Welcome to Three Kings Day!

Epiphany is a Christian feast day celebrating God coming into the flesh as Jesus Christ. It is celebrated differently in Western and Eastern churches, and there are various customs around the world. The word "epiphany" comes from a Greek word meaning "to appear." Epiphany may have originated in the eastern half of the Roman Empire as a feast to honor Jesus' baptism, and then expanded to include a celebration of his birth, the visit of the Magi, and the events of Jesus' childhood. The day began being celebrated in the latter half of the fourth century.

In Western churches the day commemorates the visit of the Magi—the day that Jesus was revealed to Gentiles. In some Western denominations, Epiphany starts the liturgical season of Epiphanytide, and the night before is many times celebrated as Twelfth Night.

How Many ACC Wins Can Syracuse Really Get? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

A blowout to Virginia on opening night, a convincing resurgence against Georgia Tech, and a last second meltdown while hosting Notre Dame. That is how Syracuse’s ACC games have gone so far. Sad, happy, sad. The non-conference play was pretty much the same, but against worse competition. With only ACC teams left on SU’s schedule, it’s not going to get any easier.

Let’s be quite frank, Syracuse isn’t that good this season, to put it simply. The Orange don’t have the talent, experience, or offense to be a dominant team. When you put them in the best basketball conference in the country, it is even harder to be positive about this team. So, let’s take a look at the remainder of SU’s ACC slate and see how many games they can actually come out on top of.

vs. Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech isn’t as dominant as it has been in past years, but it is a team that took down a very talented Michigan State squad earlier in the season and has way more offensive firepower than Syracuse. The Dome usually gives SU a couple points, but it won’t be enough. Syracuse will lose this game.

at Virginia

We already know how the first meeting between these two teams went down and the second time won’t be any different. Syracuse will lose this game.

It's 2016-17 all over again for Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Three years ago, the Syracuse basketball team stumbled through a rough season, backing a trip to the Final Four with a relatively brief cameo in the NIT. Their appearance in the lesser of the two major college basketball tournaments followed Jim Boeheim’s public comments about how the ACC Tournament should no longer play in Greensboro because there was “no value added” in playing there when it could be in a much more metropolitan locale.

In a “twist of fate”, the Orange ended up welcoming UNC-Greensboro to the Carrier Dome for the first round of the NIT. The two squads ended up playing a day later than originally scheduled due to a snowstorm and SU advanced, 90-77, the game living on only in the memories of fans as a sort of punch line.

Well, what’s not so funny now is the 2019-2020 Syracuse team’s similarities to their counterparts from three years prior.

On the heels of their 88-87 loss on Saturday to Notre Dame, SU currently stands at #62 in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings with rankings of #32 in adjusted offensive efficiency and #106 in adjusted defensive deficiency. Their 2016-2017 brethren wrapped that season #55 overall, #30 on offense, and #119 on defense.

With 17 ACC games remaining, it is not hard to envision this group sliding even more, both overall and on defense.

Syracuse Basketball: Quincy Guerrier ‘has earned more playing time’ (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball suffered a loss vs Notre Dame, but Quincy Guerrier had one of his best games. Here’s why that has earned him more playing time.

Syracuse basketball dropped an important conference game vs Notre Dame on Saturday and on top of that their depth is depleted due to injury.

Although it’s not all bad on the hill, freshman forward Quincy Guerrier is continuing to come into his own as he gains invaluable experience.

“Quincy did a really good job coming in and got on the boards. Guerrier has earned some more playing time. He’s been good in practice so we’ll be seeing more of him.” – head coach Jim Boeheim after the Notre Dame game.

NCAA Basketball: ACC struggles, Gonzaga dropping, and more takeaways (bustingbrackets.com; Rauf)

Here are the biggest takeaways from the past week in NCAA basketball, including a look at the ACC’s struggles, Gonzaga’s potential drop, and much more.

Another week of NCAA Basketball, another week of crazy upsets and not knowing what next week’s rankings are going to look like. Five top 10 teams lost over the course of the last three days, four of which came against unranked opponents.

Oregon lost to Colorado, Ohio State was ousted by Wisconsin, Memphis had their win streak snapped by Georgia, Villanova was blasted by Marquette, and Louisville was handled at home by Florida State.

One of the teams that didn’t lose was the nation’s top-ranked team in Gonzaga, but that doesn’t mean the Zags won’t drop when Monday’s rankings are released. Here are the top takeaways from the week in a new Rauf Report, starting with why Gonzaga shouldn’t be No. 1 this coming week.

