Welcome to No Orange Clothes Day!

No Orange Clothes Day commemorates the day in 1784 when the wearing of orange was banned in the Netherlands, a country often informally called Holland. Such a thing seems unconscionable today, as orange is now seen as the unofficial color of the Netherlands, and is worn and displayed everywhere. The color has a long and varied history in the country, dating back to the sixteenth century.

Why did orange become associated with the Netherlands? Orange is the color of the Dutch royal family, and its association with them goes back to William of Nassau, who is also known as William the Silent or William of Orange. William became the Prince of Orange in 1544, at the age of eleven, when the principality of Orange—which had previously been a French principality—came under his control.

Syracuse Basketball: Jarace Walker would bring unique skill-set to Orange (itlh; Adler)

Jarace Walker, offered a scholarship by Syracuse basketball on Monday, has “an elite talent level,” one expert says.

Go big or go home may prove the mantra for the Syracuse basketball 2022 class, as the Orange is now vying for top-15 prospect Jarace Walker.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Walker, a rising junior at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., is a five-star small forward who, if he ultimately selected the ‘Cuse, would join five-star point guard and fellow top-15 player Dior Johnson in Syracuse’s 2022 recruiting cycle.

Naturally, the Orange will face stiff competition for Walker, who landed his scholarship offer from Syracuse on Monday, according to his bio on the 247Sports Web site and several recruiting analysts posting on social media.

As we’ve noted on many occasions at this juncture, Johnson has said that he plans to bring more stellar recruits with him to the Hill. Additionally, the Orange recently picked up pledges from 2020 four-star center Frank Anselem and 2021 four-star small forward Benny Williams, so the ‘Cuse possesses some nice recruiting momentum of late.

Per a review of the primary recruiting Web sites, other teams to offer Walker include Maryland, Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Bryant, Howard, Kansas State, and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia Tech.

Syracuse basketball is in the mix for 2022 five-star small forward Jarace Walker.

Across the 2022 class, Walker is ranked No. 6 by 247Sports, No. 8 from the 247Sports Composite, No. 10 on ESPN.com, and No. 11 at . In summation, Syracuse coaches will face an incredible challenge winning the recruiting bout over Walker, but if the Orange prevails, its 2022 class has the makings of an epic one.

Sportscaster U: A roundtable with famous Syracuse... (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)

On March 9, 1980, Bob Costas was preparing to work an NCAA Tournament game between Syracuse and Villanova. Before the game, he completed research and interviews, including one with Jim Boeheim, who was in his fourth season at the helm. During the conversation, Costas says he told Boeheim he had graduated from Syracuse’s journalism school in 1974. The Hall of Fame sportscaster doesn’t remember much else from the interview, but one thing Boeheim said has stuck with him.

“You guys are everywhere.”

It was a reference to the strong pedigree of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, the journalism school at Syracuse. By 1980, numerous big-name sportscasters had graduated from the program: Marv Albert, Marty Glickman and Len Berman, among others. And while Boeheim’s observation came 40 years ago, it continues to ring true today. The school has built on its strong reputation as one of the top communication schools in the country. The level of talent from Syracuse, year over year, is so strong that Syracuse has been dubbed as “Sportscaster U.” Which is why, over the last few weeks, The Athletic spoke with six national sportscasters, from ESPN to Fox Sports to CBS, to discuss what makes the Syracuse broadcasting pipeline so strong, the pandemic’s impact on sports coverage, their favorite calls, their best advice to young sportscasters, how they prepare and more.

What is your favorite broadcast of a Syracuse sporting event?

Bob Costas (MLB Network, Class of 1974): At WAER, as an undergrad, Syracuse was playing Fordham at Manley Field House. It was 1972. Syracuse had no timeouts left with five seconds on the clock. Kenny Charles, who would play in the NBA, makes the first free throw and misses the second for Fordham. Then a walk-on named Chuck Wichman takes off down the floor and throws up a runner. He banks it in and everybody goes nuts when Syracuse wins by a point. Bob Neumeier was doing play-by-play. He got so excited when the ball went in the basket that his voice cracked. Not just a little bit. It went up several octaves. But he had the presence of mind to say, “Chuck which-way-to-the-NIT Wichman.” I didn’t make the call, but I thought that was impressive.

