Welcome to International Volunteer Day!

International Volunteer Day (IVD), is an opportunity for us all to promote volunteerism, encourage governments to support volunteer efforts and recognize volunteer contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local, national and international levels.

At UNV, we are marking #IVD2019 with the theme "Volunteer for an inclusive future", highlighting SDG 10 and the pursuit of equality – including inclusion – through volunteerism.

Volunteering provides opportunities for people, particularly those often excluded, to concretely impact their own lives and play a constructive role in their communities by volunteering their time and skills. Through volunteerism, communities around the world often experience strengthened solidarity and inclusion.

How does SU avoid panicking after 3 straight losses? (PS; Waters)

When times get tough, when the shots refuse to drop and the losses mount, teams often look to their veterans for leadership.

When the younger players are experience self-doubt, they look to see how the older members of the team are handling matters.

The Syracuse Orange has lost three straight games. Its record has dropped to 4-4, which marks the Orange’s worst start to a season in over 50 years.

But who is there to turn to in the SU locker room for reassurance? Who are the wise elders?

There are no scholarship seniors; other than former walk-on Shaun Belbey who was rewarded with a scholarship this year, on SU’s roster.

Elijah Hughes, a junior and the Orange’s only returning starter off last year’s team, said he hopes to set an example for the younger players on the team. He said the players need only to look back to last season the Orange started out 2-2 and later lost at home to Buffalo and Old Dominion.

“I remember how we started last year,’’ Hughes said after SU’s 68-54 loss to Iowa on Tuesday. “It wasn’t like this, but we dug ourselves a hole and we’re going to dig ourselves out.’’

Syracuse sophomore Buddy Boeheim was on last year’s team, but he also brings some additional experience having grown up around the SU program. He pointed to Hughes and third-year guard Howard Washington as team leaders.

What's wrong with Syracuse Men's Basketball? An Inside look (cnycentral.coml; Tamurian)

For Syracuse Basketball fans, it's probably an emotion of how did the Orange get to this point and so quickly.

It's a three-game losing streak with all the losses coming by double-digits.

That said, Jim Boeheim vows his team will get better they're just not ready for these Power-5 teams yet.

Why aren't they? What needs to change to make sure they're ready? Let's take a look.

The Young Players Need To Grow Up Fast

The Final Word: Syracuse's 3rd straight loss comes at home to Iowa (DO; podcast; Alvarez & Schafer)

On Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome, Syracuse dropped its third-straight game, 68-54 to Iowa. The loss marks SU’s worst start to a season since 1970, a year in which dunking was briefly banned from the sport.

Against Iowa, Syracuse improved its previously poor rebounding but struggled to contain Iowa big man Luka Garza (23 points). SU’s leading scorer Elijah Hughes struggled, scoring 10 points on 13 field goal attempts.

Sciria: Syracuse fans need to be more patient as men's basketball team struggles (auburnpub.com; Scriria)

Remember the old saying during a losing Syracuse football season was when does basketball start? It's not so funny now as the Orange men's basketball team is off to a 4-4 start, it's worst in half a century (no Jim Boeheim was not the coach).

The 68-52 loss to Iowa on Tuesday night showed a national TV audience the Orange's offensive struggles. Syracuse's offense is having a hard time against quality opponents like Virginia, Oklahoma State, Penn State (a reach, I know) and Iowa (sorry Bucknell, you let SU score 97). I've heard some fans on social media say this is the worst team of the Boeheim era. It's still too early to make that statement but yeah, this isn't the kind of start Syracuse fans are used to and to be honest, maybe some misfortune might actually help fans understand how fortunate they've been following a team that basically averages 20 wins a season.

There are very few teams that can sustain a high level of excellence over a few years much less decades. You think about programs like Kentucky, Duke, Kansas and North Carolina that are Final Four contenders almost every year. Remember when UCLA was a powerhouse? Indiana? UNLV? Arkansas? UConn?

