Welcome to Sacagawea Day!

Sacagawea (also spelled Sacajawea and Sakakawea) is believed to have died on today's date in 1812, and today we honor her contributions and courage. The daughter of a Shoshone chief, and part of the Lemhi band of the Shoshone tribe, she was born in May 1788 in the Lemhi Valley, near the Salmon River and the Rocky Mountains, in present-day Lemhi County, Idaho.

The Hidatsa tribe was enemies of the Shoshones, and they kidnapped Sacagawea in 1800 and brought to a Hidatsa-Mandan settlement in North Dakota. In 1803 or 1804, she became the property of fur trader Toussaint Charbonneau, who took her as one of his wives. Sacagawea's name means "bird woman" in the Hidatsa language—"sacaga" means bird and "wea" means woman. But, the Shoshone and some others claim that her name means "boat pusher" in the Shoshone language.

SU News

See our Syracuse basketball All-Decade Team (PS; Ditota)

It’s time to reveal our Syracuse basketball All-Decade Team.

Our voting panel consisted of Chris Carlson, Donna Ditota and Mike Waters.

There wasn’t a whole lot of debate about these teams, though we did engage in some back-and-forth about a few guys — namely Dion Waiters and Jerami Grant. Both players turned out to be NBA talents, but their numbers at Syracuse were not as sparkling as some of the other guys we chose.

Grant, so full of potential at SU, has built his body, vastly improved his shooting stroke and has gone on to have a solid pro career. Waiters, so mercurial at SU, has been ... so mercurial as an NBA player.

Tyus Battle was an amazing scorer at Syracuse. Truly amazing what he achieved in three seasons. But Brandon Triche did more things (rebounds, assists) and his teams won more games, hence he is on our first team.

How Boeheim’s Behavior is Impacting Syracuse – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

It’s no secret Jim Boeheim isn’t the happy-go-lucky type. He’s not the type to keep his cool when a ref makes a bad call. He’s not the type to even smile that much. Boeheim doesn’t seem like he’s that happy of a person, whether it be on the court, talking to the media, or in everyday life. The only time you’ll see a smile on his face is when he is in a commercial and that’s only because he’s getting paid.

This year, in his 44th season, Boeheim seems even more grouchy.

Boeheim: I thought this team would take 10-12 games. It will take longer. 15-20 games maybe. We don’t have a lot to look forward to.
— Orange Fizz (@OrangeFizz) November 30, 2019
With a young, inexperienced team there have been problems. A rocky 6-5 start is one of the worst in his tenure and he’s not happy with it, which can be expected. But instead of coaching through the issues, he is throwing around blame. First it started with how they scheduled games.
Boeheim: You never want to play the elite games early. It's stupid. It's a money grab. It makes no sense to me.
— Orange Fizz (@OrangeFizz) November 7, 2019
Then Boeheim moved on to blame the players.

Most recently, the head man has called out the Syracuse fans.

Boeheim: I had to cheer to get the crowd going. It's sickening that we can't get some help here.
— Orange Fizz (@OrangeFizz) December 19, 2019
Boeheim said the crowd participation during SU’s game against Oakland this week was ‘sickening.’ The comment sent waves through the Syracuse community and caused an uproar. Much of the Orange faithful were mad and hurt from what the coach said.

5-star 2022 guard Dior Johnson to visit SU basketball (PS; Burrows)

Five-star guard Dior Johnson will visit Syracuse basketball later this season when the Orange plays Duke on Feb. 1.

Jake Weingarten of Stock Risers was the first to report Johnson’s visit with the Orange.

Five-star Dior Johnson was phenomenal last night. Nearly had a triple-double, was proving why he’s one of the nation’s top guards. His court vision, ball handling, scoring... exceptional.

He told @Stockrisers that he will visit Syracuse on February 1st, they play Duke.
— Jake (@jakeweingarten) December 19, 2019
Johnson, a Class of 2022 guard from Saugerties, N.Y., currently plays for Mayfair High School in Lakewood, Calif.

The 6-foot-3 guard originally scheduled a visit with the Orange in September, but the visit was canceled due to a scheduling conflict.

Johnson is currently ranked as the No. 6 overall prospect for 2022 by 247 Sports and No. 21 by ESPN.

Here’s more from 247′s Josh Gershon on Johnson’s game:

Good size and length to go with sturdy frame that should carry plenty of strength. Impressive skill set given athletic ability. Has handle and vision to play on the ball, while he is an efficient enough shooter/scorer to play off it. Will be able to guard the one and two at next level. Talent-wise he is a no-brainer elite prospect at this stage.

ACC Basketball Power Rankings: Week 6 (fromtherumbleseat.com; Sisbarro)

The writers from From the Rumble Seat continue a weekly series for ACC power rankings. The following rankings are based on games through Sunday 12/15.

1. Duke Blue Devils (9-1, 1-0)

AP Rank: 4
Kenpom: 2
Last Week Power Rank: 2

This wasn’t an easy choice. After the Louisville loss, Duke and UL are neck and neck, but I give the resume edge to the Blue Devils as they have several quality wins. Duke was off this week, but took the #1 spot for the first time this season because of wins over Kansas (newly minted AP #1), Georgetown, and Michigan St. The Blue Devils will play Wofford at home this week, a team that just upset North Carolina.

