Fashion-Day.jpg

Welcome to Fashion Day!

Fashion Day is observed to showcase one's fashion sense to the world. Participants wear their most fashionable clothing and share pictures of themselves on social media. Fashion can be defined as an aesthetic expression through clothing, as well as through footwear, hairstyle, accessories, makeup, and more. Fashion exists at a specific time and place and within a social context, and designates what dress is a "social signifier." It often is supported by the fashion industry and tied to a fashion season. It lasts longer than a "trend," and is distinct from "style," which lasts many seasons and is often connected to culture, cultural movements, and class.

Boeheim's Army brings basketball joy back for passionate SU fans (and coaches) (PS; Ditota)

Chantel Winkler was prepared.

The Syracuse basketball fan plotted a strategy for watching Boeheim’s Army Tuesday in The Basketball Tournament. She and two friends she’d been quarantining with during the coronavirus pandemic would escape to the backyard oasis she’d built with money she’d won from a previous TBT. She’d turn on the tiki bar TV as the game approached, slip into her pool and enjoy watching basketball for the first time since March Madness morphed into March Sadness.

“I watched the game before,” she said, referring to the Sideline Cancer-Challenge ALS game. “Anticipation was very high. I need my basketball fix. It got cut short and this is what I needed.”

Syracuse Basketball: Elijah Hughes in mid-40s on new NBA Draft big board (itlh; Adler)

Former Syracuse basketball star Elijah Hughes, who has received some first-round draft projections of late, is No. 44 in Bleacher Report’s top-50 players.

Former Syracuse basketball player Elijah Hughes has made the cut on Bleacher Report’s updated top-50 big board for the upcoming NBA Draft, and the number where he is placed will please Orange fanatics.

Jonathan Wasserman, lead NBA scout and draft writer for Bleacher Report, recently published his latest list of the top-50 guys as far as the NBA Draft is concerned, and Hughes is No. 44. How appropriate!

Hughes, a talented and versatile small forward, led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring during the 2019-20 campaign, his redshirt-junior term. He not only fared well in producing points, but Hughes also performed admirably in both assists doled out per game, as well as rebounding.

Syracuse Basketball Players that didn’t Pan Out – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Bonaparte)

Syracuse basketball has had its fair share of top recruits in the past, Carmelo Anthony, Jonny Flynn, and Michael Carter-Williams just to name a few. A lot of the guys that have come through the salt city have played well and won some big games, but some of them really haven’t. This list will unveil three highly-rated players that didn’t pan out the way SU had envisioned.

Jalen Carey: Though it may seem like recency bias, Carey’s play at SU never lived up to the hype he had coming in. The kid from Harlem was supposed to be the next top SU guard, like Brandon Triche, Tyler Ennis, Gerry McNamara, or Pearl Washington. Instead, he lived on the bench for his entire tenure in Orange. He showed flashes of potential here and there but never fully got a chance to show off his skills. It was clear that Coach Boeheim was never sold on the idea of Carey being his next guard, against Colgate this past season Joe Girard III was clearly favored over the then Sophomore guard. In the post-game press conference, the Hall of Fame coach was asked a question regarding Carey’s playing time, “What has Jalen not been able to show you, and what can he work on?” Boeheim answered with a question of his own, “Did you watch the game today? Then you don’t need to ask that question…Joe will be starting Saturday.” From that point on it was clear that Carey probably wouldn’t be getting many more chances. It makes sense that he transferred to Rhode Island.

Darius Bazley: Now notorious for helping to jumpstart the G-League in place of the NCAA, Bazely was ranked as the 17th highest prospect in 2018. After being struck with sanctions and struggling for a few years, Syracuse was excited to get a guy like Bazley to hopefully restart dominance on the college basketball scene. Things didn’t turn out that way as the 5-star talent spurned SU by redirecting his commitment from College to the G-League. It’s fair to say it worked out, the 6’9’’ forward was selected by the Thunder with the 23rd pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and played significant minutes for a contending team.

Dajuan Coleman: A local kid that was supposed to team up with Rakeem Christmas to create an unstoppable force down low turned into one of the most disappointing prospects in SU basketball history. Ranked the 18th highest high school prospect in 2012, above guys like Kris Dunn, Willie Cauley-Stein, Terry Rozier, and more. Coleman, a McDonald’s All-American in High School was supposed to be the next big thing. Instead, he put up mediocre numbers from freshman-senior year, never averaging more than 5.6 PPG or 4.8 RPG. Some argue the Jamesville-Dewitt high school product never fully got a chance at the collegiate level as he never averaged more than 17.5 MPG, but his numbers speak for themselves.

For Syracuse, it's largely about getting back to its... (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)

Editor’s note: This offseason The Athletic is again exploring the college basketball landscape with in-depth examinations of 75 key programs. This story is a part of that continuing series.

The last decade or so of Syracuse hoops could have been coach Jim Boeheim’s best: a stellar stretch of winning early in the 2010s, with five Sweet 16 appearances and a pair of Final Fours. But it also could have been the program’s worst during the coach’s 44-year tenure. Bear in mind SU hasn’t finished in the season-end Top 25 in six years, which represents a deviation from the norm. And including their incomplete 2020 season, on pace to end with an NIT appearance, the Orange wouldn’t have played in the NCAA Tournament in three of the past six seasons. Many programs would gladly bat .500. Not Syracuse, whose rabid fan base maintains high expectations for reaching the Big Dance every year. That’s the panoramic view of Syracuse hoops.

The question, then, becomes: When will the Orange break through and reach the days of hanging back in the Top 25? An analysis of what Syracuse is losing (Elijah Hughes) and what it’s gaining (transfer wing Alan Griffin) leads us to believe SU is still at least a year away from being its old self. In the way-too-early preseason ACC rankings from The Athletic, Syracuse checked in at 11th out of 15 teams. That may be harsh, because SU returns five of its six top players and brings in one of the best wing transfers on the market. But Syracuse loses Hughes along with his 19 points per game. If the returning starters don’t make big strides, many believe it could be another year on the bubble. If they do make the necessary jumps, starting with backcourt mates Joseph Girard and Buddy Boeheim, Syracuse could sneak back into the Big Dance.

Destiny USA cleared to reopen Friday, county exec says (PS; Baker)

Destiny USA will reopen Friday after being closed for nearly four months amid the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon.

The mall meets new requirements outlined by Gov. Andrew Cuomo Wednesday and will be cleared to reopen.

McMahon said he’s spoken with Destiny officials, who have upgraded the mall’s air filtration system to meet new requirements. The mall’s air filtration system will need a MERV rating of at least 11. McMahon said Destiny’s updated system will meet that goal.

In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Pyramid Management...
