Welcome to Color TV Day!

The "GE Years' in Liverpool changed the village, and Central New York with a new-style manufacturing facility and lifestyle changes for the whole region.

On August 24, 1944, General Electric executives came to a dinner at Syracuse's Hotel Syracuse, and, in the Imperial Ballroom, announced they;d be building a big new facility just north of the City of Syracuse.

The 155 acre site, named Electronics Park, was farm and forest land near the under-construction State Thruway. Grading and clearing began in October, but was stopped two weeks later by an early winter blizzard.
The first building, the powerhouse, went up in 1946 and first television set production started in 1958. In the early 1950s, picture tube production was relocated to the Liverpool complex from Buffalo, which meant TV sets were completely produced at Electronics Park.

GE could not keep up with demand for television sets: assembly lines were turning out 120 an hour, and the company had estimated it would need a work force of about six thousand. Instead they went to a 3-shift, 24x7 operation that saw 20,000 workers in the peak years.

Strolling down memory lane: Classic shirts commemorate Orange historic moments (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

It started around 2006, when Syracuse Basketball made an amazing and unexpected run to a Big East Championship.

First, it was a wild win over #1 UConn which led to a shirt titled "Ex-Cuse Us" but the title led to another t-shirt labeled "Overrated?!?!" in response to a newspaper article polling of Big East Assistant Coaches that called Gerry McNamara that ridiculous title.

G-Mac proved them wrong, Central New Yorkers wore those creations by Holy Shirt! with pride.

And for the next few years, that was the tradition. Big moment, t-shirts fly off the shelves.

In fact Holy Shirt! creations are even on display at Madison Square Garden, after the six overtime game led to a t-shirt just as epic as the game titled "Marathon Men" which even Steven Colbert showed off.

From Final Four bids for the SU Men and Women's Basketball teams, to Greg Paulus suiting up for SU Football to even that amazing shot by Tyler Ennis for a good 10 years or so, those commemorative t-shirts were all the rage.

Including one couple getting engaged with a fun angle around the "Ice Man T-Shirt" (Ice, nickname for diamonds too, of course)

Alan Griffin

Finding a comparison for each of Syracuse’s four newcomers... (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)

The future of Syracuse hoops rests on its new talent. Next season and beyond, the Orange will count on its four newcomers — three freshmen and one transfer — to produce. We maintain an infatuation over what players might someday become, so here we evaluate the newcomers by linking them with an ex-Syracuse player with whom their playing style resembles.

Alan Griffin, wing

Comparison: Malachi Richardson

Griffin, a 6-5 shot-maker who transferred from Illinois, drilled 42 percent of his 3-point attempts a year ago for the Illini. Syracuse is optimistic he’ll be granted a waiver and play the 2020-21 season. Whenever Griffin does hit the floor, his game mirrors that of Richardson, the freshman sensation for the Orange during their 2015-16 Final Four campaign. Both are tall, long guards who can operate some at the point but thrive better on the wings. Both possess good-looking outside shots, showcase athleticism in the lane and rebound fairly well for guards. Below is tape from Griffin’s sophomore season.

Fizz Four: Conference Tournament Games No. 3 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Bonaparte)

Jim Boeheim took the Syracuse basketball coaching job in 1976. When he did, the team had tasted some slight success. A couple of conference-winning years, and a Final Four appearance but not much more than that. After the Hall of Fame coach took over, the wins started to roll in. Boeheim wasn’t the only reason though. The talent on the Orange rosters began to grow each year. After Dave Bing was the talk of the town in the early 60s, SU didn’t have NBA-caliber talent until 1974 when Marty Byrnes showed up. That wasn’t the story in the 80s.