Last Week:
None

This Week:
12/19 vs Wofford

2. Louisville Cardinals (10-1, 2-0)

AP Rank: 3
Kenpom: 3
Last Week Power Rank: 1

We aren’t even two months through the season, but we are quickly finding out that nobody’s safe this season. Just ask Louisville. They were handed their first defeat of the season in at the Jimmy V Classic against Texas Tech, a team that had lost 3 straight to unranked teams. It all went wrong on the same day for UL. They were outrebounded, turned the ball over 19 times, weren’t moving the ball on offense, shot 18% from 3, and shot 34% from the field. On top of that their best player, Jordan Nwora, was 4 for 16 from the field. The Cardinals were able to bounce back over the weekend with a win over Eastern Kentucky. Nwora had 26 points on 10 for 14 shooting, but even more impressive was shooting 96% from the FT line as a team (22 for 23). Louisville will host Miami (OH) this week as they look to regain their #1 ranking.

Last Week:
Loss 12/10 vs Texas Tech* 57-70
Win 12/14 vs Eastern Kentucky 99-67

This Week:
12/18 vs Miami (OH)

3. Virginia Cavaliers (8-1, 2-0)

AP Rank: 9
Kenpom: 9
Last Week Power Rank: 3

Virginia stays put at #3 this week as they were one of the many teams that did not play last week. More importantly for the Wahoos, Braxton Key appears to be closing in on a return. He had his stitches taken out of his surgically repaired wrist on December 10th and could play as early Virginia’s next game. Virginia has two home games this week against Stony Brook and South Carolina, and it seems likely that Key will be available in at least one of them. This would certainly provide the Cavaliers with a much needed jolt offensively.

Last Week:
None

This Week:
12/18 vs Stony Brook
12/22 vs South Carolina

4. Florida St Seminoles (8-2, 1-1)

AP Rank: 19
Kenpom: 16
Last Week Power Rank: 4

No movement at the 4 spot as there were just not enough games played by teams in the top half for the Seminoles to move up or down. The Noles were off last week and will play two home games this week against in state teams. Florida St will host both North Florida and South Florida as they continue their quest to beat every team in the state.

Last Week:
None

This Week:
12/17 vs North Florida
12/21 vs South Florida
...
...
11. Syracuse Orange (5-5, 1-1)

AP Rank: N/A
Kenpom: 54
Last Week Power Rank: 9

Syracuse continued their red hot shooting, but fell short by 10 points to Georgetown on the road. Buddy Boeheim lit up the scoreboard with 25 points on 7 for 13 from 3 point range. Elijah Hughes also contributed 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists. As a team, the Orange shot 48% and 44% from 3, but it was the defense and rebounding that did them in. Syracuse was out-rebounded by 11 and gave up 14 offensive rebounds. The Orange also gave up 89 points with 24 of them coming from the charity stripe. Syracuse has 2 games this week against Oakland and North Florida as they look to push their record above .500 again.

Last Week:
Loss 12/14 at Georgetown 79-89

This Week:
11/18 vs Oakland
11/21 vs North Florida

Central NY to get $86M from state to support 93 projects (PS; Moriarty)

Central will receive $86.2 million in funding to support 93 economic and community development projects in 2020.

The funding is among $761 million in grants and tax credits Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday as part of the ninth round of his Regional Economic Development Council initiative. The initiative awards funding on a competitive basis to 10 regions around the state each year.

Central New York received the third greatest amount among the 10 regions this year, topped only by the $88.9 million the Southern Tier received for 109 projects and the $87.9 million Long Island was awarded for 94 projects.

Among the projects for which Central New York received funding:

  • Cayuga Milk Ingredients LLC - Cayuga Milk Ingredients (CMI) will receive $5 million from Empire State Development as part of an overall investment of approximately $89 million to install an evaporator and feed system and an ultra-high temperature/aseptic bottling line at its plant near Auburn. With this investment, CMI, a manufacturer of high quality, infant-grade milk ingredients, will increase output by 20% and increase sales of high value milk powders around the globe.
  • Tessy Plastics Expansion Project - Tessy Plastics Corp. will receive $5 million to redevelop one of its existing facilities in Central New York, allowing it to expand the number and type of products it manufactures. The project will include the creation of a controlled environment clean room, improvements to building mechanicals and utilities, upgrades to exterior areas including loading docks and parking lots, and other building improvements as needed, such as warehouse space or office space.
  • ACCESS Dental Laboratories - ACCESS Global Enterprises LLC will receive $430,000 to renovate a property at 1081 S. Salina St. in Syracuse into a light manufacturing facility and a day care center. The project includes building renovations and the purchase and installation of production machinery and equipment.
While the state’s funding is good news for Cayuga Milk, President Trump’s trade war with China has put the company’s expansion in doubt. The company told Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard in October that it was forced to put the project on hold because of tariffs imposed on American goods by China in retaliation for tariffs Trump has imposed on Chinese exports to the United States.

Tessy is considering making a $20 million investment in one of its four Central New York locations -- and adding 50 jobs in the process.

Tessy, which already employs 1,013 in the region, is looking at making the investment in existing space at its facilities in Elbridge, Van Buren or Auburn, according to company President Roland Beck.