VOTE: “Best SU Team of All-Time” (localsyr.com; poll)

Voting for this week’s bracket challenge will begin Monday at 6 p.m.

https://accsports.com/acc-news/just...adds-more-muscle-with-delaware-grad-transfer/ (accsports.com; Geisinger)

According to a report from Jeff Goodman of Stadium, Virginia Tech basketball has plucked another graduate transfer: Delaware forward Justyn Mutts.

Virginia Tech will be the third and final stop on the collegiate level for Mutts, who started his career at High Point. During the 2017-18 season, Mutts played in 28 games for HPU (19 starts); after which, he transferred to Delaware. As a redshirt sophomore this season, Mutts averaged 12.2 points (53.8 FG%), 8.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game.

The 6-foot-7 Mutts gives the Hokies another inside presence on both ends of the floor. Mutts posted a defensive rebound rate of 22.3 percent this season (No. 129 nationally), per KenPom. Vacillating between the power forward and center positions, Mutts shot 63 percent at the rim this season — with 20 dunks. Mutts shot 48 percent on post-up attempts, too, according to Synergy Sports.

This is a strong win for Virginia Tech in the transfer portal; several other ACC programs, like NC State and Wake Forest, expressed interest in Mutts. Ultimately, though, Mutts picked Virginia Tech over Mississippi State and Houston.

Source: ACC school to play at an HBCU on MLK Day 2021 (hbcugameday.com; Gaither)

The topic of Power Five schools vs. HBCUs has been a hot one over the last few weeks. A viral meme about sending top talent to HBCUs, followed by a declaration by Mikey Williams about being open to play at an HBCU has kept the conversation going throughout this turbulent time.

These contests have been played out in the virtual world, but a new proposal could make it happen in real-time in a setting not seen before.

A source tells HBCU Gameday that one ACC school plans to travel to an HBCU for a basketball game on its campus this year. The game is expected to be announced later this week.

Reporter Jeff Goodman tweeted on Monday that an ACC coach has proposed that all schools in the conference play HBCUs on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 18, 2021) this season.

Of course, HBCUs already play Power Five schools in basketball. Those games usually take place early in the season, on the campus of the larger school for a guarantee AKA “money games.”

Multiple HBCU coaches tell HBCU Gameday that playing Power Fives at their institutions instead of on the road would be worth making the game work on a date that is usually reserved for conference play.

“I don’t really see the point of going to play them at their place for a guarantee on Martin Luther King Day,” Norfolk State coach Robert Jones said. “What’s the point of going to play an ACC school on Martin Luther King Day, for what, unless they’re coming to you?”

Now hosting, that’s a different story. Jones said hosting — for example — the University of Virginia would be a major get for a school like his, even with no guarantee.

Movie Tavern owner details new coronavirus protocols, reopening soon (PS; Herbert)

The nation’s fourth largest owner of movie theaters has announced plans to reopen for business this month with new guidelines due to the coronavirus.

Marcus Theatres, which owns and operates the Movie Tavern in Camillus, will begin reopening June 19 in a handful of locations in Wisconsin, Nebraska and Georgia. Other locations, likely including the Syracuse-area theater, will open where available in the coming weeks; Central New York is expected to begin phase four of reopening, which includes entertainment, as soon as June 26.

According to SlashFilm, Marcus Theatres will only be open four days a week with limited hours of operation at first as they test “enhanced protocols” to limit the spread of Covid-19. Those theaters will only be open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Tuesdays with showtimes listed online.

At first, movies shown will be largely titles released in the past seven months, such as “Sonic the Hedgehog," “The Invisible Man,” “Dolittle,” “Bad Boys for Life,” “Jumanji: The Next Level” and “Knives Out.” Other screenings will include older films like the “Harry Potter” franchise, “Batman Begins,” “Jurassic Park” and “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.”

Many 2020 movie releases have been delayed due to coronavirus, including “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Black Widow,” and the James Bond adventure “No Time to Die.” Disney’s live-action “Mulan” (July 24) and Christoper Nolan’s “Tenet” (July 31) will be the first major new releases since the pandemic begin; AMC Theaters and Regal Cinemas both said they plan to reopen in July in time for those films.
