Flannel is made of a fine, smooth yarn called worsted yarn. The yarn is napped on one or both sides. Napping is a finishing process where the fiber ends are brought to the surface, making the fabric softer and warmer. The words "flannel" and "plaid" are often used interchangeably, but they are referring to different things. Flannel is a material or fabric, not a pattern. In contrast, plaid is a pattern. It originated with tartans many centuries ago. Many plaid shirts today are made of synthetic fabrics and lighter cotton instead of flannel, although many plaid flannel garments are still made. Flannel was first made in Wales, in the sixteenth or seventeenth century. It was made to replace wool, as it was warmer and sturdier. Since its creation, flannel has been a mainstay of workwear, and it has been important to fashion at certain times throughout history as well. Throughout the years, its warmth, comfort, and versatility have kept it popular. After getting its start in Wales, flannel spread around Europe during the Industrial Revolution, being aided by a process called carding. It is not known where its name came from, but the French began calling it flanelle, while Germans called it flanell. In America, it may have first been used during the Civil War, in soldiers' undershirts and four-button coats. In 1889, Hamilton Carhartt opened a factory in Detroit and started making flannel clothes for workers to wear. It was at this time that flannel started being worn by factory workers, by those working on the railroads and in other types of construction, and by loggers. It was also used for long underwear. SU News Syracuse guard Buddy Boeheim (35) and the rest of his teammates celebrate a win against Wake Forest on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Dennis Nett Enjoy the moment, Syracuse fans. You had a great weekend (PS; Axe) “Great!” That’s your answer on this Monday, Syracuse University sports fans. When you are greeted with the inevitable “how was your weekend?" question on this Monday, you don’t have to give a fake answer about the Oscars telecast you feel asleep halfway through or get involved in a boring conversation about which roads weren’t plowed this weekend. Your weekend was great. Or pretty, pretty, pretty good if you prefer. It started on Friday at the Carrier Dome when the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team crushed Colgate by a score of 21-14. Not only did the Orange get revenge for a season-opening loss to the Raiders last year, the legend of the No. 22 appears to have been re-born in the form of Chase Scanlan, who scored seven goals in his Orange debut. ... Syracuse Basketball: What’s former Orange star Andrew White III up to? (itlh; Queripel) Former Syracuse basketball star Andrew White is making his way for another blue and orange squad in the NBA’s G League. We have all the updates. Former Syracuse basketball standout, Andrew White, was back in the local news this week as his brother suited up for Wake Forest to take on the ‘Cuse. His brother Andrien White started and finished with nine points in 21 minutes. Andrew was interviewed by Syracuse.com before the game about his brothers play and gave some advice to ‘Cuse to let his brother get off shots. “At the end of the day, though, we’re both shooters. So I definitely need Buddy and Joe Girard and Elijah and them guys to let him get 10 or 12 3s off. Make sure you note that down so that word gets over there. … I’ve just got to emphasize that the scouting report is, please, to let my brother get off 12 3s. You make sure to tag Joe and Buddy in that and tell them I said it.” Andrew White’s alma mater got the better of Andrien and bested the Deamon Deacons by two in the final seconds of the game. While Andrien’s college journey is concluding, his brother, Andrew is still in the beginning stretch of his professional career. Let’s take a look at what he did for the Orange and beyond. Before ending up at ‘Cuse, White spent his first three collegiate seasons in other places. He started with Kansas in his first two years, where he was a bench player. Once White decided to transfer, he was forced to sit out a season. Then he ended up in the Big Ten with Nebraska. For the Cornhuskers, he became a full-fledged starter averaging almost 17 points in under 30 minutes. But for his senior season, he came to Syracuse, where he played his best basketball. In his senior season for the Orange, he started every game and played nearly 38 minutes per game and averaged 19 points while shooting 40 percent beyond the arc. ... 'Cuse Militia Podcast - Armchair Media Network (armchairmedianetwork.com; podcast; Cuse Militia) Episode 203- Syracuse Basketball: Wake Forest Post-game/N.C.
