Welcome to Rosa Parks Day!

Rosa Parks Day celebrates the legacy of Rosa Parks, a woman who is a symbol of equality, civil rights, and the American Civil Rights Movement. The holiday is celebrated on either February 4, her birthday, or on December 1, the anniversary of the date in 1955 on which she refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Various states officially observe the holiday on one of the two dates. Some municipalities officially mark the day as well. The holiday can also be observed unofficially on either date by all who wish to do so. Beyond remembering the legacy of Rosa Parks, the day promotes civil rights and equal opportunities in the present day. Events and activities are often organized by church leaders, politicians, and leaders of organizations. In classrooms, the holiday is marked with activities focused on Rosa Parks and her fight against discrimination and for equality.

Some states mark the holiday on February 4, on Rosa Parks's birthday. The California State Legislature designated the day in 2000, and it was first celebrated on Friday, February 4, 2000. In subsequent years, the holiday has been observed on the first Monday following February 4. In Missouri, the General Assembly set the day aside in 2006, and it was first observed the following year. Illinois first observed it in 2019, after the passing of a Senate Resolution. In Michigan, the Legislature designated the day in 1997 with the passage of Act 28. It is observed on the first Monday after February 4 and was first observed in 1998.

What more does SU basketball need to do to be good? (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange had just lost to Duke in front of 31,000-plus fans at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange had not shot the ball well, especially from 3-point range which is supposed to be a strength.

The Orange had led early, but fallen behind by as many as 15 points in the second half. The Blue Devils were rolling to victory.

But then Syracuse dug in its heels and fought back, closing to within five points with three minutes remaining.

Duke stymied the rally, but the way Syracuse had played against the 9th-ranked Blue Devils, whose lineup featured four McDonald’s All-Americans, offered some hope for the remainder of the season.

“We played as bad as it gets shooting the ball and to be five or six points down with four or five minutes left is a good sign,’’ Syracuse sophomore Buddy Boeheim said in the post-game locker room. “You want to win those, but we’re getting a lot better. Early on in the year, I don’t think we would have been able to fight back like that. We weren’t balanced; we didn’t have the chemistry then, but we’re getting better day by day.’’

Syracuse Basketball: Orange starters improvement is night and day (itlh; Queripel)

Syracuse basketball starters, Buddy Boeheim and Marek Dolezaj have drastically improved from last season. We look at their stats and involvement this year.

Coming into the season, Syracuse basketball had many unanswered questions. A lot of these involved the departure of their stars, Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett.

Considering those huge losses, it was uncertain who would step up in their absence. It was clear Elijah Hughes would carry a lion share of the offense. However, it was unexpected the leaps and bounds both Buddy Boeheim and Marek Dolezaj have taken in only a year.

When we start to talk about the end of year awards like the ACC most improved player, both Dolezaj and Boeheim need to be in the conversation. Since the Orange joined the ACC, Rakeem Christmas is the only Syracuse player to win the award. Now let’s take a look at Boeheim’s case for the award and how he’s improved from his freshman year.

Last season Buddy played only 17 minutes a game and was primarily a bench player. His abilities beyond the arc were apparent, but there were some visible gaps in his game. His first year, he did not need to lead the team and was essentially the fourth or fifth scoring option. But now this season, Boeheim has emerged as the second-leading scorer for the Orange alongside Elijah Hughes.

2018-19 stats per basketball-reference:

  • 6.8 points a game
  • 1 assist a game
  • 35 percent from three
  • 38 percent from the field
2019-20 stats:

  • 16.3 points per game
  • 2.3 assists
  • 40 percent from three
  • 41 percent from the field
Buddy’s stats have seen a drastic improvement this season. It is a positive sign to see both his three-point and field goal percentage numbers increasing. This is happening as his attempts per game rose by nearly eight shots.

Syracuse desperately needed someone to fill the scoring void this year, and Buddy has accomplished that task. While other parts of his game are slowly improving, it’s his scoring that made a rapid jump in his sophomore year.

Syracuse Seems to Be Lacking This Key Element – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

As the season has progressed a few flaws have emerged for Syracuse basketball.

At the beginning of the season, it was an over-reliance on the three-ball to win games. That seemingly has been fixed with terrible shooting performances transforming into wins against Pitt (5-21) and Virginia Tech (6-24).

The more the season has gone on, the issue of SU’s inability to match up with any skilled big on the interior has reared its ugly head. In fact, it’s become so frequent that it seems to be the most common topic of discussion during any Jim Boeheim post-game press conference.

Both of those issues were readily apparent in Saturday’s loss to No. 9 Duke inside the Dome with SU shooting just 6-26 from beyond the arc and allowing Blue Devils freshman Vernon Carey to feast for 26 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.

