Welcome to Shrove Monday!

Shrove Monday is part of the Shrovetide celebrations that encompass the week before Lent. It takes place on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. In between these two days is Shrove Tuesday. "Shrove" is the past tense of "shrive," which means to obtain absolution from sin. Shriving can be done through confession and penance. Historically, English Christians were supposed to do some shriving before Lent. "Shrove Monday" and "Shrove Tuesday" are terms not widely used in the United States and Canada, but they are still sometimes used in Lutheran, Anglican, and Roman Catholic churches.

Shrove Monday is part of the Carnival celebrations that take place in many countries. In Germany, Denmark, and Austria, it is known as Rosenmontag, meaning Rose Monday. In Germany, the apex of Carnival in on Shrove Monday, while in some other countries it is on Shrove Tuesday. German schools are usually closed on the day, and workers often have the day off. Parades are held, with floats of a satirical nature that lampoon politicians often being made. Dressing up in costumes, dancing, and drinking are also common. In the Rhineland of Germany, that day is part of Fasching, which is the Feast of Fools. There are parades, marching, satirical floats, and merrymaking.

SU assistant Adrian Autry told Marek Dolezaj: ‘The second half is your time’ (PS; Waters)

At halftime of Syracuse’s game against Georgia Tech on Saturday, Marek Dolezaj was frustrated with himself.

The junior forward had played just 11 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. His absence was a major factor in Georgia Tech’s 38-27 advantage.

Fouls had been a problem for Dolezaj of late. The Syracuse coaches had cautioned him against silly, meaningless fouls. But there was again, sitting on the bench and watching as his teammates struggled.

“I think I could’ve helped the team,’’ Dolezaj said. “I wanted to be in, but I had three fouls.’’

Before Dolezaj returned to the court for the second half, Syracuse’s associate head coach Adrian Autry grabbed him.

“Stay positive,’’ Autry said. “Stick with it. The second half is your time.’’

Autry’s words of encouragement proved prophetic as Dolezaj led Syracuse’s second-half comeback for a 79-72 win over Georgia Tech in front of 26,661 fans at the Carrier Dome.

Dolezaj scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half, making all four of his field-goal attempts and going 8-for-8 at the foul line after halftime.

“When he plays like this,’’ SU coach Jim Boeheim said, “we’re a different team.’’

Syracuse rallies to defeat Georgia Tech 79-72 | The NewsHouse (thenewshouse.com; Trivelpiece)

Syracuse beat Georgia Tech 79-72 on Saturday afternoon in the Carrier dome with a second-half surge of offense and defense.

“I thought we made a lot of mistakes in the first half,” said SU head coach Jim Boeheim. “We had a lot of bad turnovers and we didn’t come out on the three-point shooters twice.

And, in addition to that, the team looked sluggish. Marek Dolezaj had three fouls and Quincy Guerrier had four fouls. Georgia Tech’s Moses Wright had 17 points and the Orange trailed by eleven by the end of the first half.

But the second half was all Syracuse. They went on a 7-0 run to start the second 20 minutes and kept the momentum from there.

“In the second half, we went with the five guys who played the best and most consistent defense,” Boeheim said. “Having those guys at the end gave us a chance to win the game.”

The defense also seemed to spark the offense.

“We shot 64 percent in the second half,” Boeheim said. “We had better movement and took better shots. All five of our guys were tremendous.”

With 10:29 to go in the second half, Dolezaj made a jumper, the Yellow Jackets turned it over and Hughes sank a floater to tie the game. Just about a minute later, Hughes made a free throw to give the Orange the lead that they kept throughout the rest of the game.

ACC Basketball Quick Recap: Notre Dame wipes out Miami 87-71 (onefootdown.com; Vowles)

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish made it to .500 in ACC play by taking out the Miami-Florida Hurricanes 87-71 in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the score was when the buzzer went off and 14 three point shots were in the scorebook.

The Irish got off to somewhat of a slow start to the game, and was only 1-13 at one point from the field. Notre Dame went down 19-14 to the Canes as Keith Stone got hot from behind the three point line. That little slump didn’t last long as the Irish took off like a rocket with a 30-10 run to finish out the first half. T.J. Gibbs had 14 points at the break and John Mooney was right with him with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

The second half saw the same consistency, and the Irish went on some solid runs to go up 26 points late in the game. That consistency from Notre Dame produced a 47% shooting percentage from the field and 45% shooting percentage from three point land.

When it was all said and done, Gibbs and Mooney both had 19 points and John’s 12 rebounds gave him another double double. The Irish also got big play off the bench from Dane Goodwin as he added 14 points to the total. At one point it looked like Prentiss Hubb was having an off night, and even though that was mostly true, he still cashed in 15 points of his own along with 10 assists for his own double double.

Green Beer Sunday: Thousands gather to celebrate the start of the St. Patrick’s Day season (photos) (PS; Miller)

Thousands of partiers gathered Sunday on Syracuse’s Tipperary Hill to celebrate what’s become our own mini Mardi Gras. As soon as Peter Coleman drew the first pint of green Coors Light from the tanker truck outside his Irish pub, the St. Patrick’s Day holiday season in Central New York had officially begun.

Streets in the West Side neighborhood started filling up at about 11 a.m. as people jockeyed for a spot to watch the 10-minute parade. Irish dancers and bagpipers followed grand marshals David Hoyne and Chow Downey and Miss Green Beer 2020 Meghan Price Cass along Tompkins Street from the upside-down traffic light to Coleman’s.

Once the tanker arrived, the cheering crowd gathered to watch Coleman pour the ceremonial first pints of green beer. The party then spilled into his pub and into the adjacent parking lot.

By 2 p.m., the temperature had reached 50 degrees and the lines to get into Coleman’s stretched for three blocks, longer than the parade itself.
