0113-NATIONAL-RUBBER-DUCKY-DAY.png
Welcome to National Rubber Ducky Day!

According to Sesame Street's calendar, January 13 marks the birthday of Rubber Duckie, the bathtub toy of Ernie. The day has since become celebrated as Rubber Ducky Day. Rubber Duckie first appeared on Sesame Street Episode 0078, on February 25, 1970; Ernie was in a bathtub in a room that resembled his living room, and sang the song, "Rubber Duckie." The most popular version of the song was sung by Ernie in Episode 0136, on November 16, 1970. This time he was in a bathroom with a plain blue background. Jim Henson was the real voice behind the song, and it went to #16 on the Billboard "Hot 100 Singles" chart in 1970 as well. Ernie, either by himself or with other characters, has sung other songs about his rubber duckie such as "Put Down the Duckie," "D-U-C-K-I-E," and "Do De Rubber Duck."

Quincy Guerrier increases playing time by being more ‘aware' (DO; McCleary)

Quincy Guerrier looked comfortable and fluid, perhaps because he was all alone. Prior to Syracuse’s (9-7, 2-3 Atlantic Coast) 63-55 win over No. 18 Virginia (11-4, 3-2) Saturday, SU clumped into a small space around the right elbow to shoot around. Except Guerrier. The 6-foot-7 forward and SU’s lone sure bench contributor camped in a corner by himself.

Three-pointer after 3-pointer swished through the net. When the Orange are at home, Guerrier starts his routine three hours before game time. He takes 45 minutes to shoot, work on free throws, and practice dribble-moves inside and outside the 3-point line. Saturday, the shots fell with ease.

A season of development has finally convinced him he can make those shots. Even when he hasn’t. SU head coach Jim Boeheim had insisted it from the first game of the season. Yet Guerrier has made just three of his 18 attempts from beyond the arc. Despite a slow start, Guerrier still found a role as an energizer off the bench. The early-season results were erratic, but Guerrier has now struck a balance between energy and making the right decisions.

“I’m slowing down a little bit,” Guerrier said. “Probably more mentally.”

Guerrier’s Syracuse debut in Italy was as a starter. The most heralded recruit in Syracuse’s 2019 class had the raw talent to excite, yet like most young players on the SU team, Boeheim said he wasn’t totally ready. Boeheim met with Guerrier before SU’s first exhibition game against Daemen and prepared him to come off the bench. Guerrier was Syracuse’s strongest player, and perhaps its most athletic big as well at 6-foot-7. His role was to take advantage of just that.

The Final Word: Syracuse upsets No. 18 Virginia (DO; podcast; Staff)

Syracuse entered Charlottesville, Virginia as 6.5-point underdogs but came away with a 63-55 overtime victory over No. 18 Virginia (11-4, 3-2 Atlantic Coast). The Orange (9-7, 2-3 ACC) went 5-for-6 from deep in the five-minute overtime period to pull away from the Cavaliers.

Buddy Boeheim’s miracle heave sealed the win in overtime, and his father said after the game it was a “lucky” shot. Listen to beat writers Michael McCleary and Nick Alvarez break down that and more:

What's up Cuse Nation? FINALLY, a signature win for the Orange! Syracuse scored 20 points in the final 5 minutes of overtime taking home the "W"! Win over No. 18 Virginia is good start, but will it lead to major turnaround for Orange? (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

Just when we all thought the Syracuse University men's basketball team was finished -- it totally redeemed itself -- with a too-good-to-believe road win over No. 18 Virginia.

But will it lead the Orange back to college basketball relevancy?

That's the question Syracuse fans are all pondering at the moment, but consider the fact that the Orange have stepped up their game in recent weeks, even though the results have not shown it.

Losses to Notre Dame and Virginia Tech were both ugly, especially given the fact that the Orange led at the halftime break in both contests.

Entering Saturday's road game against the Virginia Cavaliers, a place the Orange have not played all too well in the past, it seemed to be a formality that a loss was coming.

But that's how Jim Boeheim works his magic -- just when we're all set to throw in the towel on a team that's struggled to produce positive results for the first time in his storied coaching career -- he finds a way to get his team ready to play and pull out a win that nobody saw coming.

This season, though, the Atlantic Coast Conference has the feel that it's wide open.

Everybody is beatable -- even Duke and Florida State who find themselves at the top of the conference standings only two weeks into the new year.

The difference between 1-4 and 2-3 in league play is enormous, though, and the Orange finally earned a trademark win that they so desperately needed.

Baylor should be college basketball's No. 1, plus the ACC is a mess (ESPN; Borzello)

Saturday's front-loaded slate had only two games featuring two top-25 teams, but we were not without storylines.

