Welcome to National Hot Sauce Day!

Today we celebrate and enjoy hot sauce! It is used in Bloody Marys, and put on foods such as eggs, enchiladas, and chicken wings. There are many variations and brands of it, but the one thing common to all hot sauce is the presence of chili peppers. Other common ingredients are salt and vinegar, and some have fruits and vegetables. Hotter peppers—those that are higher on the Scoville scale—are usually used to make hotter sauces, although pure capsaicin extract and mustard oil can increase the heat of a sauce as well. Ingredients vary by region, as does how hot sauces tend to be. Hot sauces aren't just liked for the flavor and heat they add to food; they also have many health benefits.

Habanero, cayenne, jalapeño, and chipotle peppers are commonly used to make hot sauce in America. Habanero and scotch bonnet peppers are favorites for hot sauce in the Caribbean, while chipotles are a favorite to make the sauce in Mexico. Raw chiles are often used instead of hot sauce in Thailand, although Sriracha is a hot sauce made there, and it has become popular around the world. Hot sauce in China is usually thicker and called chili sauce; brine solutions and pickling are also often involved in Chinese hot sauces.

Beat writers split on whether Syracuse can keep winning streak alive (DO; Staff)

Syracuse (11-7, 4-3 Atlantic Coast) looks to stretch its three-game win streak to four on the road against Notre Dame (11-6, 2-4) on Jan. 22. SU lost to Notre Dame in the first game after the new year, 88-87.

Here are the beat writers’ picks for Wednesday’s game.

Nick Alvarez (13-5)
Comeback kid
Notre Dame 75, Syracuse 69

Syracuse’s winning streak has allowed Mike to climb back into these predictions, and that simply needs to stop. Credit to where it’s due, however. SU’s young team is on a roll. The Orange are rising to their potential with unreal shooting performances by Buddy Boeheim, and a stingier 2-3 zone has knocked out a trio of bad offensive teams. Syracuse’s offensive and defensive efficiency currently ranks third and fourth, respectively, in the ACC. And while Notre Dame isn’t a stalwart, they have John Mooney: the 6-foot-10 difference-maker the Orange haven’t seen on their current run. He’s averaging 15.1 rebounds per game at home and scored 28 when these teams met a few weeks ago. It’ll be close, but when it comes to Bourama Sidibe/Marek Dolezaj against Mooney, I’ll go with one of the best rebounders in the country.

Michael McCleary (12-6)
Irish Exit
Syracuse 78, Notre Dame 74

Syracuse is here to stay. Well, at least for one more game. Eventually, one would think that the constant traveling will get to them, but I think the Orange might be able to stretch their luck to one more win on the road. SU’s postseason chances are still on life support, but a win in one of its next two games could give it the boost in needs to limit the amount of legwork necessary in the second half of conference play. Many people will be surprised, and deservedly so, if Syracuse is able to pull off yet another road win. But the Orange are playing their best basketball of the season, and if it’s going to happen again, it might as well happen now.

Are Boeheim, Hughes nation's most dangerous 3-point shooting duo? (PS; Ditota)

Syracuse relies heavily on 3-point shots to fuel its offense. And halfway through the 2019-20 season, the Orange might have the best pair of sharpshooters on any Division I men’s college basketball roster.

Buddy Boeheim and Elijah Hughes appear on every page of the NCAA’s 3-point shooting statistics. They are among the top 50 performers in 3-point attempts and 3-point makes per game. And Hughes sits just outside the top 50 in 3-point shooting percentage; he’s shooting .387 while No. 50 Jordan Dardis (Ohio) is at .388. Boeheim is shooting .409 from the 3-point line and ranks 38th nationally in that category.

“It’s not much of a surprise to me,” SU assistant coach Gerry McNamara said of the shooting capabilities of Boeheim and Hughes. “I know what they’re capable of. I know Buddy is as elite a shooter as it gets. And Elijah just has that ability to get hot any time, anywhere. I think it’s a testament to their work.”

What to know about Syracuse’s rematch with Notre Dame (DO; Schafer)

Syracuse (11- 7, 4-3 Atlantic Coast) travels to Notre Dame (11-6, 2-4) on Wednesday at the Joyce Center. The Orange enter the matchup with the Irish following three straight conference wins while Notre Dame is coming off a 78-74 win over Georgia Tech.

Here’s what to know about Notre Dame ahead of the matchup.

