Welcome to International No Diet Day!

International No Diet Day is dedicated to body acceptance and focuses on body shape diversity and fat acceptance. Mary Evans Young had dealt with anorexia nervosa and had been bullied for being fat at a young age. In adulthood, she began working to help others accept their bodies. After reading about a teenager who had hanged herself because of her weight, and after watching a television program about three women who had undergone stomach stapling, Young decided to create International No Diet Day. She introduced it in the United Kingdom in 1992. The first year it was just a small gathering of women having a picnic and wearing stickers that said "Ditch That Diet." Spurred on by feminist groups, by the following year it had spread and was celebrated around the world.

Syracuse.com readers take over weekly video chat with Jimmy and Buddy Boeheim (PS; Waters)

We hope that you have been enjoying our series of weekly video chats with Jimmy and Buddy Boeheim.

We explored many fun topics with the brothers, including their personal preferences on things like deep dish or thin crust pizza. Last week, we brought in their sister, Jamie, to find out which of her brothers is the best cook, the cleanest and the most likely to become a basketball coach.

This week, we turned the chat over to our readers. We asked followers on our Orange Sports Fans page on Facebook to send in any questions that they had for Jimmy and Buddy.

We got a great response. If you sent in a question, you can see if we used it and what their answer was.

Boeheim’s Army adds a shooter: TBT team now has 5 players (PS; Ditota)

The addition of Demetris Nichols to the Boeheim’s Army roster provides the team with a dependable shooter and scorer for The Basketball Tournament.

Nichols, 35, also adds experience and fits the emerging team profile of players who can convert 3-point shots and play multiple positions.

The former Syracuse basketball forward, a leading scorer on previous iterations of Boeheim’s Army, could not play last summer because of torn ankle ligaments. Nichols termed the nagging problem “probably the worst injury” in his lengthy basketball career. Surgery at the end of last summer addressed the issue. Nichols described it as “reconstructive ankle surgery” that took longer than expected to heal.

Griffin signs Letter of Intent with Syracuse University basketball (localsyr.com)

Alan Griffin has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to enroll and play basketball at Syracuse. Griffin, a transfer from Illinois, has two years of eligibility remaining.

A 6-5 swingman, Griffin played two seasons with the Illini. He saw action in 30 contests as a freshman, averaging 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. In his sophomore campaign, he averaged 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds over 28 games. He connected on 47 3-pointers and his 3-point percentage (.416) was the best mark on the squad.

A native of Ossining, N.Y., Griffin was a scholastic standout at Archbishop Stepinac High School. He led the Crusaders to an 27-5 overall record, a league title and the New York State Federation Championship. He was a first team All-Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) honoree as a senior after averaging 19.2 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He was coached by Pat Massaroni.

It’s early in the Steve Forbes era, but already Wake Forest has a couple victories. So far, the Demon Deacons have retained several key players, led by forward Isaiah Mucius. A rising junior, Mucius will team back up with two sophomore frontcourt contributors — center Ody Oguama and forward Ismael Massoud.

Late last week, Oguama entered the transfer portal, but left the door open for a return. Oguama wasn’t in the portal for long: Forbes told Les Johns of Demon Deacon Digest that the 6-foot-9 Oguama will be back for his sophomore season. Forbes also mentioned that Massoud will return, too.

As a freshman, Oguama played in 31 games (24 starts) and averaged 2.9 points and 3.9 rebounds. Oguama is an asset on the offensive glass: 11.7 percent offensive rebound rate. According to Synergy Sports, Oguama shot 57.7 percent on put-back attempts this season, too.

One of the top college basketball officials in the country is leaving the ACC, and he leaves a void not easily filled. Three years after he reached the pinnacle of his career by refereeing the national championship game between North Carolina and Gonzaga, Mike Eades is hanging up his whistle to become officiating supervisor for the Southeastern Conference.

“Mike Eades gets replaced with a staff,” ACC supervisor Bryan Kersey said Tuesday. “He doesn’t get replaced by one person.”

Kersey knows all too well what that’s like. When he retired as an official to take the ACC job in 2016, he immediately had to replace one of the conference’s best referees: himself. Eades, who at age 56 has worked three Final Fours and six ACC title games, is still at the top of the game, as Kersey was at age 53, coming off a Final Four.

ACC Roundup - Louisville Gets The Bill (DBR; King)

Louisville heard from the NCAA Monday about the misdeeds under former coach Rick Pitino and it went about as well as you might expect.

There was one level-one violation and three level-twos.

The level one, the most serious, is about Brian Bowen and how Louisville and Adidas managed his recruitment.

According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, “[t]he level-two violations allege more impermissible contact and transportation with the recruit and those around him, and failure by coaches, including former head coach Rick Pitino, to promote an atmosphere of compliance.“

In the modern post-UNC scandal fashion, Louisville is going to be aggressive with the NCAA.

Speaking of UNC, the Tar Heel athletic department received its largest gift ever, big enough for the school to rename the football field the Chris Smith Field.

College Basketball Conference Power Rankings: Why the Big Ten was the best league in the nation (cbssports.com; Cobb)

Anecdotally, most agree the Big Ten stood out as the best conference in college basketball in the 2019-20 season as the league was on track to send 10 teams to the NCAA Tournament and placed 12 of its 14 teams in the top 60 of the final NET ranking.

More

  • Pac-12 is most improved conference
But data-based breakdowns paint differing pictures of which league was the best in college hoops this season. After all, there were four leagues that finished with more teams in the top-15 of the NET than the Big Ten.

So while it may be clear that the Big Ten was the nation's deepest league, was it truly the best? We break it down here in our postseason conference ranking.

Draft prospects were taken from the latest CBS Sports NBA Big Board, which features the top 75 prospects for the 2020 NBA Draft. Projected NCAA Tournament bids were taken from the final 2020 bracket projection from CBS Sports Bracketology Expert Jerry Palm.

1. Big Ten

The case for the Big Ten as college basketball's best conference in 2019-20 was its depth. With 10 teams projected to make the NCAA Tournament field, the league was on track to send a higher percentage of its squads to the Big Dance than any other conference. Plus, its projected NCAA Tournament squads went 4-1 against the Big East's trio of co-champions during the regular season, which suggests it was better than its top competitor for conference supremacy in NCAA hoops.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Non-conference winning percentage: 73.1% (3rd)
  • Average NET ranking: 51.4 (t-2nd)
  • Average NET ranking excluding bottom two teams: 29.7 (2nd)
  • Projected NCAA Tournament bids: 10 (1st)
  • Top 75 NBA Draft prospects: 7 (t-4th)
The case against the league was that it did not have an obvious national title contender as it ended the season without any teams projected as No. 1 or No. 2 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Only Michigan State advanced to the Elite Eight in the SportsLine simulation of the bracket.

Cows get loose from trailer on New York State Thruway in Salina (video) (PS; Libonati)

At least three cows got loose from a trailer on the New York State Thruway and forced New York State Police and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office to round up the cows.

The cows were reported to be loose to Onondaga County 911 dispatch at about 7:15 p.m., according to dispatch logs.

They were initially reported to be on the on-ramp from Electronics Parkway to the Thruway, according to scanner reports.

“I don’t believe they’ve passed through the toll booths yet,” a dispatcher said.

The cows eventually made their way near the Homewood Suites on Elwood Davis Drive, where the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police tried to wrangle the cows.
