Welcome to Cyber Monday!

Cyber Monday takes place on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and is the largest online shopping day of the year in the United States. The term was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation, while working with Scott Silverman and others, at Shop.org. In 2005, shortly before Thanksgiving, Shop.org put out a press release highlighting the growing amount of sales that took place on the day. Research from 2004 had shown that the day was the 12th largest online shopping day of the year. After the term made its debut, it has been used as a marketing tool by retailers, and the public has embraced the day. As of 2017, sales have increased each year since its inception, transforming the day from the 12th largest online shopping day, to the largest. In 2006 there were $610 million of sales on the day, and in 2016 there were $3.45 billion in sales, marking the first time online sales had passed $3 billion on a single day in the United States. Half or more of the sales from the day are from work computers, suggesting that consumers still want to do more shopping after Black Friday, want to take advantage of the days' deals, or want to hide the gifts they are buying for family members.

Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim and Dino Babers don’t have time on their side (PS; Axe)

Both Syracuse men’s basketball head coach Jim Boeheim and football coach Dino Babers need time to fix what ails their respective teams.

If it is patience that Boeheim and Babers seek, that may be a hard-to-find holiday item these days.
After Oklahoma State and Penn State pounded Boeheim’s Orange at the Barclays Center last week, Boeheim played the role of the waiter informing that your meal wasn’t quite ready to come out of the kitchen and he wasn’t sure when it would.

"I thought this team would take a while,’’ Boeheim said, “It’s going to take longer. I thought it would take 10 or 12 games. I don’t know if it will be done in 15 or 20 games.’’

Syracuse is relying on freshmen Joe Girard, Brycen Goodine and Quincy Guerrier to carry a big load and the Orange’s schedule is unforgiving. Iowa, Georgia Tech and Georgetown await as the next three opponents for the Orange. All three teams rank in the Top 75 of Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings.

Syracuse opponent preview: What to know about Iowa (DO; Alvarez)

Syracuse (4-3, 0-1 Atlantic Coast) returns to the Carrier Dome to face Iowa (5-2) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. SU lost back-to-back games in the Barclays Center to Oklahoma State and Penn State before prepping for the Hawkeyes. Iowa enters winners of four of five, recently placing second the Las Vegas Invitational.

Broadcasting nationally on ESPN2, Tuesday’s contest will be part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Here’s what to know about Iowa ahead of the matchup.

All-time series: Iowa leads, 2-1.

Last time they played: This is the first matchup between the sides since 2014. Then-No.23 Syracuse outlasted Iowa, 66-63, in the third-place game of the 2K Classic in Madison Square Garden. Chris McCullough led the Orange with 20 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. The duo of Rakeem Christmas (18 points, six rebounds) and Trevor Cooney (14 points, four assists) also played significant roles.

SU led by 15 with 12 minutes left before a barrage of Hawkeye 3-pointers closed the gap. Iowa’s Jarrod Uthoff finished with 20 points and six rebounds, including a late long ball to make it a one-possession game. The Orange forced 18 turnovers and a McCullough steal with eight seconds left iced the contest.

The Iowa report: The Hawkeyes are a top-10 team in offensive efficiency per KenPom.com. Their offense averages 82.1 points a game and three different players average at least 10 points. A majority (67.9%) of their buckets come off assists — a mark that’s seventh best in the country. In its last five games, Iowa’s most-used lineup has featured guards Connor McCaffery and Jordan Bohannon, forwards Joe Wieskamp and Cordell Pemsl and center Luka Garza. Sophomore Jack Nunge is also commonly used, giving the Hawkeyes two 6-foot-11 pillars inside.

Iowa opened its season on Nov. 8, blowing out SIU Edwardsville. Three days later, the Hawkeyes were upset at home against DePaul when they allowed 93 points. Iowa then won four-straight, including a win over Texas Tech in Las Vegas. In the tournament championship on Nov. 29, Iowa fell to San Diego State, 83-73. The Hawkeyes blew a 16-point lead and tallied just 10 field goals in the second half.

Syracuse’s Offensive Achilles Heel – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

After the program’s second straight 0-2 flop in New York City, there aren’t a whole lot of positive thoughts surrounding Syracuse basketball. The Orange are off to their worst start since the 1996-1997 season and have still yet to beat a Power 5 opponent.

Neither game at Barclays Center this past week was particularly close and SU put up one of the worst rebounding performances we’ve seen in quite some time in the loss to Penn State. Because of that abysmal showing on the boards against the Nittany Lions, a lot of the negative focus has been centered on the center position and the bigs in general.

