Welcome to National App Day!

Chances are high that you have a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch, and that means you likely use apps on a daily basis as well. An "app" is short for "software application," which is a type of computer program. Today an app usually refers to those used on mobile devices, but it initially referred to those on desktop computers as well. Apps became common on cell phones after phones were equipped with internet capability, touchscreens, and processing chips. They gained prominence with the release of Apple's iPhone in 2007. The Apple OS 2.0, released in 2008, had about 500 apps. The American Dialect Society made "app" their word of the year in 2010, and the popularity of apps continued to increase during the following years. Today there are about 2 million apps on the Android and Apple platforms, and thousands of new apps come out every day. Apps have changed how we live, transforming work and leisure. New jobs and companies have stemmed from them, and they have shifted culture and promoted creativity and innovation. They are celebrated today because of their importance in this regard.

SU News

An old rivalry with a new golden era- The last four 'Cuse vs. Hoyas games are classics (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

Syracuse and Georgetown Basketball.

To anyone who follows college basketball, nothing else needs to be said.

Of course, the visions of the 1980's come to mind, the rough and tumble Big East games were incredible and the centerpiece of the ESPN 30 for 30 film "Requiem for the Big East"

But what if I told you, the rivalry is in a renaissance right now?

After what was thought to be the last game between the schools in the 2013 Big East Tournament, a game Syracuse won in overtime, the schools signed on for a four-game series which has since been extended.

With the 5th game between the schools since the Orange's departure for the ACC coming up on Saturday it's a good time to reflect on the last four games since December of 2015 which have all been quite entertaining in their own right.

SU-Georgetown hasn’t reached its expiration date yet (PS; Axe)

Hello Hoya Saxa, my old friend. I see you’ve come to play basketball again.

The Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry will renew for the 95th time on Saturday at the Capitol One Arena in Washington, D.C.

For all the fans of younger generations who roll their eyes and say “OK, boomer” at the thought of this series continuing, get your head out of Tik Tok for a minute and look around.

The fire burns on between the Orange and Hoyas based on what has happened in recent times, not purely on the memories of when Patrick Ewing played in this series instead of coached in it.

In the four games Syracuse and Georgetown have played since the Orange left the Big East, no game has been decided by more than seven points.

Tyus Battle sunk Georgetown’s battleship with a jumper with less than three seconds left to give the Orange a 72-71 victory in 2018.

Is Syracuse the Youngest Team in the ACC? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Gross)

Even after quality blowout victories, Jim Boeheim continues to harp on how young this SU team is. College sports often work in cycles. Bad teams are young, good teams are experienced. Once a few years go by and players graduate, the roles are reversed. The team that was young is suddenly seasoned and ready to win.

Where does Syracuse fit into this equation? For the sake of a 4-5 start, Orange fans hope the team is comparatively young. I ran the numbers.

There’s no use in calculating the average experience for entire rosters. Most teams play about seven players prominently, so I kept it to the top-7 in average minutes played. Redshirt years do not count as experience. The minimum a team could get is a 1.00, if every player was a freshman. The max would be 5.00, if every player was a graduate student.

This is the ACC in order of average class standing.

TeamAverage Experience
Louisville (9-0)3.71
Notre Dame (6-3)3.29
Wake Forest (5-5)3.29
North Carolina (6-3)3.00
Boston College (5-5)2.86
NC State (7-2)2.86
Virginia (8-1)2.71
Clemson (5-4)2.71
Pittsburgh (4-2)2.57
Miami (5-3)2.57
Florida State (8-2)2.29
Georgia Tech (4-3)2.14
Syracuse (5-4)2.00
Duke (8-1)1.86
Virginia Tech (6-3)1.71

This table legitimizes Coach Boeheim’s early-season sentiment, that the team is far too young to enjoy success against top teams. Only two teams are younger than the Orange. Virginia Tech had a massive senior exodus last season. Duke is traditionally the youngest team in the conference, with a high rate of one-and-dones.

This is Louisville’s year. Their entire roster is comprised of upperclassmen and it’s looking like the best team in conference. For Syracuse, expect things to get better before they get worse.

ACC Basketball Power Rankings: Where does Syracuse land after its wild week? (PS; Carlson)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team endured a wild week last week. The Orange lost at home to Iowa, a third straight defeat by double-digits. Then Syracuse drubbed a defensively-decent Georgia Tech team by 34 on the road, showcasing a seldom-reached ceiling.

What do you make of a team with two performances that different?

Syracuse’s up-and-down week came in a relatively down one for the ACC, which lost the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, 8-6.

Those performances should make it a little tougher than usual for the ACC to stuff the NCAA Tournament bracket with teams and make qualifying a little more challenging for the league’s middle class this year.

For this week, it also makes it extremely difficult to gauge the league outside of its top two teams.

Here’s a try.

Nice piece in the Athletic about Trevor Cooney and the work he’s doing to honor a friend who committed suicide.

When Cooney joined the foundation last year, he proposed a basketball tournament in which some of Delaware’s best high school teams compete and raise awareness for mental health. “No one really wants to talk about this at the dinner table or with friends,” he says. “The approach by using sports is that everyone enjoys sports. So my thought was, hey, can we use basketball to talk about it and be more comfortable discussing it?”