#3: Syracuse vs. Villanova March 7, 1981

In the 1980-81 campaign, SU sported some serious talent. Danny Schayes and Leo Rautins, who were both NBA-bound, led the squad to 15 wins heading into the Big East Tournament. The Orange struggled in their tough conference that season, just 6-8 against Big East opponents, but you wouldn’t have guessed it by the way they played. Their grit and unwillingness to give up were unmatched by any other team. In the first round, Syracuse skated past St. Johns, 71-66, and with that momentum, made quick work of Georgetown, 67-53 in the next round. That brought Boeheim’s squad to the Finals of the Big East Tournament against Villanova. It’s important to keep in mind that today the same tournament is held in Madison Square Garden, arguably the most historic arena in sports, but before then it didn’t have a permanent home. In 1981 the tournament was held in the Carrier Dome, effectively making every contest a home game for SU. So with their home crowd behind them and two wins under the belt, the Orange looked to the Wildcats. Nova had quite the squad that season, John Pinone, Stewart Granger, and Alex Bradley were the scary faces on that team. There was no way around it, Syracuse would have its hands full in this matchup.

Slackie Brown creator Casey Pazzalia spent some time chatting with Syracuse basketball legend Eric Devendorf about the 2020 TBT & Boeheim's Army (0:20), NBA (6:00), his coaching career (7:43), Jim Boeheim (9:20) and his years at Syracuse/6OT game/decision to join the Orange (10:50).

Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim squashes any talk about not coaching (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball players are coming back to the Hill the weekend of July 6, per a report, and Jim Boeheim is coaching them amid the pandemic.

Of course Jim Boeheim is coaching Syracuse basketball in the upcoming campaign. Could you imagine any other scenario playing out?

In mid-May, we published a piece that discussed the potentially difficult position that the Orange head coach could find himself in as it relates to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

While the 75-year-old Boeheim is healthy and has no underlying conditions, he is also considered in a higher-risk category to possibly develop complications if he became infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Medical experts have said, although not necessarily speaking about Boeheim directly, that it might not prove entirely safe for someone in his age bracket to reside on a collegiate campus this fall, especially since Covid-19 cases continue to rise in many parts of the United States.

However, Boeheim is 100 percent coaching in the 2020-21 term, he told Donna Ditota of Syracuse.com.

That echoes the sentiment of what Pete Moore, a spokesman for the Orange basketball program, tweeted to us in response to our mid-May story. Moore said of Boeheim, “If ‘Cuse plays, he’s our guy!”

Keatts: ACC-HBCU Matchups 'Unlikely This Year' (SI; Friedlander)

NC State basketball coach Kevin Keatts is still optimistic that a series of basketball games between ACC teams and Historically Black College and Universities opponents to commemorate Martin Luther King Day will eventually happen.

It just might not happen this season.

"We’ve talked about it as the ACC," Keatts said earlier this week during a guest spot on the ACC Network's Packer and Durham show. "I do think that it is a possibility that it will happen in the future. I don’t know that it will happen this year.

"When you look at most colleges, including the ACC, most of us are finished with our schedule. Nobody knows how the pandemic will affect things. When it gets into January, we may have to play all conference games."

The idea of playing games against HBCU opponents on Jan. 18, 2021, presumably on the road, was first brought up by an unnamed ACC coach last week. It was designed to call attention to the nationwide debate over racial inequality and remind people of the meaning behind the MLK Day observance.

Being banned from the NCAA men’s basketball post season is only a good thing when you benefit from it. So how, you ask, does anyone benefit that has been banned? Well, they don’t but at least one other team will. In this case the Oklahoma State Cowboys 20-21 ban directly benefits the Virginia Tech Hokies. It also provides a boost for the ACC overall as the conference is now tied as the leader for teams in Joe Lunardi’s latest bracket.

Yes, someone’s misfortune always ends up being an advantage to another. The Cowboys have paved the way for the Hokies in grabbing a Last 4 In spot. Of course, there’s always a chance that Oklahoma State could appeal and win that post season ban. Certainly, Cade Cunningham would appreciate that being turned over as the star recruit is set to debut this season.

Among conferences the Big Ten and ACC each have 9 teams in Lunardi’s latest configuration. The SEC has 7, the Big 12 registers 6 and rounding out the top five is the PAC 12 with 5 teams.

