Welcome to National Tourism Day!

Mark Twain once wrote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." Tourism gives people new experiences, enriches their lives in countless ways, helps businesses, and bolsters the economy. National Tourism Day takes place during National Travel and Tourism Week, which occurs during the first full week of May. Congress passed a resolution in 1983, a proclamation was signed by Ronald Reagan the following year, and the week was first celebrated that May. At the time it took place later in the month. During the week, travel and tourism professionals come together to celebrate the benefits of tourism. On National Tourism Day, some tourist sites and municipalities promote their location, and sometimes they hold special events. Those who enjoy travel and tourism may find an event to attend, do some traveling and touring, or plan a place to travel to on the day.
Will Illinois transfer Alan Griffin be eligible to play for SU next season? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; Waters)

We have no idea when sports, particularly basketball, will return.

The coronavirus has shut down so much of society, including the NCAA Tournament and the NBA season. The NBA is still hoping to hold some form of a playoff.

Other events like the summer AAU circuit and The Basketball Tournament remain in limbo.

But we still have so much to talk about with regards to basketball. I appreciate each and every one of the emails for Mike’s Mailbox that I’ve been receiving from you. Please keep them coming!

Top performances by Syracuse basketball recruit Alan Griffin in 2019-20 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball officially welcomes Illinois transfer Alan Griffin to the program. As such, let’s take a look at his best games during the past season.

Alan Griffin, a talented 6-foot-5 sophomore wing who has transferred from Illinois to Syracuse basketball, signed his national letter of intent with the Orange, according to a cuse.com press release.

Griffin, who can suit up at either shooting guard or small forward, has two years of eligibility remaining. Hopefully, he will have the ability to officially compete in the upcoming campaign, but that remains unclear due to the NCAA fumbling around the hotly debated transfer issue.

If Griffin can step on the court for actual contests in 2020-21, he would nicely slide in to Elijah Hughes’ spot. Griffin would also make for a strong 6th man, if rising sophomore Quincy Guerrier or someone different moves into the starting rotation.

There is a lot to like about Griffin. He’s a highly efficient scorer and an excellent rebounder. In 2019-20, he averaged a modest 18.1 minutes per affair, yet he collected 8.9 points and 4.5 boards a game while connecting on 48.3 percent from the field, 86.1 percent from the charity stripe, and 41.6 percent from beyond the arc.

What follows are a handful of Griffin’s top scoring outputs from his most-recent stanza with the Fighting Illini, a crew that finished fourth in the rugged Big Ten Conference and ranked in the top 25 of both major polls.

In a win on Feb. 27 at Northwestern, Griffin notched 24 points in only 20 minutes, as he went 9-of-11 from the field and a ridiculous 6-of-8 from deep.

Syracuse Basketball: Looking ahead to next season (itlh; Peckham)

Syracuse basketball will be looking ahead to next season and who will contribute in an off-season where they lost some players to transfers and the NBA.

The Syracuse basketball season ended early this past season after the ACC Tournament got canceled due to the novel coronavirus spreading around the world. Syracuse put together their best effort of the season in the last game, when they dominated the North Carolina Tar Heels from start to finish.

Syracuse had a roller-coaster type of season with all of the close games and losing a combined six games by a total of 18 points. This team was very young, with no seniors on the roster and starting a freshman at the point guard position, which was going to take some time.

After the recent events with the conference tournaments and March Madness being canceled, there has been many players entering the transfer portal, and some players are declaring for the NBA Draft. Syracuse will have a slightly different roster next season, but their core players will be returning.

SU's Top 21 Athletes of the 21st Century: No.1 Carmelo Anthony (spectrumlocalnews.com; Staff)

After five weeks the countdown has reached its peak. Number one was never really in question, and it certainly wasn’t hard for fans of Syracuse to figure out. That’s how much of slam dunk Melo is when thinking back on SU-athletics during the 21st century.
Happy 35th birthday to Syracuse national champion, Carmelo Anthony.

