Welcome to Chimborazo Day!

Chimborazo Day celebrates the spot on the Earth that is closest to the moon and farthest from the center of the Earth. Chimborazo is an inactive volcano that is in the Cordillera Occidental range of the Andes Mountains in central Ecuador, and has an elevation of 20,565 feet. Although Chimborazo has a lower elevation than Mt. Everest, because of its spot near the Equator it is the farthest from the Earth’s center and closest to the moon. The Earth is not a perfect sphere, but rather it is an oblate spheroid. The Equatorial diameter is larger than the Polar diameter, and Chimborazo lies close to the former. Being that it lies on this Equatorial bulge, it sticks about a mile and a half farther into space than Mt. Everest.

Syracuse Basketball: Slew of analysts predict Orange for Frank Anselem (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball appears the front-runner to land Frank Anselem, a 2020 four-star center.

Syracuse basketball seems the favorite to secure the services of Frank Anselem, a 2020 four-star center who will reveal his collegiate destination on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-10 Anselem, out of Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif., is deciding between the Orange, Georgia, San Diego State and New Mexico.

By the early evening on Tuesday, at least seven analysts on and another four on the 247Sports Web site had forecast the ‘Cuse as the program that they believe Anselem will pick.

Of course, these prognostications don’t guarantee anything, as Syracuse has gotten deemed the front-runner to win out in recruiting battles in the past, only to ultimately swing and miss on top-flight targets.

Still, that nearly a dozen recruiting experts are predicting the Orange for Anselem is undeniably an encouraging development. Among those to log a projection in the direction of the ‘Cuse are national basketball analyst Corey Evans, national basketball analyst Eric Bossi, 247Sports national recruiting analyst Josh Gershon, and 247Sports director of recruiting Evan Daniels.

Syracuse basketball has a terrific shot at getting 2020 four-star center Frank Anselem.

In early April, media reports indicated that Anselem had cut his list of finalists to three Southeastern Conference members in Alabama, Georgia and LSU.

What are the five best seasons in Syracuse history? - The Juice Online (the juice; McGlynn)

On Wednesday, we ranked the top 10 through 6 best seasons in Syracuse athletics history. Today, we finish our countdown with the top 5 season of all time!

5. 2015 field hockey
Often overlooked, Syracuse field hockey turned in one of the most dominant seasons in the history of the sport. The team lost just one game the entire season in the ACC championship game against UNC. That loss didn’t stop them from rolling through the NCAA tournament, winning every game they played by at least two goals. ‘Cuse would have it’s revenge in a number of ways as well. It took down UConn in the semifinal, who had beaten the Orange in the national championship game the year before. Syracuse completed its dream season by knocking off North Carolina 4-2 in the title game.

4. 1990 men’s lacrosse
Screw the NCAA. This season belongs on this list. The second of Syracuse’s undefeated seasons was wiped out due to a NCAA violation involving Paul Gait, but that doesn’t change what happened on the field in 1990. There is a reason this is considered one of the best team’s in men’s lacrosse history. ‘Cuse dominated en route to its third-straight title. The Orange won their three tournament games by a combined 31 points, including a 21-9 rout in the finals. Syracuse became just the second program in NCAA history to win three championships in a row. That is more than good enough for a top-five spot on this list.

3. 1959 football
In terms of founding the identity of sports success at Syracuse, there might not be a more important season in school history than the 1959 football season. It stands to this day as the only national championship in program history. ‘Cuse took down Texas in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day in 1960. It did so on the back of the “Elmira Express.” Jim Brown is widely regarded as the best college athlete ever, but Ernie Davis definitely gave him a run for his money. He one MVP of that Cotton Bowl game and would go on to be the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy the following year, as if you don’t know all of that. What you might not know is that Syracuse actually had more passing yards in that game than rushing. That was mostly due to Davis’ 87-yard catch and run in the first half. Brown’s legacy alone would have made 44 special, but Davis solidified it’s spot in history.

Lanier Sr. made sure "The Dobber" didn't leave school early - Pickin' Splinters (pickinsplinters.com; Maggio)

When the son he called a “mama’s boy” became one of basketball’s greatest centers, Robert Lanier Sr. imparted a nugget of off-court advice.

“I told (Bob) never to refuse to give a kid an autograph,” Lanier Sr. told La Crosse Tribune sportswriter Jay Loeffler in 1980. “Once during an autograph session there were about 300 kids waiting for an autograph. His secretary told him to sign a piece of paper and she would run them off a copier. He said no way. Most players wouldn’t do that.”

It’s ironic, then, that the signature Bob Sr. implored Bob Jr. to turn down changed St. Bonaventure basketball history.

Bona’s designs on a postseason appearance in the 1968-69 season were dashed by NCAA recruiting sanctions resulting from the pursuit of eventual South Carolina commit Tom Riker. The team started 3-5, marked by a four-game losing streak. SBU regrouped by winning 14 of its last 16 games, routing No. 18 Marquette by 22 in New York and dispatching Canisius by 27 at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium during that run.

Bonaventure was convinced that with core players like Lanier, Dale Tepas and Billy Kalbaugh returning for 1969-70, it could make a national championship run. The Brown Indians had competition, however, in the form of a $1.2 million offer for Lanier to forgo his final year of eligibility and go pro.

Shop Local: Thrift Shops reopen, things to know (PS; Dellinger)

We all like to save a little money, and one way to do that is by frequenting a thrift store. For some folks, a trip to the thrift store is a regular occurrence and bargain hunting is an avocation. But that all stopped when coronavirus required statewide shutdowns of retail stores that did not sell grocery items.

The Rescue Mission, Goodwill, and The Salvation Army were forced to close down their retail stores in March, which meant layoffs for some and put a stop to their receiving donations of goods. Many donation sites struggled as people continued to leave things in front of their doors or on loading docks and responded by having to put caution tape or fences around donation sites to discourage dumping.