All-time series: Syracuse leads, 29-22

Gambling odds: Notre Dame is favored by 4.5 points, per Oddsshark.com

Last time they played: This was the game that will forever be remembered as the “one JG3 almost stole.” After Joseph Girard III was fouled and stepped over by Prentiss Hubb late in the second half, the freshman guard went on a scoring spree. Girard dropped 10 consecutive points for the Orange, including two 3-pointers. But a four-point lead with 3:37 left in the game wasn’t enough for Syracuse. Notre Dame forward John Mooney finished with 28 points and 14 rebounds in an 88-87 Notre Dame win at the Carrier Dome on Jan. 4.

The Notre Dame report: Much of Notre Dame’s scoring comes from the two players that lit up the Orange two weeks ago, Hubb and Mooney. The pair combined for 50 points which — along with T.J. Gibbs’ 21 points — contributed most of the Fighting Irish’s points. Much of Notre Dame’s offense came from inserting the ball at the high post and then distributing. The Athletic’s Matthew Gutierrez tweeted a screenshot of such players Tuesday.

Notre Dame Men’s Basketball: Syracuse Orange Preview (onefootdown.com; Greene)

Back at it again with the white jerseys

After a week off, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team is playing a game again. On Wednesday night, the Irish return home to play another conference game against the Syracuse Orange. It will be good to go back home. The Irish look for a chance to get a win streak going this season, something we haven’t seen much of this year (hey, two is a streak). Notre Dame will host Syracuse, whom they have already played this season just this month. The Irish (11-6, 2-4) beat the Orange (11-7, 4-3) 88-87 in the Carrier Dome in an absolute thriller that went down to the wire. The game had high scoring, rainbow shots, and a little bit of a scuffle.

The Irish have no doubt struggled this season overall, especially in conference play. However, before the team got a week off, they went into Atlanta last Wednesday night and beat Georgia Tech. No matter how good or bad you are, getting road ACC wins is a great thing. This would be a good time to get a win streak and a home conference win, though. In the game last week, the Irish and the Yellow Jackets went back and forth all night, as they usually do. The Irish ended up with the 78-74 victory at the end of the night.

Can Syracuse make it four in a row? Keys for the Orange turnaround (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

Syracuse Men's Basketball is in the middle of a three-game win streak with its most impressive victories coming on the road--a fact that could come in handy come March.

But that's a long way from now, Syracuse genuinely, as much as it sounds like "coach-speak" needs to approach this all one game at a time.

A lot has changed since Syracuse almost beat Notre Dame, falling at the Dome by one on January 4.

Those differences, like they were against Virginia Tech in the rematch on the road last weekend, could be everything in Wednesday night's game with the Fighting Irish.

Here are my three keys to the Syracuse turnaround and in turn, a potential win against Notre Dame.

Buddy Boeheim's surge helps everybody

Buddy Boeheim just continues to impress basketball fans all over the country.

This year especially, he's added another weapon to his arsenal--a powerful drive to the basket.

It's a game-changer.

Buddy scored seven straight points to help SU pull away from Boston College last week and 18 straight in a wild run against Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Everyone knows Buddy can launch a three-point shot from anywhere in the gym but his ability to put it on the floor and make things happen is creating quite a few headaches for opposing defenses.

For example, Virginia Tech tried two different defenders on Buddy to no avail (even prompting Buddy to say "he can't guard me" which Orange fans adored.

Turned The Corner? The Corner Hasn't Arrived Yet (spectrumlocalnews.com; Larson)

I’m hearing lots of talk about the Syracuse basketball team having “turned the corner” after winning its last three games. Are the Orange playing better basketball lately than they were earlier in the season? Yes, I’d agree with that.

But how can you turn the corner when you haven’t even reached the turn yet?

SU (11-7, 4-3 ACC) is roughly one-third of the way through the grueling 20-game conference schedule. It will reach the halfway point after playing the next three games - at Notre Dame, home with Pitt, and at Clemson. So by this time next week, we’ll be 10 games in with 10 more to go, and the Duke Blue Devils up next.

Can we hold off on the “turning the corner” talk until then?

Syracuse has won three ACC road games already this season and that is commendable. But a closer look reveals the three teams they’ve beaten are a collective 3-8 in conference home games this season with Georgia Tech the worst offender at 0-4. So maybe we shouldn’t crown the Orange yet.

Up next is Notre Dame which is 0-2 in South Bend this ACC season, albeit one of those losses is by three to No. 6 Louisville and the other is by one to Boston College. After that SU is home with Pittsburgh who’s beaten both Florida State and North Carolina but also lost to Nicholls State.

If Syracuse can get through this week unscathed I’ll be closer to believing.