The biggest talking point will be the end of North Carolina's 59-game home winning streak against Clemson, but we'll get to that -- and Brad Brownell's reaction -- in a bit. I'll also get to Baylor's ending its 17-game losing streak at Kansas.

Before that, though, some quick-hitters: Myles Powell and Seton Hall beat Marquette, even though Markus Howard slightly outdueled Powell in a battle between two of the most electric players in the country. West Virginia freshman Miles McBride continued his surprising breakout campaign in the Mountaineers' win over Texas Tech, scoring 22 points off the bench, his sixth straight double-figure scoring game. Ryan Daly had one of the wildest buzzer-beaters of the season -- even if it came in a losing effort. Illinois is the Big Ten team du jour after it beat Rutgers for its third win in a week. Kentucky's Immanuel Quickley continued his hot shooting from behind the arc and is now 14-for-23 in the Wildcats' four-game winning streak. Top-ranked Gonzaga rolled, as did No. 2 Duke. Auburn and San Diego State remained undefeated.

Now let's dig in.

Three things from Saturday

1. Baylor should be the No. 1 team in the country

No. 4 Baylor won for the first time at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday, finishing the first half on a tear and keeping No. 3 Kansas at arm's length throughout the second half en route to a 67-55 victory. With the win, there's a very strong argument that Baylor should be the No. 1 team in the country when Monday's polls come out. Résumé-wise, there shouldn't be much of a debate. Scott Drew's team now has road wins over Kansas and Texas Tech -- both in the past four days -- as well as a neutral-court victory against Villanova and home wins against Butler and Arizona. The lone loss came in Alaska against Washington on Nov. 8, a game the Bears led until essentially the final minute.

Jamie Squire/Getty Images
If you're an eye-test person, the Bears pass that, too. They're an elite defensive team, ranking in the top 10 in scoring defense and the top five in adjusted defensive efficiency. They force turnovers, block shots and contest in the half court. Davion Mitchell is a high-level individual defender. Offensively, Baylor has one of the best guard duos in the country in Jared Butler and MaCio Teague. Mark Vital is a glue guy, and Freddie Gillespie has provided rebounding and defense down low. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the Bears this season is that last season's best player, Tristan Clark, has been a bit part of the rotation, because of injuries, and Baylor has survived. Survived all the way to No. 1 in the country?

A couple of thoughts on Kansas: Devon Dotson was hampered by a hip pointer throughout the game, going to the locker room for a long stretch in the second half but managing to play 28 minutes. One of the Jayhawks' issues all season has been their lack of a consistent secondary ball handler or a backup point guard behind Dotson. Marcus Garrett can play that role, but it's a completely different dimension with Dotson. Defenses can drop back a bit more, making it tougher to get the ball to Udoka Azubuike inside. Azubuike had seven blocks but had one of his worst offensive games of the season, finishing with six points.

2. The ACC is a mess

Since adding Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse after the 2012-13 season, the ACC has received at least six bids to the NCAA tournament every season. Right now, there's no guarantee that the league will get much more than half that number.

Syracuse Basketball has Unique Chance to Rewrite Wrongs – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Shults)

Syracuse basketball just delivered a shocking home loss to the reigning champion Virginia Cavaliers. In SU’s first ACC game of the year – a home matchup against UVA – an anemic Orange offense totaled a paltry 34 points. That was Syracuse’s worst scoring output since WWII.

After that loss, Syracuse defeated Georgia Tech before falling to Notre Dame and Virginia Tech by a combined five points. Well, thanks to a wonky schedule, the Orange face the Irish and Hokies again in the next 10 days. Could SU win the revenge games like it did against UVA?

For starters, neither Notre Dame nor Virginia Tech are nearly as talented as Virginia. The pack line defense, which Virginia runs, is probably the most difficult defense in college basketball. There’s a reason Tony Bennett was cutting down the nets at the end of last season. And if a young Syracuse team led by a freshman point guard can rip a win away from Virginia and its vaunted defense, it can beat Virginia Tech and a mediocre Notre Dame squad.

The Hokies look to be something of a paper tiger, with a 12-4 record. Besides an upset victory over Michigan State, Virginia Tech’s best win is against an average NC State team. Granted, Syracuse hasn’t proven to be good, even coming off the upset of Virginia. At this point, SU fans are clamoring for consistency, which may not happen this season.

Meanwhile Notre Dame is the second worst team in the ACC, just ahead of Wake Forest. However, the Irish match up very well against the Orange. ND’s best player is big man John Mooney who is averaging almost 16 points and 14 rebounds. Without Mooney, Notre Dame would be terrible. For Syracuse to defeat an inferior Notre Dame team, either Bourama Sidibe has to play well, or Syracuse needs solid outings from Quincy Guerrier and Jesse Edwards. The first time the Orange and Irish played, Mooney outrebounded Guerrier and Sidibe 16 to 14. Edwards didn’t play. Sidibe and Guerrier don’t necessarily need to score much against Notre Dame, but they can’t allow Mooney to rack up 28 points like he did the first outing.