Cowboys Clear Path

The top four No. 1 seeds are Baylor, Gonzaga, Villanova and Virginia. The Cavaliers are the top seed in the Midwest Region. When it comes to winning a national championship how do these teams stack up according to oddsmakers? The college basketball futures betting odds from VegasInsiders have Baylor and Gonzaga at +800 and Villanova and Virginia at +900.

How do other ACC teams stack up?

  • +1400 Duke
  • +1500 Florida State
  • +2500 North Carolina
  • +3000 Louisville
  • +5000 Georgia Tech
Brackets – ACC Teams

Louisville basketball: 3 things to like about new commit El Ellis (BRL; Lane)

Each year we see one or two players come from the JUCO ranks who are ready to come in and be a star from day one. Last year obviously we saw that’s what Scrubb could’ve been, and this year Ellis will follow in the same footsteps.

In a time where Louisville basketball has been severely impacted by the ongoing NCAA investigation into the program, Mack has continued to find creative ways to keep recruiting going strong and keep the roster stacked. Assuming that Ellis eventually plays for Louisville and goes on to have a big career, you can guarantee that more players are going to follow. While not all junior college players are ready or able to play at a high level in leagues like the ACC, there are typically one or two players who are – and now Louisville should find themselves in a good position to continue adding experienced and talented players.

Tech Talks: Eric Reveno and Malachi Rice (ramlinwreck.com; podcast)

Georgia Tech associate head basketball coach Eric Reveno and rising senior Malachi Rice chat with Andy Demetra, the Voice of the Jackets, about the #AllVoteNoPlay initiative that grew out of Rice’s challenge to his teammates to exercise their voting rights during a team video call the Monday night following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Rice made the call to his teammates, and Reveno began pushing the call on social media to have the NCAA declare Election Day (Nov. 3) a day off from mandatory athletic activities. All nine Georgia Tech sports teams who are in season at that time have made Nov. 3 a mandatory day off, and many other institutional athletic departments and conferences have jumped on board.

Pistons’ hiring of Troy Weaver goes beyond basketball (mlive.com; Williams)

When the Detroit Pistons searched for a new general manager to help lead the organization, it came down to finding the right fit. Last week Thursday, they found the right person in Troy Weaver.

The Pistons tried to hire him two years ago from Oklahoma City but the timing worked out for the best now. The move also comes at a significant time, as the country attempts to reckon with the systemic barriers in place that slow the progress of the Black community, as well as other communities of color.

When Detroit hired Weaver, he became the eighth Black GM in the NBA. He joined Koby Altman (Cavaliers), Elton Brand (Pelicans), Marc Eversley (Bulls), James Jones (Suns), Trajan Langdon (Pelicans), Scott Perry (Knicks) and Brian Wright (Spurs).

With that, the Pistons are now one of four teams that have a black GM and a black head coach (Dwane Casey). They join the Cavaliers, Pelicans and Suns.

Grand Canyon's entire team in virus quarantine (ESPN; AP)

Grand Canyon's entire men's basketball team has been placed in quarantine after four players and two support staff members tested positive for the coronavirus.

All 14 players and two student managers are in quarantine at a designated on-campus residence hall for the next two weeks.

Players began reporting for voluntary individual workouts last week and were quarantined for 72 hours pending results of coronavirus tests and physicals. Four players who were asymptomatic tested positive at the end of the 72 hours and remained in quarantine while contact tracing was conducted.

Players who tested negative also remained in quarantine as a precaution and will be tested again. The two support staffers who tested positive will remain at home for two weeks.

DeWitt police to crack down on street racing on Erie Boulevard East (PS; Libonati)

The DeWitt Police Department says it will begin cracking down on street racing on Erie Boulevard East this weekend.

The department has received complaints about the noise of engines being revved, aggressive driving and loud music coming from cars that congregate in parking lots along the street, according to the DeWitt Police Department.

The complaints have come from those living in neighborhoods near Erie Boulevard, police said.

Starting during the weekend, the department will work with other local police agencies to enforce the crackdown.

Businesses along Erie Boulevard East whose parking lots have been used by drivers to congregate in the past “will likely” desire prosecution of those who are trespassing, the department said.