Syracuse Orange v. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Predictions (1/22/20) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

Syracuse goes for its fourth win in a row when it seeks revenge for an earlier season loss against Notre Dame (7:00 p.m. ET / ESPN2) on Wednesday. Ahead of the game, The Juice Online’s Saugat Sen and Wes Cheng give their predictions below.

SAUGAT SEN (Season Record 1-1): Syracuse’s 88-87 loss against Notre Dame earlier in January went just as the Irish had planned. John Mooney dominated the Orange with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Meanwhile, Bourama Sidibe was dominated inside, finishing with only two points and six rebounds.

A lot has change since that loss. Syracuse is now on a three-game winning streak and are currently tied for fifth place in the ACC. Lost in the hype of Elijah Hughes and Buddy Boeheim’s stellar performances is Marek Dolezaj’s solid contributions during the streak.

In the last five games, Dolezaj is averaging 9.4 points, 10 rebounds and 3.8 assists and has been the dependable asset on both ends of the floor that Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has needed.

Syracuse will need to have have an answer to slow down Mooney, and I expect Sidibe to give a better performance down low and Hughes and Boeheim to continue their hot shooting outside. A third straight double-double for Dolezaj should not be out of question either, with Syracuse topping Notre Dame 78-74.

WES CHENG (Season Record 8-2): Since Notre Dame defeated Syracuse on Jan. 4, the Irish have played three games that have been decided by a combined 12 points, resulting in a 1-2 record. The Fighting Irish missed a chance for a statement win against then-No. 13 Louisville, erasing a 36-24 deficit, but failing to close out in the final minutes.

Holliday: Seismic shift in the ACC's balance of power :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Holliday)

NC State scored a stunning 53-51 win Monday night at Virginia. This was the Wolfpack's first win in Charlottesville in 15 years and the Pack's first ever win in the John Paul Jones Arena. At a time when power in the ACC is gravitating away from the usual places, given that Virginia has been the dominant team over the last few years, maybe NC State's win is part of the seismic shift? Or maybe State's win suggests a return to normalcy.

The Big Four once dominated the Atlantic Coast Conference: 51 of the first 59 regular season championships went to UNC, Duke, NC State or Wake Forest. But since 2013 only Carolina has broken through, winning the league in 2016 and 2017.

Clearly the Tar Heels have no shot at the regular season this year. Virginia, which has won four of the last six in the ACC, sits down near the middle of the pack for now after losing to State.

Saturday's games however, send a clear signal that 2020 could once again belong to a school located far from the center of the ACC's geographic footprint. Louisville dominated Duke in Cameron for a half, and withstood a furious Blue Devil rally to hold on 79-73, while Florida State turned back a determined effort from Miami in overtime. Miami, remember, won the league in 2013, putting the Hurricanes on the short list of outside teams that have accomplished this feat - Clemson, Georgia Tech, and of course Virginia are the others, along with Maryland and South Carolina which have long since left the ACC.

Brian's Landing restaurant to open in DeWitt (PS; Doran)

Brian’s Landing restaurant and bar, which has been open at Green Lakes State Park since May 2018, is opening a second location, this one in Jamesville.

The new restaurant - called Brian’s Landing in the Ville - will be in the former Notch 8 restaurant at 6533 E Seneca Turnpike, said Chris Campione, vice president of sales and marketing for Servomation, the restaurant’s parent company. It is slated to open in February.

Brian’s Landing closed on the sale on Friday, Campione said.

Notch 8 closed in August.

Notch 8, which opened in 2014, went on the the market in March 2019 with an asking price of $449,000. It was assessed at $330,000, according to county records. What the property sold for was not disclosed.

While the Green Lakes Italian-themed restaurant is seasonal, the Jamesville location will be open year round, Campione said.

The new restaurant has a slightly smaller footprint than the Green Lakes location, Campione said, but will seat 100 guests between the tables and bar. While the menus will be similar, there will be some new entrees unique to the Jamesville restaurant which haven’t been announced yet, he said.

The new restaurant will include a two entrees and a bottle of wine for $40 deal on Wednesday nights that’s featured at the Green Lakes location. The new restaurant will also serve prime rib on Saturdays.

“We are very excited to continue to expand our service and cuisine to our current customers as well as the residents in Jamesville," said Renee Bruno, owner of Brian’s Landings with her husband, Brian. “Our goal was to not only recreate the success and following from Green Lakes, but also to give the building and menu its own identity.”

Interior renovations on the building are underway, Campione said.