Syracuse basketball isn’t completely fixed, but it’s a good start (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball was desperate for a win and got it, but that doesn’t mean all of its problems are fixed, but it’s a good start. Here are the details.

Syracuse basketball got its second conference win of the season when they upset No. 18 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the John Paul Jones Arena.

It was a thrilling 63-55 overtime victory and instantly became the best win on the season for the Orange.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

A lot of things went wrong vs the Cavaliers and it nearly cost Syracuse the game.

The Orange lost the rebounding battle (47-to-44), Syracuse was abysmal offensively (32.8 percent from the field), and for 99 percent of the game, Buddy Boeheim couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Fortunately, they were bailed out by some late-game heroics from Buddy who finally put it together and ended up scoring 14 points, three triples, and a desperation heave that found the bottom of the net.

Clemson vs. North Carolina

Men's Basketball Highlights (2019-20)

From ACCDN: Clemson vs. North Carolina: For the first time in program history, Clemson won in Chapel Hill. With the 79-76 overtime win, the Tigers snapped a 59-game losing streak on the Tar Heels' home court. It was the longest active streak of its kind in the nation. The Tigers trailed by ten points with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, but forced overtime with a 17-4 run. Aamir Simms came up huge for Clemson, hitting two clutch three-pointers in the final minute of regulation as well as a tough driving layup late in overtime to give the Tigers a 3-point lead in the final moments. Simms finished the game with a team-high 20 points and 8 rebounds while John Newman III and Tevin Mack each chipped in 17 points in the monumental win. Brandon Robinson scored a career-high 27 points for the Tar Heels in the loss.

Duke Basketball: Takeaways from Blue Devils 900th win at Cameroon Indoor (bustingbrackets.com; Walton)

Duke Basketball is in the driver’s seat in the ACC and this was prior to Saturday’s win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Duke basketball now sits at 5-0 in the ACC after a dominating 90-59 win at Cameron Indoor.

Many sportsbooks had Duke basketball favored by as much as 19.5 points but their dominance was much greater. Coach K went with another starting lineup change in this one, inserting junior Jordan Goldwire into the starting lineup to get some additional defense and secondary playmaking on the floor.

The rest of the starting lineup was the status quo, with freshman Matthew Hurt and Vernon Carey Jr. manning the paint and Tre Jones and Cassius Stanley holding down the perimeter. Duke dominated this one early and they did it in style as they rocked Duke’s new alternate unis celebrating 40 years of Coach K with the Blue Devils.

Duke knew that while they are a great defensive team, they were going to need to be especially disciplined against a Wake Forest squad that is first in the ACC in free throw attempts.

— Duke Men’s Basketball (@DukeMBB) January 11, 2020
Just like the Georgia Tech game, Duke took a big lead into the half on Saturday. But unlike the Georgia Tech game, Duke didn’t allow the Wake Forest to put together any sort of consistent comeback effort down the stretch.

NY’s declining population: Who’s leaving Onondaga County and where do they go? (PS; Breidenbach)

Onondaga County is losing retired millionaire small business owners and young people to Florida, according to an analysis of IRS tax return data by The Empire Center for Public Policy.

The county lost a net 5,227 residents to Florida between 2011 and 2018, records show.

Those who left had an average annual income of $115,038, the records show. That is more than twice the median 2018 earnings — $51,900 — for Onondaga County, according to the U.S. Census.

A dive into the raw year-to-year numbers sheds some light on who those people are and where they went. Overall, the numbers do not show a big exodus from Onondaga County, but it is worth exploring the trends.

As in most Upstate New York counties, the largest number of people who left the county for other states went to Florida.

The county is losing two kinds of people to the Sunshine State, according to E.J. McMahon, the Empire Center’s research director.

  • Multimillionaire, small business owners who just cashed out.
  • Young people in search of opportunity.
McMahon based his speculations on summary tax return data released by the IRS and numbers estimated by the Census Bureau.

The migration to Florida and other warm states like California and the Carolinas is not just about sunshine and lower property taxes, McMahon said.

First, about the millionaires

These are people whose wealth could have gone unnoticed by the neighbors. They owned a modest small business. They sold it for more than $5 million. That bumped their assets over the $5.85 million mark and that means New York’s estate tax would kick in when they die.

Florida and 32 other states don’t have an estate tax.

There were two interesting spikes in the numbers in recent years that show some of the wealthiest Onondaga County residents moving to two counties in Florida: Sarasota and Collier counties. (Think upscale Naples and Marco Island.)
