Nonetheless, today celebrates the fig variety of the Newton. Figs originated in Asia Minor and fig rolls were created in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. Figs were introduced to the Western Hemisphere by the Spaniards, who brought them to Hispaniola in 1520. Two men are credited with the invention of what would become the Fig Newton. John Henry Mitchell developed a machine in 1892 that put a jam filling in a hollow cookie crust. He brought the machine to the Kennedy Biscuit Works—also known as the .A. Kennedy Steam Bakery—in Cambridgeport, a neighborhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company tried out the machine and named the creation "Newton's cakes," after the nearby Boston suburb of Newton. In 1898, Kennedy Biscuit Works combined with other companies to form the National Biscuit Country, which began being known as Nabisco a few years later. Charles Roser is also credited in having a hand in creating would would become the Fig Newton; he may have created the recipe that was sold to the Kennedy Biscuit Works. Syracuse rolled past Boston College 76-50 at the Dome on Wednesday night. BC assisted the construction crew working on the Dome renovations by piling up bricks against the Orange. The Eagles shot 5-of-27 in the first half, including a 0-of-14 mark from beyond the arc. The most interesting halftime note was seeing Syracuse guard Buddy Boeheim outscore the Eagles alone by a mark of 15-13. BC shot just 32 percent (21-of-60) overall against the Orange. Syracuse improved to 10-7 and 3-3 in conference play with the 26-point win. Wednesday’s victory was the first at home for the Orange in ACC play this season. “It’s hard. Elijah Hughes capped the surge with a 3-pointer, which gave Syracuse a 21-7 lead. That was later followed by an 11-0 run that put SU up 36-12 with 1:52 before, and Boston College would never recover. Things were so bad for the Eagles that they were single-handedly outscored by Boeheim after the first 20 minutes. The Eagles had 13 points on 0-14 shooting from 3-point land, while Boeheim scored 15 on 3-4 shooting from distance. Boston College picked it up offensively in the second half, but never seriously threatened the Orange, and Syracuse walked away with a rare ACC rout. Yet again BC was undone by poor shooting, while Syracuse went against their usual 3-point heavy ways, (they still shot plenty of those) driving insides for short to medium looks. Boeheim’s own son Buddy Boeheim led all scorers with 22 points. CJ Felder and Jairus Hamilton both led BC with 9 points. Chris Herren Jr. and Julian Rishwain turned in 6 points off two 3 point shots. These were 4 of BC’s six three points scores despite 30 attempts. Derryck Thornton’s return to the lineup did not seem to add the juice we all hoped it would, as BC’s leading scorer only notched 4 points. The cold shooting that plagued BC last game seemed to follow them into the first half of this one. BC took a one point lead when CJ Felder went to the free throw line. His one made free throw was the game’s first point and the last time BC would have the lead for the rest of the game. In the first half the Eagles struggled with Syracuse’s zone defense which was tightly packed inside the three point arc. BC’s solution to this zone was to try three point shot after three point shot but the BC shooters just couldn’t find the range. It didn’t help that Jay Heath found himself in foul trouble midway through the first half. Meanwhile, plenty of Syrcause’s shots were going in. After going 6 minutes without a field goal Syracuse heated up, especially Buddy Boeheim who not only lived up to his reputation as a three point shooter but found ways to drive to the basket and score interior field goals. To make things worse, BC’s early season tendency for bad turnovers reared its ugly head. While during the first half of the Georgia Tech game BC’s defense kept the Eagles in the game, against Syracuse the Eagles defense struggled; especially when it came to guarding the three-ball. Even when BC was able to force turnovers Syracuse was able to get back on defense quickly and stymie and fast-break opportunities. This trend continued throughout the game.
