Welcome to President's Day!

President's Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated every year on the third Monday of February to honor George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and also all the Presidents of the country.

Until 1971 both 12th February and 22nd February were celebrated as public holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington . In 1971 President Richard Nixon declared the Presidents' Day as one federal public holiday to honor all the Presidents of the United States.

George Washington (22nd February, 1732 - 14th December, 1799): At the time of his birth America was not a free nation, it was under British rule and Americans were struggling for freedom. George Washington was an American general in the war against Britain to get freedom for America. He was elected as the first president of the United States.

Abraham Lincoln (12th February, 1809 - 15th April, 1865): He was born in a very poor family and struggled a lot to obtain his basic education. By virtue of his hard work and dedication he became the 16th president of the United States.

Axe: On SU basketball’s NCAA Tournament path, is there still a chance? (PS; Axe)

The 80-77 loss by the Syracuse University basketball team may have popped its 2020 NCAA Tournament bubble, but I decided to torture myself and see what kind of path exists for the Orange to get to March Madness anyway.

Syracuse is currently 14-11 with a 7-7 record in the ACC. As of this writing, Syracuse has a NET ranking of 65 with a 2-5 record against Quad 1 teams and a 2-5 record against Quad 2 for a combined 4-10 mark. Syracuse is a combined 10-1 against Quad 3 and Quad 4 teams.

Do a Command+ search on bracketmatrix.com and you won’t find the word “Syracuse” on it.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi doesn’t have Syracuse on the bubble, the last four in, first four out, last four out, or at In-N-Out Burger.

The Orange has to play its way into the NCAA field and doesn’t have a lot of time to do it.

There are six regular season games left for Syracuse. At Louisville (Feb. 19), Georgia Tech (Feb. 22), at Pittsburgh (Feb. 26), North Carolina (Feb. 29), at Boston College (March 3), at Miami (March 7).

As of this writing, here are the Quad rankings for each of the remaining opponents on SU’s schedule:

  • Louisville-Quad 1
  • Georgia Tech-Quad 3
  • Pittsburgh-Quad 2
  • UNC-Quad 3
  • Boston College-Quad 3
  • Miami-Quad 2
I could come up with a bunch of scenarios for how the season could finish with six games remaining in the regular season.

Here are a few that matter.

If the Orange finishes:

6-0

Syracuse would end the regular season with an overall record of 20-11 and a 13-7 ACC mark. The Orange would have a combined 7-10 record against Quad 1 and 2 teams.

'Bubble has all but popped’: Fans, media react to Syracuse’s loss to Florida State (PS; Burrows)

Syracuse basketball’s NCAA Tournament hopes may have slipped away with an 80-77 loss to Florida State on Saturday.

Syracuse (14-11, 7-7) needed a signature win, but came up just short against the Seminoles on the road. Florida State still has not lost at home this season.

The Seminoles (21-4, 11-3) dominated the Orange inside while holding a 47-29 advantage in total rebounds. With star Devin Vassell benched, Patrick Williams led Florida State with 17 points off the bench while M.J. Walker added 16.

Here’s what fans and media said about Syracuse’s loss on Saturday:

Syracuse's NCAA bubble has all but popped. Even with a win over Louisville, they'd have to go deep into ACC Tournament now to get an at-large. Maybe winning the ACC Tournament is only option left. Brent Axe on Twitter

— Brent Axe (@BrentAxeMedia) February 15, 2020

Syracuse has been full of effort, entertainment, and everything else this season except for wins in close situations. Unfortunately, that’s kinda the thing that counts the most.

— Bradley Slavin (@bradslavin) February 15, 2020

And despite everything above about Syracuse’s current outlook, let no one doubt that Elijah Hughes is easily one of the best players in the whole country. Nearly carried the Orange to victory today despite being in pain all day.

SU lost two straight, but was in position to win both tough games: Now what? (PS; Ditota)

So close.

Syracuse lost to the No. 8 team in the nation Saturday. It lost 80-77 on Florida State’s home court, where the Seminoles have won 20 straight and more than 95 percent of the games they have played here since Feb. 2015. (They are 62-3 after Saturday’s win.)

SU came back from an eight-point deficit to engineer a 9-0 run in the second half. It took the lead on a deep 3-point shot by Joe Girard with 5 minutes, 40 seconds left in the game. It owned a 69-66 advantage when Elijah Hughes made one of two free throws at 2:44. It owned a 71-70 advantage when Quincy Guerrier drained two free throws at 2:18. It owned a 73-72 advantage after Elijah Hughes converted at the rim with 1:54 left.

And then, nothing much went right for SU.

FSU, so dominant on the backboards Saturday (47-29 advantage) grabbed its own misses and converted. The Seminoles went inside. They drove the ball. And Syracuse could not defend them.

“We gotta make those last couple plays. It’s ballgame if we make those plays,” Elijah Hughes said. “They’re really good here. They rarely lose at home. We just gotta make those little plays down the stretch.”

