Welcome to Bugs Bunny Day!

On April 30, 1938, a cartoon character known as "Happy Rabbit" made his debut in a short Warner Bros. cartoon titled "Porky's Hare Hunt." He was the prototype for Bugs Bunny, having a similar personality, but looking a bit different. It is on the anniversary of the release of this short film that we celebrate Bugs Bunny Day.

Bugs Bunny is an anthropomorphic gray hare with a relaxed and passive personality—but he is also a trickster. He became a cultural icon and is best known for starring in Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, short films that were made by Warner Bros. from the 1930s through the 1960s. He appeared in many other formats, such as feature films, comic books, and musical records. He has appeared in more films than any other cartoon character, and TV Guide listed him as the greatest cartoon character of all time. In 1997, he became the first cartoon character to appear on a postage stamp. He even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The name "Bugs" or "Bugsy" means crazy or loopy and was used as a nickname in the first half of the twentieth century. For example, mobster Benjamin Siegel is best known as Bugsy Siegel. Today the name survives in phrases such as "You're bugging me," and in Bugs Bunny.

Baldwinsville star, SU basketball recruit Starling earns a new offer (PS; Curtis)

Baldwinsville sophomore J.J. Starling has received a scholarship offer to play basketball at Providence College, he said Wednesday afternoon.

Providence is the latest school to offer Starling, joining a list six schools, including Syracuse, Washington, Alabama, St. John’s and Siena. Ohio State is also showing interest.

“It just means I’m proving myself for right now, but I still have a lot of work to do,” Starling said.

Starling was taking a nap when his mother woke him up around 3:43 p.m., to call Providence assistant coach Brian Blaney. What he thought was going to be a casual conversation about his potential as an athlete quickly turned into a formal offer to play for the Friars.

Starling, a 6-foot-4 guard, said Providence’s initial interest was communicated through his AAU Albany City Rocks coach Jim Hart.

Starling, who turned 16 in March, said he hasn’t ranked any schools yet because he still has plenty of time to make a decision, but he’s excited about picking up another scholarship offer, this from a Big East school.

Starling is coming off an historic season at Baldwinsville as he crossed the 1,000-point milestone and broke B’Ville’s career scoring record.

Starling averaged 29 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals per game while connecting on 100 3-pointers this season. He also earned first-team honors on the 2019-20 All-CNY boys basketball team.

Earlier this month, Starling said it’s likely he will leave Baldwinsville’s Baker High School for a prep school by next school year. However, his final decision will ultimately be made with his family toward the end of the summer.

Our Favorite Syracuse Players (DBR; King)

The other day our friends at Troy Nunes Is A Magician did a list of Duke players they were more or less okay with. It was a pretty cool idea so we thought we’d return the favor with our favorite Orange players.

So here goes.

  1. Pearl Washington. He never really made it big in the NBA but in college? He was magical. As much as anyone, he laid the groundwork for the old Big East.
  2. Tyler Ennis. He was only at Syracuse for one season but the guy was stunning. He understood the game and knew how to win. We loved him. Should’ve listened to Jim Boeheim though when he said he wasn’t ready for the NBA. Boeheim was right.
  3. Rony Seikaly. He was a relative early European/NCAA player. He wasn’t great but he had style and seemed cool.
  4. Carmelo Anthony. A freshman led Syracuse to a title? That’s pretty great by any standard plus he did well with the US national team.
  5. Dave Bing. He was a bit before our time but we admired his NBA career and his character. He just always seemed like a really good guy and very worthy of respect.

Chris Carlson from Syracuse.com joins to discuss that and the latest with the Dome construction and how SU athletics is adapting to the coronavirus shutdown.

SU's Top 21 Athletes of the 21st Century: 5. Knight and 4. Sykes (spectrumlocalnews.com; Staff)

After four weeks the top five is here. The five athletes that appear the rest of the way are some of the best to ever play at Syracuse - not just in the 21st century.

5. Justyn Knight – SU Track & Field, Cross Country (2014-18)

Syracuse has plenty of storied athletes that have called The Hill home. But you can make a case that none were as decorated as Justyn Knight.

You name it, Knight has done it.

ACC Championship… check.

All-American… check.

Team National Championship… check

Individual National championship… check.

Before we completely list Knight’s resume, which would take all day, perhaps the most impressive thing Justyn accomplished during his four years at Syracuse was he made the community pay attention to the sports of cross country and track & field. We’ve talked about the importance Daryl Gross put on the success of non-revenue Olympic sports at SU, and Knight’s accomplishment embody that.

CNY Regional Market season opener: Higher rents, social distancing and more (PS; Cazentre)

The Central New York Regional Market opens its busiest season Saturday with increased rents for vendors and a continued push to ensure that social distancing and other precautions are followed during the coronavirus pandemic.

The increased rents will add up to $275 to the cost of the most expensive stalls for the summer/fall “growing” season, though many vendors will see a smaller increase, said market director Amanda Vitale. The market primarily rents space to farmers and food and beverage distributors and manufacturers, but also to dealers in other “flea market” style goods.

The market has about 450 stalls available for the summer/fall season, which runs from May to October. Vitale said the first weeks of the summer/fall season are typically slower than they will get later, and she has not yet noticed a significant drop in the number of vendors.

Does anyone have the clip where Bugs sees a diploma on the wall in the doctor's office and says, "Syracuse? That's a basketball school."