One of the best freshman to ever do it. Where does the time go?

1. Carmelo Anthony – SU Men’s Basketball (2002-03)

Mark and Erik both knew at the start Anthony was going atop of their list when starting this countdown. Here is their chance to tell you why:

Mark’s Take on Melo

When you’re compiling a list of the “Top Anything” of a certain era, you always start with No. 1 and work your way down. And the top spot is usually the easiest to nail down, and such is the case with our.

Without a doubt, hands down, no question about it, the No. 1 athlete of this century, and arguably any century at Syracuse, is none other than Carmelo Kyan Anthony. Just think how much more of a no-brainer it would be had he fulfilled his original plan to spend two to three seasons at Syracuse!

The fact he only spent one season at SU is immaterial, because in that one season he accomplished something no other basketball player ever had on The Hill. He led the Orangemen to a national championship, the only one in school history, while also re-writing the record book along the way.

Clemson basketball has another player enter NCAA transfer portal (postandcourier.com; Needelman)

Clemson center Trey Jemison has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal, coach Brad Brownell confirmed Wednesday afternoon in a statement.

The 7-foot, 256-pound Jemison averaged 1.7 points and two rebounds in 8.4 minutes per game as a sophomore in 2019-20.

“I’d like to thank Trey for his hard work and contributions to our program over the last two seasons,” Brownell said. “We wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Jemison, a Birmingham, Ala., native, was a 4-star recruit and the No. 1 player in the state of Alabama for the class of 2018, per ESPN.

Six Days In, New Wake Coach Steve Forbes Gets Kentucky Fans Riled Up (DBR; King)

It didn't take long for folks to realize that new Wake Forest coach Steve Forbes is pretty different from his predecessor Danny Manning.

If you didn’t get it from his spiking his ugly Covid-19 mask after new boss Wake Forest A.D. John Currie tossed him his whistle and, metaphorically the keys to the program, you should have after his comments about Wake Forest and Kentucky Tuesday.

Forbes was interviewed on a radio show and spoke about Demon Deacons center Olivier Sarr, who is considering transferring and who, not surprisingly, has been courted not just by the Kentucky coaching staff but by Big Blue Nation online as well.

Forbes just doesn’t care. He said something to Sarr and then repeated it on the interview. We have seen it mentioned several times online but haven’t seen the exact quote. However, this should be close enough to make the point: “why would you want to go to Wake Forest for three years and then graduate from a place like Kentucky?”

As you can imagine, that has not gone over well with BBN. Matt Jones, of Kentucky Sports Radio, posted this snarky response, which is Forbes’ intro video at Wake Forest and this text: “This is the dude talking trash about Kentucky. This dude...”

BUZZ: SU alum's RoboCop appears in new ‘Mortal Kombat’ video game (PS; Gerbert)

Finish him! RoboCop appears in the new “Mortal Kombat” video game, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced Wednesday. An expansion of “Mortal Kombat 11″ called “Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath” will be released May 26 with a new story campaign and playable characters, including Detroit’s finest cybernetic police officer. Syracuse University alumnus Peter Weller, who starred in the original “RoboCop” film and the 1990 sequel “RoboCop 2," lends both his likeness and voice to the new game, which also reportedly features classic characters (including Ronda Rousey as Sonya Blade) and special guests like Terminator, Spawn and the Joker. Note: Game contains violence and strong language not suitable for younger audiences.

Weller, whose credits also include “Star Trek Into Darkness," “24,” “Naked Lunch,” “Sons of Anarchy” and “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th Dimension," graduated from Syracuse University in 2004 with a master’s degree in Renaissance Art History and taught a course at SU’s school of Visual and Performing Arts on Hollywood and the Roman Empire while continuing his acting career. The 72-year-old actor has also revisited his “RoboCop” character Alex Murphy several times, including in a KFC commercial last year.