Syracuse basketball's NCAA hopes fade into distance with FSU loss - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

While Syracuse put forth a valiant effort, it just was not enough as they suffered an 80-77 loss at
#8 Florida State on Saturday afternoon, their fourth defeat in five games. Facing one of their best remaining chances to bolster any chance at an NCAA Tournament bid, the Orange (14-11, 7-7 ACC) led by a single point with under two minutes to play, but were outscored the rest of the way, 8-4. Elijah Hughes had a potential game-tying 30-footer rattle off the rim in the final seconds, clinching the 20th consecutive home victory for the Seminoles (21-4, 11-3).

In what would be a theme for the rest of the game, FSU grabbed three offensive rebounds on their opening possession. The ‘Noles pulled down 20 offensive boards and outrebounded Syracuse in the game, 47-29, including a dominating 23-10 advantage in the second half. It was not all bad inside for the Orange, as they outscored the hosts in the paint, 40-24.

SU struggled from outside, making less than one-third of their three-pointers for the eighth straight outing as they went 7-for-25 from long range. Most disappointing was Buddy Boeheim, who missed all five of his attempts beyond the arc as he finished scoreless. Syracuse did force 18 turnovers on the day, but they were not enough.

The Seminoles set the tone early. While the Orange scored the first two baskets of the day, FSU responded with ten straight points to take the lead. SU crawled back into the game, getting a long alley-oop from Joe Girard III to Quincy Guerrier to get within a deuce then three foul shots from Girard to pull within 17-16 with one second shy of eight minutes elapsed.

Florida State stretched the lead out to six in their next two possessions, but Syracuse respionded with a 13-5 run to take the lead. Girard canned a deep triple to halve the margin, then Elijah Hughes slithered inside for a lay-up. Marek Dolezaj spun inside for a lay-up after an FSU triple, then Girard connected from the left wing for three and a one-point Orange edge.

Syracuse Basketball: FSU loss is a bummer, but let’s applaud the Orange (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball unfortunately fell again in a tight tilt to an ACC foe, however, the Orange players should hold their heads up extremely high.

Syracuse basketball had a prime occasion to pick up a marquee success against a top-10 opponent on the road when the Orange battled Florida State on Saturday afternoon.

The chips didn’t arrive the way of the ‘Cuse, as Syracuse (14-11, 7-7) faded down the stretch versus the No. 8 Seminoles (21-4, 11-3), with FSU pulling out an 80-77 achievement.

I get that Orange Nation is disappointed in how the 2019-20 campaign has transpired.

Many ‘Cuse fanatics, following the latest heart-breaking setback, have declared that Syracuse has no chance at an NCAA Tournament berth, that Jim Boeheim doesn’t know how to coach, that his son, sophomore guard Buddy Boeheim, shouldn’t see so much court time and that the Orange hoops program is an embarrassment.

While everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, from my perspective, the bulk of the aforementioned negative sentiments are utter non-sense. Yes, the ‘Cuse is mired in a slump and will likely hear its name called for the NIT, instead of the Big Dance.

Syracuse basketball 2019-20 season will be remembered by ‘what ifs’ (itlh; Esden Jr)

The 2019-20 Syracuse basketball season will always be remembered by a series of ‘what ifs’. We take a look back at what could’ve been for the Orange.

On Sunday morning Neil Adler of Inside the Loud House painted a beautiful portrait looking back at the 2019-20 campaign for the Syracuse basketball club.

He articulated why Orange fans should look at their team with pride considering the variety of unforeseen circumstances that have befallen this year’s squad. It’s a very nice well thought out piece.

Here are the facts, Syracuse is 14-11 on the year, 7-7 in the ACC (sixth-best currently in the conference), and aren’t listed in the NCAA tournament field by any expert.

Although in a different world this team could’ve gone from tournament afterthought to securely in the field.

If we go back to non-conference play, Syracuse didn’t just get beat they got throttled.

Once a McDonald’s cook, she and mom will open own food business at Salt City Market (PS; Eisenstadt)

When Latoya Ricks first came to the U.S., she worked at the McDonald’s on Erie Blvd. On her break, she’d mix up what she could find in the kitchen and invent something new.

She remembers a chicken tender sandwich, a special burger with secret sauce.

She smiles 18 years later, standing in her own kitchen, chopping up onions and peppers.

That was a lifetime ago.

Ricks and her mother, Gloria McCubbin, are one of the eight teams that won a stall in the new Salt City Market food hall in downtown Syracuse. They’ll be bringing some of their island home to downtown, cooking Jamaican food with an American twist.

They plan to call their booth Jamaican Supreme Cuisine.

The idea behind the $22 million Salt City Market, a project of the Allyn Foundation, is twofold.

The first: Revitalize a troubled and important spot downtown. The parking lot on South Salina Street where the market is rising had long been a source of drug problems and violence. Now, it’s across from downtown’s rehabbed gem, the Hotel Syracuse.

The second purpose of the market is to help home cooks who could be restaurant chefs if only they had the money and business know-how.