While they deserve a decent amount of the blame, the problems aren’t entirely limited to their efforts. Keep in mind, in that game, SU still shot just 18-54 (33.3%) from the floor with the worst offenders all being wings or guards. Joe Girard (1-9), Elijah Hughes (3-11) and Buddy Boeheim (5-16) went a combined 9-36 (25%) from the floor and 5-19 (26%) from the three-point line. Naturally guard and wing shooting percentages are going to be lower based on the sheer volume and difficulty of shots they take in comparison to bigs, but those numbers are really, really bad.

Last year, the numbers were terrible because of stagnancy and a lack of ball movement in the offense along with a distinct lack of three-point shooting ability.

The latter certainly isn’t a problem this year and the movement has been much better at many junctures this year. So with relative improvements in both categories, it begs the question, what the heck is wrong with the offense? At least part of the answer: Syracuse is completely unable to score off the dribble.

In seasons past, when the offense just couldn’t get anything going like the Orange against Oklahoma State, Penn State and Virginia, they’d turn to a guy like Tyus Battle. Because Tyus was such an explosive athlete with a quality handle and excellent quickness and acceleration, he could get to the cup in the blink of an eye and at least draw a foul if not make the shot.

3 takeaways from Syracuse basketball’s 85-64 loss to Penn State - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

The Orange was routed by Penn State, 85-64, in the third place game of the NIT Season Tipoff. Afterward, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim sounded the alarm. Here are three takeaways from Syracuse’s 85-64 loss:

GUERRIER NOTCHES FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Quincy Guerrier put in the best game of his young Syracuse career against the Nittany Lions, posting his first double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in a career-high 31 minutes.

The Canadian freshman replaced an ineffective Bourama Sidibe midway through the first half after the Orange was trailing 17-7. Guerrier’s energy and rebounding was a big reason why the Orange eventually tied the game at 35 early in the second half.

“He rebounded, and he did some things well,” Boeheim said.

Guerrier was by far SU’s best rebounder, doubling up the Orange’s second rebounder, Marek Dolezaj. Syracuse gave up a 29-rebound advantage on the glass, and it’s hard to imagine what it would’ve looked like without Guerrier.

“[Coach] wants me to be physical,” Guerrier said. “Sometimes he gets mad at me because I’m not physical and I’m soft. I just have to put it in my mind to be physical and play like a dog.”

Still, Guerrier is a freshman, and the learning curve has been steep. Four times on Friday, Guerrier got caught wandering in the 2-3 zone, and surrendered four open 3-pointers to Penn State.

And while he made a more concerted effort to get inside, he also dribbled into the paint without a plan several times, finishing with three turnovers.

Syracuse native Greg Paulus earns first career victory as Division-I head coach at Niagara (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Congrats Mr Cheriehoop!

Syracuse native and former Christian Brothers Academy standout Greg Paulus earned his first career win as a Division-I head coach Sunday night, guiding the Niagara men's basketball team to victory over Norfolk State, 65-61.

After the game, Paulus was seen celebrating the win with his players in the locker room.

The Purple Eagles men's basketball program tweeted out a video of the celebration on its Twitter account Sunday night.

Paulus will lead the Purple Eagles into the Carrier Dome on Saturday, December 28 to meet the Syracuse Orange in a regular season tilt.

It will be the first time Paulus led a team up against Jim Boeheim and the Orange since landing his first gig as a Division-I head coach.

Paulus landed the job at Niagara after former coach Pat Beilein resigned from his post abruptly earlier in the fall.

ACC-Big Ten Challenge Results (DBR; Jacobs)

The ACC started it.

First there was the ACC-Big East Challenge, played in early December. The series lasted but three years before dying under the weight of coaches’ trepidation and paranoia, mostly arising from the belligerent Big East of the early 1990s.

By the end of the decade the ACC forged a lasting playing partnership with the Big Ten, a post-Thanksgiving slug-out going strong since the fall of 1999. Now most power basketball conferences have similar arrangements.

The ACC-Big Ten rivalry is so businesslike, the leagues alternate listing which name goes first. This year it’s the Big Ten that tops the ticket in games that start Monday, Dec. 2 and last through Wednesday.

Of the 16 ACC members that have competed in the Big East showdown (including Maryland through the 2013-14 season), eight have winning records and three more stand at breakeven. The Terps were winners as ACC members, but are 0-5 since.
