NATIONAL-SLOPPY-JOE-DAY-%E2%80%93-March-18.png

Welcome to National Sloppy Joe Day!

No matter how you make this hot sandwich, on March 18th, celebrate National Sloppy Joe Day.

The Sloppy Joe is one of America’s all-time favorite hot sandwiches. Its base ingredient is often ground beef. However, others use turkey and buffalo, too. The other elements give it its flavor, though. Onions, tomato sauce, brown sugar, cola or maple syrup to sweeten it and seasonings to spice it – and of course, any secret ingredient families may add over the years. All of it is served up on a hamburger bun or roll. And is it ever sloppy! Be sure to grab more than one napkin!

Who Created The Sloppy Joe

There are different claims to the origin of the sloppy Joe. In Havana, Cuba, in the 1930s, there was a genuine bartender who gained popularity with vacationers who went by the name of Sloppy Joe. He earned his name for his less than enthusiastic way of cleaning the bar. He was, however, an attentive bartender, and the bar was a hot spot for the jet set.

However, no mention is found in papers from the era of a hot sandwich on the menu matching the description of a Sloppy Joe, and the man of the same name retired to Spain in 1933.

Syracuse Basketball: Top 3 things Orange fans want to see in 2020 (itlh; Arrigo)

With the 2019 Syracuse basketball season over it’s time to look ahead. Here are the top 3 things we want to see next season from the Orange.

Syracuse basketball fans likely set their relationship status to complicated this week on social media.

On one hand, the Orange ended the season on a positive note by pounding a Roy Williams led North Carolina team by nearly 30 points.

While on the other hand, Syracuse had some great momentum heading to the next round of the ACC Tournament and this season will forever be a series of ‘what ifs’.

That, of course, all transpired due to the novel coronavirus outbreak that has taken over our daily lives. Since that’s the case, we decided to look ahead to the 2020-21 season. Here are the top three things Orange fans should want to see next year.

3. Move Jesse Edwards into the starting lineup.

Bourama Sidibe had a great finish to the season, but let’s not forget about all the struggles he had throughout the year. The middle of the 2-3 zone was weaker than ever when it comes to rebounding and making shots inside the lane difficult.

Meanwhile, Jesse Edwards showed spurts where it seemed like he can be a real force in the middle of the zone. Edwards is bigger and stronger than Sidibe, and now that he will have a whole offseason to work on his low post game and rebounding. Quite frankly he could perform better as the starting center than Sidibe.

‘ESPN Syracuse’ Pulls SU-Centric Shows Following Sports Cancellations. (insiderradio.com)

With the lack of live sports and the storylines that accompany the games each week, Galaxy Media’s “ESPN Syracuse” (WSGO/1440 and WTLA/1200) has temporarily pulled its Syracuse University-centric programs, replacing them in the lineup with national ESPN Radio programming.

Temporarily pulled from the lineup are “Centers of the Attention,” which features hosts Seth Everett with former Syracuse center Danny Schayes (10-11am); followed by the 11am-12pm slot hosted by OM Paulie Scibilia with former Syracuse centers Etan Thomas and Roosevelt. Also sidelined are “Orange Nation,” hosted by Steve Infanti and Seth Goldberg (12-2pm); and “Voice of the Orange” with Matt Park and Brian Higgins (2-3pm).

“We have always expanded and contracted our ESPN Syracuse local shows around the SU football, basketball and lacrosse seasons which typically last through April and occasionally May,” President/CEO Ed Levine tells Inside Radio. “This year due to the coronavirus the season(s) ended abruptly so we followed our usual procedure and went to ESPN Audio and the national shows.” The local shows are set to return in August ahead of the Syracuse University football season.

Two local afternoon programs remain on air, “The Sports Zila Show” (3-4pm), which originates from ESPN Utica (WTLB/1310 and WRNY/1350), and “On the Block” with Brent Axe, which airs weekdays from 4-6pm.

“So many people are having to stay home from work or school or college, and they still want to be entertained and take their minds off this,” Axe told Syracuse.com. “While still keeping them updated on all this, I can serve as a distraction.”

Axe was a keynote speaker at the recent reunion of Syracuse University’s WJPZ-FM (89.1) where he talked about his show planning strategy, which uses the POKE scale – Passion, Opinion, Knowledge and Entertainment.

Axe spent some additional time discussing his show-prep plan with fellow Syracuse University graduate Jay Nachlis, Associate Consultant/Marketing Director at Coleman Insights, who wrote about it in the research firm’s “Tuesday’s With Coleman” blog.

Syracuse University closes dining halls, gyms as NY enforces social distancing (DO; Hippensteel)

Syracuse University will close all dining halls and fitness centers Monday night to comply with statewide social distancing measures implemented amid the coronavirus pandemic.

New York state will limit crowd capacity to 50 people starting at 8 p.m. tonight, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday. Gyms, movie theatres, and casinos will also be closed, while restaurants and bars will be limited to takeout and delivery services, he said.

“Our primary goal is to slow the spread of coronavirus so that the wave doesn’t crash our healthcare system,” Cuomo said on Twitter. “Social distancing is the best way to do that.”

The novel coronavirus causes COVID-19, a respiratory disease that has spread to at least 143 countries, infected at least 179,000 and killed over 7,000. There are currently 950 confirmed cases of the virus in New York state, and 6 people have died. Onondaga County confirmed two cases of the virus Monday.

Cuomo’s order poses urgent challenges to students living in SU housing, said Mike Haynie, vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and innovation, in an SU News release. The university will provide a takeout option at dining halls to provide for students who need to remain on campus over spring break, he said.

“Given this news, we urge those students remaining in University housing who can depart campus for home to consider doing so as soon as possible,” Haynie said.

Coronavirus impact: Onondaga County executive shuts down Destiny USA (PS; Knauss)

Destiny USA and other malls in Onondaga County must close as of 5 p.m. today to help stop the spread of coronavirus, under an executive order from County Executive Ryan McMahon.

The malls will be closed indefinitely, said Justin Sayles, speaking for McMahon.

McMahon’s order also covers the struggling ShoppingTown and Great Northern malls, but shutting down Destiny USA will have an exponentially bigger impact.

Destiny is the largest mall in New York and the sixth largest in the country. It draws 26 million visitors a year, or an average of 70,000 a day, and employs 5,000 people, according to owner Pyramid Cos.

The mall is a major source of sales tax revenue for Syracuse and Onondaga County.

McMahon ordered the malls closed to help stem the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the highly contagious coronavirus. He discussed the move Tuesday with executives from Destiny USA before signing the order this morning, Sayles said.

Onondaga County has reported two confirmed cases of COVID-19, but officials expect many more. McMahon and other public officials have urged people to avoid gatherings to keep the disease from spreading so fast that it overwhelms local hospitals.

Article form Arrigo - Edwards is stronger than Sidibe? Really - WOW - did he even see a single game Edwards played in? Edwards is the physically weakest man on the roster. He does have huge upside. But to think a glancing look didn't push him around this year is amazing. With some strength and at this point any would be an asset - he could be fantastic.
