Welcome to Guinea Pig Appreciation Day!

It's time to show a little appreciation for one of the most popular pocket-sized pets: the guinea pig! Guinea Pig Appreciation Day was founded by Piggles Guinea Pig Rescue, a "foster-home based rescue, rehoming and advice service in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada." July 16 was chosen as the holiday's date because "G" is the 7th letter of the alphabet and "P' is the 16th.

Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, are domesticated rodents that are native to South America. They were domesticated by the Incas over 3,000 years ago, who bred them for food, to be used as pets, and to sacrifice to their gods. They were brought to Europe by Spanish conquistadors towards the end of the sixteenth century, where they became popular pets. It is unknown why they ended up with the name "guinea pig," but there are a few theories. Their roasted meat may have reminded Europeans of suckling pigs; they make squealing noises that may have reminded people of pigs; they may have been sold for one guinea when they first arrived in England, or they may have been carried to European markets from ships leaving Guiana in South America or Guinea in West Africa.

Would Gerry McNamara ever play for Boeheim’s Army? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; Waters)

It’s really amazing how Syracuse fans support Boeheim’s Army each year in The Basketball Tournament.

From traveling to away games in the TBT’s early years to showing up in droves at OCC’s SRC Arena, Syracuse fans can’t get enough of the former Syracuse players.

The SU fans support of Boeheim’s Army is noticeable here at Mike’s Mailbox where over the past few weeks I have received a steady stream of questions about the team, the players and the tournament itself.

This week is no different. Let’s do it.

If you’ve got a question for Mike’s Mailbox, email me at mwaters@syracuse.com or find me on Twitter at @MikeWatersSYR.

Q: Just curious whether Gerry McNamara would ever consider playing for Boeheim’s Army in the TBT. He was such a prolific scorer for SU and a terrific outside shooter.

Ray H.

Mike: This is one of many questions I received about Gerry McNamara playing for Boeheim’s Army. It shows you just how great the legend of GMac is that Syracuse fans think he could still play against current pros.

McNamara finished his SU career in 2006. He last played pro ball in 2009. That’s over 10 years ago. He turns 37 years old this August.

A sense of normalcy in July for Syracuse Basketball (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

Let's face it, 2020 has been anything but normal in any and every sense of the word.

So any slice of "normal" is welcome and in a lot of ways comforting.

It's absolutely nothing out of the ordinary for Syracuse Basketball players to be back on campus working out with strength coaches in July.

It just means so much more in this unprecedented year.

"It's great to see the guys back" Orange Associate Head Coach Adrian Autry told me on Wednesday

"We didn't know if we were going to get a chance to get them back, so it's really great to see them. Just seeing them, being able to talk with them, interacting with them. Really, just trying to get back to normalcy and get back to business and that's a good thing."

Autry says the coaches can't work with the team until next week, but it's just having them back on campus and together as a unit for the first time since the pandemic hit New York in full force in March. A team that ended on "a high note" as Autry called it with the win over North Carolina in the ACC Tournament can finally work together again with hopes than they can make a new dream come true in 2021.

How TBT pulled off a basketball tournament during a raging pandemic (PS; Ditota)

When Jon Mugar and his The Basketball Tournament colleagues were planning to hold their annual winner-take-all summer event, they leaned on anecdotal evidence to steer their coronavirus strategy and then filtered those ideas through a Johns Hopkins public health expert.

The result of those collaborations was a relatively glitch-free TBT that crowned a champion on Tuesday night in Columbus, Ohio. No fans were in the Nationwide Arena to cheer the champions — the Golden Eagles, a Marquette alumni team — but applause came from a basketball community that commended the effort it took to pull off a multi-team tournament in a contact sport during a raging pandemic.

Big Ten ties ACC for most schools making NCAA Tournament in Joe Lunardi's way-too-early Bracketology (saturdaytradition.com; Cunningham)

We’re all hopeful about a college football season being played this fall. But looking past the football season and into March of 2021, that’s when an NCAA Tournament could be taking place.

We missed out on the NCAA Tournament in 2020. It was essentially the beginning of the disaster that has occurred for sports fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But, what about in 2021? Surely we’ll have a national tournament by then, no?

We can only hope so.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, a well-known bracketologist, actually put together a hypothetical bracket on Wednesday for that 2021 tournament.

The entire bracket can be found here.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Nine B1G teams make the tournament, which ties the ACC for getting the most teams in
  • Michigan State and Wisconsin both earn No. 2 seeds (none from the B1G get a No. 1)
  • Iowa gets a No. 3 seed
  • The B1G would be close to getting 12 schools in (Minnesota is listed as First Four Out while Penn State and Maryland are in the Next Four Out group)

College students confront fall’s reality: ‘A lot of people are upset we’re paying more for less’ (PS; Carlson)

When Curran Campbell arrived at Syracuse University a year ago, he relished the idea of hands-on learning at the school’s student TV station. He couldn’t wait to attend basketball and football games.

As he thought about returning this fall, he wondered what his two-week mandatory quarantine would be like. Would he be able to interact with his peers at the TV station, the Carrier Dome or, really, anywhere outside his dorm room?

His fall tuition check is due Friday, and Campbell and his family won’t pay it. Instead he will spend the semester taking online classes from a school in his home state of North Carolina.

It was a decision thousands of families in New York and across the country will confront this fall: Is it worth returning to college in a pandemic?
