Welcome to Festival of Sleep Day!

Festival of Sleep Day celebrates all types of sleep. It is a day for sleeping in, taking naps, or not even getting out of bed in the first place. After all, it is a festival, so it should be celebrated to the fullest. It likely happens when it does because the holidays have just ended, and people never seem to get enough sleep during them. This makes it an ideal time for catching up on sleep, especially because some students aren't even back in school yet, and some workers are still on vacation.

Sleep is just as important as diet and exercise for maintaining health. Among its many benefits, it allows the body to rest, recharge, and heal, and it helps with memory function. It should take a person about ten to fifteen minutes to fall asleep; those who take less than five minutes to snooze may be sleep deprived. Exercising can help those who have a hard time falling asleep, and it will improve their sleep quality as well.

SU basketball vs. Notre Dame: What to know (PS; Waters)

As a new year dawns, the 2019-20 season continues for the Syracuse Orange this Saturday.

Syracuse returns to ACC play with a game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse and Notre Dame took relatively similar paths to the start of full-time conference play. Syracuse (8-5 overall, 1-1 ACC) beat the teams it was expected to beat, but only went 1-4 against major conference opponents.

The Orange’s most impressive win was a 97-63 knockout of Georgia Tech in early December.

Notre Dame (9-4, 0-2) did much the same with its best win coming against struggling UCLA. The Irish dropped games against North Carolina, Boston College, Maryland and Indiana.

The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start and will be televised on ESPNU.

Here are 10 key things to know:

The historical significance

This will be the 51st game between Syracuse and Notre Dame, dating back to the first meeting on Feb. 12, 1914 at SU’s old Archbold Gym. Syracuse holds a 29-21 edge in the series.

Notre Dame and Syracuse have met an independents and as members of the Big East and Atlantic Coast conferences.

This is Notre Dame’s first trip to the Carrier Dome since beating the Orange 51-49 on Jan. 6, 2018. The Irish stunned the Orange with a late steal leading to Rex Pfleuger’s tip-in at the buzzer.

A Three Party

Saturday’s game could come down to the simple factor of which teams makes more 3-point shots because both teams figure to take a lot of shots from 3-point range.

Syracuse relies on the 3-pointer as much as any team in the country. Of the Orange’s field goal attempts, 47.9 percent come from outside the 3-point arc. That is the highest percentage of any major conference team.

Three keys as Syracuse welcomes Notre Dame to the Dome (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

Syracuse Men's Basketball re-ignites its ACC schedule Saturday when the Orange takes on Notre Dame at the Carrier Dome (4:00 p.m./ESPN2) For a Syracuse team that absolutely needs all the wins it can get, this is a crucial test even if it's the first in 2020.

In "The Orange Zone" Syracuse Associate Head Coach Adrian Autry showed me what Notre Dame does well offensively.

In short, they're a dangerous team.

The Irish, like the Orange, love to shoot it from the outside. Both squads ranking in the top-five nationally in three-pointers as part of the offense.

Unlike the Orange, Notre Dame features a big man inside that can get the job done every night and four core players returning.

Let's take a look at the keys for Syracuse to try and win the first game of 2020 at home.

Somehow, Some Way, Slow Down the Irish's Core Four

John Mooney, Prentiss Hubb, T.J. Gibbs and Rex Pflueger.

Syracuse vs. Notre Dame: Previewing the Fighting Irish - Pickin' Splinters (pickinsplinters.com; Heyen)

Syracuse (8-5, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) welcomes Notre Dame (9-4, 0-2) to the Carrier Dome on Saturday to resume ACC play in the new year. The Orange concluded nonconference play with a 14-point home win over Niagara, while the Fighting Irish beat Alabama A&M by 26 on Dec. 29. Two teams that could be fighting for the ACC’s final NCAA Tournament spot will look to pick up a momentum-building win Saturday.

Here’s a preview of what the Fighting Irish will bring to the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon.

