Welcome to National Apple Strudel Day!
  1. A strudel is a type of layered pastry with a — most often sweet — filling inside, often served with cream. It became well known and gained popularity in the 18th century through the Habsburg Empire.
  2. Strudel is most often associated with Austrian cuisine but is also a traditional pastry in the whole area formerly belonging to the Austro-Hungarian empire.
  3. The oldest Strudel recipe (a Millirahmstrudel) is from 1696, a handwritten recipe at the Viennese City Library, Wiener Stadtbibliothek. The pastry has its origins in the similar Byzantine Empire or Middle Eastern pastries.
  4. Strudel is a loanword in English from German. The word itself derives from the German word Strudel, which in Middle High German literally means “whirlpool” or “eddy”.
  5. In Hungary it is known as rétes, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia as štrudla or savijača, in Slovenia as štrudelj or zavitek, in the Czech Republic as závin or štrúdl, in Romania as ștrudel, and in Slovakia as štrúdľa or závin.

Starling fields calls from Boeheim, Hopkins and dozens more in 1 day (PS; Curtis)

J.J. Starling spent most of his Monday with his eyes glued to his phone.

It was a day full of anticipation and excitement for the Baldwinsville basketball standout as recruiting season for the high school class of 2022 officially opened, allowing college coaches to make contact with recruits.
Starling received a text message around 12:33 a.m., Monday from Bryant College coach Jared Grasso to offer him a scholarship. He concluded the day hearing from more than 18 coaches and picking up additional offers from Wake Forest and UConn.

They join a list that includes Alabama, Marquette, Providence, Siena, St. John’s, Washington and Syracuse, which offered Starling last summer.

“I didn’t go to sleep until like 3 a.m., because I was so excited,” Starling said.

Starling, a 6-foot-4 guard, is ranked No. 57 on ESPN’s top 60 for the class of 2022 and is classified as the No. 1 player in New York.

Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino together at MSG – sort of (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim and his former assistant, Rick Pitino, will both travel to Madison Square Garden on Dec. 19.

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim and Rick Pitino go a long way’s back, and they are each slated to arrive at Madison Square Garden for some hoops contests this December.

But the bummer detail is that they’re not going to face off with one another.

Zach Braziller of the New York Post and Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports tweeted that Pitino’s new team, Iona, will go toe to toe with Stony Brook as part of a doubleheader in the 2020 Gotham Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The other match-up, as we’ve previously reported, is the Orange against Southeastern Conference member LSU. Now, given the novel coronavirus pandemic, it remains uncertain how the 2020-21 basketball campaign will proceed.

Assuming the upcoming stanza does occur, it’s also unclear if these duels in the Big Apple would include fans in the stands or not. Regardless, having Boeheim and Pitino, old-time friends and former Big East Conference rivals, in the same famous arena is pretty darn appetizing.

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim and Rick Pitino have a storied history together.

Pitino, who served as an assistant on Boeheim’s first coaching staff at the ‘Cuse more than four decades ago, captured national championships at Kentucky in 1996 (where he beat SU in the last March Madness game) and Louisville in 2013. He’s also advanced to seven Final Fours.

The 10 best (and 5 worst) recruits at Syracuse (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)

Syracuse has reloaded year after year with plenty of elite players, mostly from driving distance in the Northeast. In terms of sheer talent, there’s been a slight drop-off over the past few seasons, however, with the 247Sports Composite rankings indicating the Orange averaged the 18th-best recruiting class in the country from 2013 to ’16. Since then? The number has fallen to No. 37. There are many reasons for the dip, and some are hard to pinpoint. But there remains little debate that Syracuse has routinely pulled in its fair share of high-profile recruits. Let’s contextualize it.

As Syracuse prepares to welcome another class to campus, here’s a ranking of the top 10 and bottom five signings of the recruiting services era, which dates to 2003, shortly after Carmelo Anthony came to town. Over that span, SU has made 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. The talent is clearly there, but so are the highly rated newcomers who proved to be busts. This was no easy task. (All rankings are per the Recruiting Services Consensus Index.)

1. Donte Greene (2007, No. 8 RSCI)

Green, a power forward, only played one season, but he tops the list because we must honor the significance of his signing. He came as another high-level Syracuse recruit from the DMV, a McDonald’s All-American at Towson Catholic. He had an outstanding freshman season, going for 17.7 points per game on an injury-ravaged team. From deep range, he shot around 40 percent for most of the season. His 620 points are the third-most by a Syracuse freshman, behind only Carmelo Anthony and Lawrence Moten. For Cuse fans, the only downside was that he turned pro and never played in an NCAA Tournament for the Orange. But considering the stellar season he had, he claims the crown as best signing.

2. Michael Carter-Williams (2011, No. 25 RSCI)

The NBA Rookie of the Year in 2014 was a Cuse product who hardly played two years earlier. But after riding the bench as a freshman, MCW ran the point as well as anyone has at Cuse, averaging 11.9 points and 7.3 assists. He played on one of the best Syracuse teams since the title team in ’03, even if the postseason didn’t pan out well. He was a really good passer and defender, and one could argue he’s worth a hard look at No. 1 on this list.