2019 Big Ten vs. ACC Challenge scores, results: Blowout wins help Big Ten earn bragging rights (cbssports.com; Boone)

The 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge belongs to the Big Ten. Thanks to No. 6 Ohio State's beatdown of No. 7 North Carolina, the conference earned it in convincing fashion as the Buckeyes trounced the Tar Heels by 25 and handed them their worst home loss of the Roy Williams era in the process.

While Ohio State's win was arguably the most impressive amongst the event's results from Wednesday, it wasn't the only lopsided final. No. 3 Maryland beat Notre Dame by 21, Purdue topped No. 5 Virginia by 29, Penn State clobbered Wake Forest by 22 and Georgia Tech cruised past Nebraska by 17. All told from the three-day challenge, the Big Ten got the better of the ACC by a final 8-6 tally, giving the conference its first outright win in the challenge since 2015.

ACC Roundup: Well That Sucked (DBR; King)

The ACC-Big Ten Challenge ended badly for the ACC as we thought it might. However we thought UNC and Virginia would likely win.

Here are Wednesday’s finals:

  • Maryland 72 Notre Dame 51
  • Purdue 69 Virginia 40
  • Ohio State 74 UNC 49
  • Penn State 76 Wake Forest 54
  • Georgia Tech 73 Nebraska 56
  • NC State 69 Wisconsin 54

We spotted early on that Cole Anthony was being asked to do too much offensively and he needed help.

He didn’t get it against Ohio State.

Other than Anthony’s 15, UNC only scored 34 points.

At home!

Now in fairness Armando Bacot only played seven minutes before being injured, but still. This may be the least gifted UNC team we’ve seen since Matt Doherty was busy ruining the program. It’s hard to fathom that they’re this bad right now.

But let’s just go down the list.

We didn't think it was possible for Purdue to really whip Virginia but whip they did. It was the worst loss UVA took since the legendary UMBC upset.

Relive the 10 most impactful Syracuse sports moments of the decade (DO; Staff)

In the last 10 years, SU hired its first black football head coach, made three combined Final Fours between the men’s and women’s basketball teams and won the school’s first-ever national championship by a women’s team.

There have been highs — upsetting No. 2 Clemson in the Carrier Dome — and lows, like Boeheim’s 101 vacated wins due to NCAA-imposed sanctions.

As the decade comes to an end, relive Syracuse athletics’ 10 most impactful stories, written by the reporters who covered them in the moment, in chronological order.

2011: Associate head coach Bernie Fine fired amid sexual abuse allegations

This was certainly the most enthralling storyline during my years at The Daily Orange. There were often times when sports bled into news and garnered the attention of the public at-large, like Syracuse’s decision to leave the Big East for the ACC, but nothing quite compared to the Bernie Fine saga — especially on the heels of everything happening at Penn State. Our staff of writers and editors worked tirelessly to explore every angle of the story during what was supposed to be our Thanksgiving break.

For some, this represented a first experience with cold calls and knocking on doors in homage to the grassroots of journalism. For others, this was a chance to lead the younger staff members through arguably the strongest learning experience of their careers. In the subsequent weeks, The Daily Orange broke several stories related to Fine as our reporting was thrust into national relevancy. There were television appearances on CNN and HLN, a trip to Maine to visit accuser Zach Tomaselli and a meeting with the county’s district attorney for an exclusive story in which The Daily Orange heard audio of police interviews previously withheld from reporters. Those were the moments that reinforced our journalistic prowess during the days we’ll never forget.

2011: Syracuse joins the Atlantic Coast Conference

In September of 2011, the Orange saw a whole lot of green and announced the university was leaving its longtime home in the Big East for the more stable ACC.

The move – with Pittsburgh making the same jump – was part of a major realignment in college sports, as schools sought conferences with lucrative TV deals capable of bolstering finances for years to come.

The ACC had that. In 2010, the conference signed a 12-year deal with ESPN worth $1.86 billion, an agreement that was later extended in length and value with the addition of SU and Pitt.