How to watch Syracuse vs. Notre Dame

Syracuse and Notre Dame tip off at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

All-time record

Syracuse leads the all-time series, 29-21. SU opened the series with a 50-14 win in 1914. Since Mike Brey became the Fighting Irish head coach, Syracuse is 17-8 against Notre Dame.

Last time they played

Syracuse played its first game of 2019 in South Bend, Indiana on Jan. 5, 2019. The Orange came away with a 72-62 win. SU was led by 22 points from Elijah Hughes, who got help from 19 Oshae Brissett points and 17 Tyus Battle points.

For Notre Dame, two of this year’s seniors scored in double figures in the meeting a year ago. TJ Gibbs dropped 18 points, while John Mooney added 14.

How Syracuse beats Notre Dame

Syracuse’s best chance of beating Notre Dame will center around the two seniors mentioned above, Gibbs and Mooney. The Orange will have to slow at least one down to hold the advantage.

Gibbs will hurt SU from beyond the arc as a zone stretcher. Gibbs hit four 3-pointers in the first half in South Bend a year ago, so Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard III will need to be aware of Gibbs’ whereabouts at all times. Mooney is the type of glass-attacking big guy with mid-range touch that gave the Orange trouble during nonconference play. Bourama Sidibe will need to stay out of foul trouble while preventing Mooney from easy looks from the foul-line area.

In addition, Notre Dame’s offense does one thing better than any team in the country: Protect the basketball. UND’s turnover percentage of 13.6 percent is the lowest in the nation, per KenPom. If the Orange zone can force more mistakes out of the Fighting Irish than usual, SU stands a solid chance of winning.

Syracuse Orange v. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Predictions (1/4/20) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

Syracuse will try to open 2020 with a win (4:00 p.m. ET / ESPN2) on Saturday at the Carrier Dome against Notre Dame. Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Saugat Sen and Wes Cheng give their predictions below.

SAUGAT SEN: Notre Dame comes into Saturday’s contest having won three of their last four, with the one loss coming in a 62-60 loss to Indiana in the Crossroads Classic in December.

In that game, Armaan Franklin drained a 3-pointer with 15.7 seconds left in a comeback win for the Hoosiers.
The Orange and the Irish are statistically similar, but the Irish pull down five more boards on average. John Mooney is a big reason for that, as he averaging a double double this season. The Orange big men are going to have their hands full against him, who is leading the NCAA in rebounds at 13.5 per game.

Expect this one to be close, but the Irish tend to change up their defense often enough to throw off the Syracuse shooters. The Orange will continue to struggle to grab rebounds, and if the shots are not falling, this will get away quickly. I expect Mooney to have a big game and the Irish win this one 82-71.

ACC Basketball power rankings: Duke ahead of pack as conference play starts (bustingbrackets.com; Walton)

Louisville suffered a nail-biting true road loss to Kentucky but outside of that, it has been a strong stretch for the top four teams in ACC Basketball.

The ACC is still as strong as ever and as we enter the true start of conference play, there are lots of intriguing storylines that will unfold over the next several weeks. Right now ACC Basketball has five teams ranked in the top-40 in KenPom (No. 2 Duke, No. 7 Louisville, No. 18 Florida State, and the unranked NC State ) and North Carolina, at 47th in KenPom, has a chance to be a fast riser if and when stellar freshman Cole Anthony returns to the court.

We know what the big dogs of the conference will be up to as we start conference play. Teams like Duke and Virginia will be looking to stay the course and avoid upsets to feisty ACC foes like Boston College and Virginia Tech.

Louisville and Florida State will also be going head-to-head this week in a game that will represent the first instance of the conference beating up on itself, as one of those two ranked teams will likely take brief tumble in the polls following a loss, despite it being a “good” loss in the grand scheme of things.

The bottom half of the conference is looking as competitive as ever, with teams like Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Syracuse having win streaks of at least three games. In fact, seven teams in the 15-team ACC are on win streaks of at least three games, yet another way you can see just how strong the ACC is looking as they try for another seven (or more) bid season.