3. Tyler Ennis (2013, No. 23, RSCI)

Former Fizz: Connor Morrissette (SU 2013-2017) – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; podcast)

Former Fizz is a new interview series where we talk with previous Orange Fizz staff writers about Syracuse sports from when they were on campus. Topics include specific players and games, special memories and of course Jim Boeheim throughout the years. You can listen to all of the episodes on the Orange Fizz SoundCloud or orangefizz.net.

On this episode, Connor Morrissette joins the program to take a trip down memory lane. Connor called Syracuse University home from 2013-2017. He remembers Syracuse Football starting 3-0 but then losing the next eight and Syracuse Basketball starting 20-0 but then losing early in the tournament. The interview is below, followed by an abbreviated Q&A from the discussion. We hope you enjoy!

QUESTION: Did you enjoy following SU football or basketball more while you were a student?

ANSWER: By nature I am more of a football-guy. Even though the basketball team was better and the football program wasn’t doing too well, I still liked covering the team and the recruits it brought in.

QUESTION: Who were some of the big recruits Syracuse Football brought in while you were at SU?

ANSWER: Sterling Hofrichter was a big recruit as a punter/kicker. I was also able to interview Kendall Coleman, but I never got to talk to Eric Dungey, which is disappointing.

Boeheim's Army and the TBT field: Is the Syracuse squad the best team? (PS; Ditota)

Boeheim’s Army, said ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg, “is the most talented team in TBT.”

But does that guarantee success in the 2020 version of this summer’s $1 million winner-take-all tournament?

If the past offers any indication it’s this: Teams with versatile offensive players who can make shots, teams that are physically and mentally tough and teams that feature a difficult to discern chemistry win games in The Basketball Tournament.

Syracuse Basketball: Boeheim’s Army seeded right where it should reside (itlh; Adler)

Boeheim’s Army, a crew of former Syracuse basketball stars, earned the No. 3 seed in The Basketball Tournament.

The 24-team bracket of this summer’s The Basketball Tournament (“TBT”) got released on Tuesday, and to no one’s surprise, Boeheim’s Army – a stacked roster of former Syracuse basketball players – received an invite to the $1 million, winner-take-all event.

Since tournament organizers had previously said that more than 120 squads had applied to compete in the 2020 TBT, there existed at least a sliver of uncertainty about the status of Boeheim’s Army in the field.

However, given that Boeheim’s Army has made deep runs in this tourney in the past, I felt pretty comfortable that our beloved boys in Orange would hear their name called on Selection Tuesday (I just made that up now).

In fact, a few days ago, I penned a column in which I prognosticated that Boeheim’s Army should land a top-three seed, along with Carmen’s Crew, the 2019 TBT champion, and four-time tournament victor Overseas Elite.

When it comes to these sorts of fun projections or rampant speculation, I’m often wrong. This time, though, I wasn’t.

The TBT bracket slots Carmen’s Crew, consisting of Ohio State alumni, as the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 seed Overseas Elite, and Boeheim’s Army as the No. 3 seed.

Clemson's Brownell Loves Coaching At Football School (SI; Priester)

The ACC has long been known as the premier conference in college basketball, and for most coaches, trying to win in the league is a difficult task in its own regard.

For Clemson head coach Brad Brownell, not only does he have to try and navigate the competitiveness of the conference year in and year out, he also has the added bonus of attempting to do so at a football school.

As an added bonus, the Tigers are currently one of the nation's best football programs, having won two national titles over the past four years.

"We not only have football. We're pretty good at it down here," Brownell recently told Marcus Wilson on Details of Life. "Football is the king here, as it should be. We've had unbelievable success. It's a lot of fun."

While many coaches might possibly be intimidated by the thought of playing second fiddle to football on campus, Brownell is not. In fact, he sees it as an opportunity and tries to take advantage of the football program's success whenever he can.

A major CNY beer distributor closes, sells brand lines to competitors (PS; Cazentre)

Spirit & Sanzone, one of Central New York’s oldest and largest beer distributors, has closed after selling its lineup of brands to competitors.

The East Syracuse-based distributor, which also dealt in wines, liquors and other beverages, sold the Onondaga and Cortland county rights to most of its brands to Onondaga Beverage Co. of Liverpool. Further to the east, in Utica, Rome and into the Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks, the brand rights were sold to McCraith Beverage of New York Mills in Oneida County.

Spirit & Sanzone, founded 100 years ago, closed its plant and warehouse at 6495 Fly Road in East Syracuse and laid off 64 employees, according to a layoff notice sent to the New York State Department of Labor. The transactions took effect on June 1. It also had a location in Marcy, Oneida County.

Brands that are being transferred to Onondaga Beverage include “mainstream” products from Miller, Genesee and Molson, along with imports like Asahi, Speckled Hen, Paulaner and Warsteiner, and craft brands like 21st Amendment and Uinta.

Upstate New York craft brands transferring to Onondaga Beverage include Three Heads of Rochester, Sackets Harbor Brewing and McKenzie’s Hard Cider near Buffalo.

Several wines, spirits, soda and sparkling water brands are also moving to Onondaga Beverage.

Onondaga Beverage’s acquisition of the new beer lines will boost its share of the local market from 58% to nearly 70%, the company said. Its portfolio in Onondaga County already included such brands as Constellation (Corona etc.), Mark Anthony (White Claw hard seltzer etc.), Yuengling, Heineken and Pabst.

Welp.
Looks like that may solve the minutes problem at C -
IF Edwards can’t get back, it could be just the reason needed to have him redshirt this year.