1) Expect Gonzaga to drop from No. 1

Gonzaga became the sixth team this season to own the No. 1 spot a couple of weeks ago and, while they haven’t lost since jumping to that spot, they deserve to fall a few spots.

The Zags struggled opened West Coast Conference play this week and struggled mightily with both Portland and Pepperdine, who are 9-8 and 7-9, respectively, on the season.

Technical Tidbits 01/06: Men’s Basketball Team Gets Big ACC Win (fromtherumbleseat.com; Mura)

Of course, you have heard of the news by now regarding Tech’s last basketball game. Over the weekend, Tech defeated UNC 96-83. This was an impressive win by the Yellow Jackets men’s basketball team for several reasons. Here are a few key points from the article:
  • The Yellow Jackets started the game quickly with a 27-4 lead
  • Tech has won three of the last five since Jose Alvarado’s return
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 59% on the night
Alvarado had a terrific game as did Moses Wright. The Yellow Jackets are now 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. Let’s hope this win can give them some momentum. They’ve got a big game ahead of them. They are hosting the #2 ranked Duke Blue Devils on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 9:00 PM. #GoJackets.
INCREDIBLE TEAM WIN

Yellow Jackets Fall at Wake Forest, 65-60

Despite four Yellow Jackets finishing in double figures, the women’s basketball team lost to Wake Forest yesterday 65-60. Despite trailing at half time, the Yellow Jackets did manage to get the lead in the second half after a quick start. It was poor shooting though that likely cost them the game. They shot only 39.3 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line. On Thursday, the Yellow Jackets will be on the road to face off against 8th ranked FSU. Tip-off from Tallahassee is set for 7:00 PM and the game will be on ACC Network Extra.

ACC Roundup - A Post Holiday Quiet Period (DBR; King)

Okay, first thing: who’s designing the schedule?

We can see taking New Year’s Day off, barring some sort of tournament. And the day after? Okay, fine.

But there are no games on Jan 3rd, 5th or 6th either. So nothing on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th — but seven games on the 4th?

There’s bound to be a reason for that but we can’t think of one. And when you have a brand new network, why in the world wouldn’t you spread those games out and feature some individually on days where there’s nothing else going on?

We could see it next weekend when the college football championship is on Monday. There are games Saturday and Sunday and of course none Monday. But Thursday and Friday there’s no basketball content for the ACC Network. Maybe it’s just us but it doesn’t make sense.

So no games until Tuesday which is just dumb. It’s called content, ACC. C-O-N-T-E-N-T!

Remember when State signed Markell Johnson to back up Dennis Smith? Well he’s had a pretty solid career all in all, certainly better than Smith’s turned out to be, but State’s challenge now is to get as much as they can out of their talented point guard.

With Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy and De’Andre Hunter all in the NBA now, Virginia’s offense has been spotty at best. Against Virginia Tech though it was pretty good and with Braxton Key’s wrist getting better, and a bit of outside shooting developing, the Cavs are improving at the right time.

Lady Antebellum to play St. Joe’s Amp during NYS Fair (PS; Herbert)

Lady Antebellum is returning to Syracuse this summer.

The Grammy-winning country trio announced their 2020 tour dates Friday, including three Upstate New York concerts: July 16 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Sept. 5 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs, and Sept. 6 at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse.

Fellow country artists Jake Owen and Maddie & Tae will open all three shows.

Ticket prices and individual on-sale dates have not been announced. Select concerts will go on sale Jan. 24 as part of Live Nation’s Country Megaticket at megaticket.com.

It’s the fourth concert announced at the St. Joe’s Amp for the 2020 season, along with Thomas Rhett with Cole Swindell and Hardy (June 11); The Doobie Brothers with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (July 5); and Kenny Chesney (Aug. 20).

Lady Antebellum’s concert will occur during the 2020 New York State Fair. Tickets for Amp concerts during the fair can be used for free admission to the NYS Fair.

The country group, comprised of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood, released their eighth album, “Ocean,” in November. Lady A hits include “Need You Now,” “American Honey,” and “Bartender.”

Lady Antebellum’s past Central New York concerts include a 2019 Turning Stone show, the NYS Fair Grandstand in 2011, and a then-record crowd of 30,000 fans at Chevy Court in 2010.