Those are both extremely frustrating numbers to take in but it still doesn’t give you the entire scope of the issue SU is facing as it attempts to make a run at the NCAA Tournament. In addition to a lack of quality shooting performances and struggles in the defensive paint, and perhaps above these issues, stands Syracuse’s lack of the clutch gene and lack of a takeover-type guy.

I know what you’re saying, “What are you talking about Syracuse won three close games on the road against Virginia, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. They couldn’t have won those games without the clutch gene.”

I’ll give you this, the Virginia win is probably the closest SU has come to showing off any semblance of a clutch gene or late-game takeover scorer with Buddy Boeheim scoring 9 of his 14 points in the overtime period and the Orange fighting back from a four-point deficit to force OT.

Outside of that game, though, all three of Syracuse’s other close wins (Virginia Tech on the road, Notre Dame on the road and Pitt at home) have not been the result of any kind of clutch performance or one guy willing the team to victory in the closing minutes.

Episode 201-Syracuse Basketball: Duke post game! Guest James Szuba

The start of February means the 2019-20 college basketball season has entered its fourth month of existence, in terms of actual game play. At this point, there’s still a lot to be decided, but conference tournaments aren’t that far away.

Let’s jump in on this week’s ACC Basketball Power Rankings, which include another look at Devin Vassell of FSU, Duke’s Vernon Carey Jr. and Syracuse’s issues on the defensive glass.

No. 1 Louisville

Louisville has wins in eight straight games and currently ranks inside the top 20 nationally in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiencies, according to KenPom. Things are good. This team is good, and deep with plenty of versatility.

In the middle of last week, Jordan Nwora went nuts against Boston College: 37 points, powered by seven 3-pointers.

Pretty ridiculous shooting display from Jordan Nwora vs. BC: 7-14 3PA, 37 points. Really comfortable coming off screens ready to shoot, especially pindowns to his left or right pindowns if he can curl hard and square the feet. Good movement shooter, quick release.

— Brian Geisinger (@bgeis_bird) January 30, 2020

Over the weekend, however, it was Ryan McMahon’s turn to sizzle for the Cards: 23 points (7-of-10 3PA) in the win over NC State.

For the season now, Louisville, as a team, has shot 39.7 percent on its 3-point attempts — No. 4 in the nation. The Cards have also scored 1.18 points per possession (58.8 eFG%) on catch-and-shoot attempts in the half court, per Synergy. That ranks No. 16 in the country.

If you want to build a case for Louisville as a serious Final Four threat, it starts with this team’s talent, obviously. The roster features several future pros, like Nwora and David Johnson. Beyond that, though, this team can defend — 42.9 eFG% for opponents, which ranks No. 5 in the nation — and shoot from distance. Combine those two factors, and Louisville has a really strong foundation.

No. 2 Duke

Duke’s offense is red hot. The Blue Devils have won three straight games — all of which occurred while scoring better than 1.2 points per possession. It certainly helps to have Vernon Carey Jr. in the middle of the floor, wrecking shop.

In wins over Pittsburgh and Syracuse (a solid road victory), Carey used close to 34 percent of Duke’s possessions while on the floor. VCJ combined for seven dunks and 16-of-21 (76.2 FG%) shooting at the rim, too. Even with Pitt’s defense geared to making his life difficult, VCJ continuously carved out deep post position.

Carey, who draws 7.8 fouls per 40 minutes (No. 4 nationally), went 8-of-10 from the free throw line while also mauling Syracuse on the glass. VCJ grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds at Syracuse, with six coming on the offensive side of the floor (33 percent offensive rebound rate). Carey is now shooting over 71 percent on put-back attempts, too, per Synergy.

Cassius Stanley was really good for Duke as well.

Novel deal could mean new life for 138 polluted properties in Syracuse and suburbs (PS; Knauss)

The former Winkelman Co. property on Syracuse’s East Side was apparently abandoned by its owner years ago. And no one else wanted it. The potential liability for cleaning up asbestos, discarded tires or other pollution made ownership too risky.

Now that may change.

Local officials recently brokered a deal with New York state that could make redevelopment possible at the Winkelman site and more than 130 other polluted, tax-delinquent properties in Syracuse and Onondaga County.

The deal frees the Greater Syracuse Land Bank from liability for environmental cleanup at 138 specific brownfield parcels in Syracuse and Onondaga County. The city and the county also are absolved of responsibility. They can seize the properties for back taxes and transfer them to the land bank without risk.

Syracuse officials say they will take a hard look at seizing the Winkelman site and other brownfields through tax foreclosure so the properties can be redeveloped.

“The agreement takes away a major obstacle to bringing the property back to productive use,’’ said Greg Loh, chief policy officer. “We will immediately begin exploring next steps to accomplish that.”

The agreement – only the second of its type in New York – is between the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the state comptroller’s office, Syracuse, Onondaga County and the land bank.
