Welcome to Ballpoint Pen Day!

On June 10th of 1943, Hungarian brothers Laszlo and Gyorgy Biro walked into a European patent office to declare ownership of their new writing pen design. From this day on, countless ballpoint pens have been enjoyed by writers around the world, and this date has grown into the holiday National Ballpoint Pen Day to celebrate the achievements of these ingenious brothers.

While the British government quickly swooped in and bought the rights to the newly-patented pens, today’s ballpoint pens are used the world over and continue to represent an affordable and reliable means for writing on any standard surface. There’s even more to the story! Read about who invented the ballpoint pen.

Recent commits show Syracuse basketball finally over NCAA violations - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

When the NCAA sanctioned Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse basketball program back in 2015, these were the results they had in mind.

Prior to the NCAA dropping the hammer on the Orange, the program was at one of the peaks of its program history. In 2014, Syracuse won its first 25 games of the season en route to the No. 1 ranking in the country in what was its first season in the ACC.

Then in March of 2015, the NCAA announced its punishment and dropped Syracuse into a malaise that it is still recovering from. The highlights of the sanctions included:

  • Five years of probation.
  • Vacation of 101 wins.
  • A one-year postseason ban.
  • Boeheim suspended for nine games.
  • A loss of eight combined scholarships from 2015–16 to 2018–19.
  • Two years of recruiting restrictions, limiting the amount of off-campus recruiting by coaches from all four down to only two.

SU basketball 2022 recruiting targets appear on ESPN top 60 list (PS; Curtis)

A handful of Syracuse basketball targets earned spots on ESPN’s latest list of the top-60 basketball recruits in the country for the class of 2022.

Among the five targets who’ve received scholarships, Dior Johnson is the only player to commit to the Orange, making his decision in February.

The five-star guard is ranked No. 12 — one spot higher than last year’s mark and the highest overall among SU recruits. Johnson will play his junior and senior seasons at national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy.

Zion Cruz, a five-star guard from Jersey City, N.J., is ranked No. 17 and will transfer with Johnson to Oak Hill next season to form a highly potent offensive backcourt. Cruz and Johnson were spotted sitting together at the Carrier Dome earlier this year when Syracuse faced Duke.

Baldwinsville guard J.J. Starling entered the national rankings for the first time, coming in as the 57th-best sophomore in the country and No. 1 in New York.

Starling, a four-star guard, averaged 28.6 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game last season for the Bees. He was also named to the All-CNY boys basketball first team for 2019-20.

Starling has multiple college offers, including Syracuse, Washington, Providence, Alabama, St. John’s and Siena.

Here are the complete rankings of Syracuse basketball recruits for the Class of 2022:

12. Dior Johnson, PG, Lakewood, CA, Oak Hill Academy, 6′2″, 170 pounds, 5-star
17. Zion Cruz, SG, Jersey City, NJ, Oak Hill Academy, 6′2″, 165 pounds, 5-star
40. Chance Westry, SF, Harrisburg, PA, Trinity High School, 6′4″, 175 pounds, 4-star

Syracuse Basketball: Recruiting efforts in the post-Jim Boeheim era (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball recruiting will inevitably change after Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim retires.

There are a lot of positive “sells” that Syracuse basketball possesses when its coaches are making recruiting pitches to prospects, and Jim Boeheim is at the apex of the list.

The team is one of the winningest programs in the sport’s history. It regularly leads NCAA Division I men’s hoops in annual attendance, with marquee games attracting 30,000-plus fans, regardless of the Central New York weather outside.

The Orange competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the premier leagues around the country, with a ton of its encounters every season on some form of regional or national television. The ‘Cuse has top-notch practice and training facilities.

Oh, and Syracuse boasts a Hall of Fame head coach who has captured more than 1,000 conquests (hi, NCAA), advanced to five Final Fours, and cut down the nets in 2003.

That legendary boss, Boeheim, is still going strong, and undoubtedly he’s got at least a few terms left in him roaming the sidelines on the Hill.

However, and I hate to acknowledge this, but at some juncture in the future, Boeheim will wrap up his stellar coaching career, paving the way for one of his current assistants – or another excellent candidate – to lead the Orange. Whom that replacement will ultimately be is a conversation for another day.

Sidibe Determined to Effect Change at SU (spectrumlocalnews.com; Larson)

Last November, the Syracuse basketball team donned warm-up shirts that bore the slogan "#NotAgainSU" in support of a campus-wide movement after racist graffiti showed up in several university buildings. But it was only for one game, the annual home game against Cornell.

Six months later, SU senior Bourama Sidibe finds himself protesting racism again, but this time he's looking to make it last.

"In order for people to understand what's going on, it takes more than one day," he said. "If it was only one day or two days, it would be changed by now, because these things have been going on for a long time."

What You Need To Know
  • Bourama Sidibe is looking to be a leader in promoting race relations on campus next season.
  • The 22-year-old SU senior has only been in America for about five years.
  • Sidibe says last season's one-game show of support for protestors was a "failure" by the basketball team.
  • The Mali native will be one of two seniors on Jim Boeheim's roster next season.
Sidibe, who was born in Africa, says he first experienced racism when he was attending St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, New Jersey. He and a group of teammates drove into an unfamiliar neighborhood, where they were confronted by an unwelcoming resident.
