architect Sekou Cooke share for the hip-hop youth center.