ACC Basketball Notebook: Tre Jones returns to court, Matthew Hurt shines (bustingbrackets.com; Benjamin)

The Duke Blue Devils remained undefeated during ACC Basketball play as Tre Jones returned to the court, and Matthew Hurt turned in his best performance of his young career.

Tre Jones handed out 10 assists, marking the third time this season he has reached double-digit in assists, while Matthew Hurt scored 20 of his career-high 25 points in the first half as the second-ranked Duke Blue Devils rolled over the Boston College Eagles 88-49 on Tuesday. Jones, who sat out the previous two games with an injury, was a little rusty shooting ball, but he did an excellent job running the offense as the Blue Devils racked up 20 dimes on 35 field goals, including a season-high 12 3-pointers, as they shot 51.5% from the field overall.

It marked the third time this season that Duke has finished with at least 20 assists and the seventh occasion that the Blue Devils shot above 50% from the field. The 6-3 sophomore point guard finished with five points as he was 2-for-8 from the field and 1-for-3 from beyond the arc. Jones also grabbed five rebounds and only turned the ball over once.

While it was nice to see Jones back in the lineup, perhaps the most significant breakthrough was Hurt’s performance. Hurt came into the season as one of the most heralded freshmen, but he has been inconsistent. However, the 6-9 freshman knocked down 10 of 16 shots from the field against BC, including five of 10 from long-distance, both of which were season-bests. Hurt has reached double-figures in five of his last seven contests and has made at least 50% of his shots 10 times this season. He ranks 20th in the ACC in 3-pointers made (20), ninth in true shooting percentage (59.7%), and 14th in offensive rebounding percentage (9.4%).

Spotted in Upstate NY: A look back at celebrity sightings of 2019 (PS; Hernandez)

A rotating spot of famous faces at Syracuse games, small town movie sets, Weird Al on Maid of the Mist, and fake weed are just some of the things 2019 brought us when celebrities came to town. Across Upstate NY famous actors, comedians, singers, and more were seen everywhere from small town diners, to frat parties, high schools, attending sports games and everything in between.
Who did you see in 2019?

BROOK BURKE
Former Playboy model and “Dancing With the Stars” winner Brooke Burke was local businessman Adam Weitsman’s first of two celebrities spotted with him at Syracuse basketball games in February. Burke is currently set to launch a podcast on Jan. 6 entitled “Intimate Knowledge” with “Real Housewives” star Meghan King Edmonds.

Thanks to my good friend Brooke for flying from Cali yesterday to watch the Orange play at the dome with Clover and I. Best time with the best of people. ️#BrookeBurke #GoOrange

ROB GRONKOWSKI
There have been more than a couple of celebrity sightings this year at Syracuse basketball games. In February, NFL star Rob Gronkowski accompanied local businessman Adam Weitsman.

Weitsman told syracuse.com at the time that he became friends with Rob Gronkowski’s father, Gordie, who is a former Syracuse football player and raised his family in Buffalo. The visit came shortly after Gronkowski won his third Super Bowl with the New England Patriots.

Gronkowski, commonly known as Gronk, announced his retirement from the NFL in March and has since been back in Buffalo giving back to the community and talking about his recovery from his NFL career with the help of CBD oils.

JOHN KRASINSKI AND EMILY BLUNT

When production for “A Quiet Place 2″ got rolling in Western NY, so did the reports of celebrity spots including actor, writer, and director John Krasinski and his wife Emily Blunt. The sequel to “A Quiet Place” was written by Krasinski and stars Blunt, who won a Screen Actors Guild Award for best supporting actress for her role in the movie.

It’s very real!!
— Kellie (@KellieMckinnen) April 24, 2019

The original movie was filmed in 2017 throughout Upstate New York, shooting scenes in Little Falls (near Utica), Pawling, New Paltz and Beacon. The sequel shot at several locations in Akron, NY., about 40 minutes east of Buffalo. Most of the shooting took place in Akron, but filming also included 10 days in Chautauqua County, two days in Dutchess County and one day in Ulster County.
