Welcome to National Junk Food Day!

Junk Food Day is devoted to junk food, which is food mostly devoid of nutritional value, but instead high in fat, sugar, and salt, and often highly processed. When eaten in high amounts, junk food may impact energy levels, contribute to obesity and cardiovascular disease, and advance other health problems. It may even alter brain activity and affect emotional well-being.

The word "junk food" is usually thought to date back to the early 1950s, although some have credited Michael F. Jacobson of the Center for Science in Public Interest as coining the term in 1972. Junk food has since become a part of American culture, although there has been much effort to curtail its growth over the years.

The list of foods that are considered junk foods is endless. Most foods at fast food restaurants are considered junk foods, although not all offerings are. Many of the following are considered junk foods, although some of these foods can be prepared in healthier ways. Common foods include burgers, fried chicken, hot dogs, ice cream, potato chips, fries, chicken nuggets, pizza, candy, cookies, and soda. Even some cereals can be considered junk food, when they are high in sugar and high fructose corn syrup, and are made with white flour.

Jim Boeheim got his first look at the 2020-21 Orange on Monday (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse University basketball team — coaches and players included — gathered for the first time since the Orange’s win over North Carolina in the ACC Tournament on March 11.

Since then, the players had scattered to the homes of their parents, guardians or girlfriends after the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to first the college basketball season and then the spring semester.

The players returned to the SU campus two weeks ago, but it was only after a period of quarantine that the coaches were allowed to work with the players on the basketball court.

Jim Boeheim and his assistants put the players through drills in a limited practice session on Monday at the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center.

What Woody Newton brings to Syracuse: Depth at forward and... (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)

During the early months of the pandemic, Syracuse freshman forward Woody Newton resided in a small pool of athletes who could work out on an actual basketball court. Every day, for 45 minutes to an hour, Newton would shoot on an outdoor court at a hotel near his family’s home in the Washington, D.C. area. He hoisted jumpers, practiced finishing at the rim and worked on his ballhandling skills, particularly with his left hand. He was chasing a plan assistant coach Allen Griffin, his lead recruiter, had shared with him.

“Upgrade your shot, and you can play a lot,” Newton recalls Griffin saying. “Playing with a high motor will help you earn playing time, but we need the ability to shoot.”

Griffin’s observation offers a window into the path Newton could take to earn playing time as a freshman. It also provides insight into where the Orange may be lacking in 2020-21: perimeter skill and shot-making ability among players not named Joseph...

Syracuse Basketball: Dior Johnson recruiting impact impossible to quantify (itlh; Adler)

Dior Johnson is the highest-rated recruit for Syracuse basketball since Carmelo Anthony, and Johnson’s positive influence on Orange recruiting is enormous.

It’s no guarantee that Syracuse basketball commit Dior Johnson will ever set foot on the ‘Cuse campus, but if he does, his effect on Orange recruiting efforts is absolutely colossal.

When the 2022 five-star point guard committed to Syracuse basketball earlier this year, he said at the time that he plans to bring other elite prospects with him to the Hill. I wholeheartedly believe him.

The 6-foot-3 point guard, who has transferred to powerhouse prep-school program the Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., says he doesn’t want to join a blue-blood squad, such as Duke, Kansas, Kentucky or North Carolina.

Rather, Johnson has adamantly and confidently declared that he and other top-flight talents that will arrive at the ‘Cuse with him are going to beat those types of teams. Again, I believe him.

Now, Johnson could ultimately decide to forgo college in favor of the professional ranks. That would, naturally, break the hearts of every Orange fanatic out there.

However, Johnson is also seriously weighing a reclassification to the 2021 recruiting cycle, and that could definitely provide Syracuse basketball will a better chance to see him don a ‘Cuse uniform for one, or maybe two, campaigns.

Syracuse basketball begins workouts with coaches (localsyr.com)

Per NCAA rules, Monday July 20th marked the first time college basketball teams could begin workouts as a full team. Prior to that date, it was all voluntary workouts.

NewsChannel 9 spoke Syracuse Assistant Coach Allen Griffin about the first day of workouts. Teams can either workout or do weight training during this time.

Notes from the conversation:

  • Jess Edwards is still in the Netherlands but the team expects him back in a week or so
  • Quincy Guerrier is still working back from his offseason groin surgery. He is not participating in live drills yet
  • For now workouts are contained to positions – sophomore Joe Girard III, junior Buddy Boeheim and Illinois transfer junior Alan Griffin began working with the guards; senior Marek Dolezaj, redshirt sophomore Robert Braswell, freshman Woody Newton, freshman Kadary Richmond and sophomore Quincy Guerrier(when healthy) are with the forwards; senior Bourama Sidibe, redshirt freshman John Bol Ajak, freshman Frank Anselem and sophomore Jesse Edwards(when he arrives) are with the centers
  • Coach Griffin feels Sidibe has added about 15 pounds of muscle
  • Coach Griffin felt Girard III and Boeheim were in great shape, almost looked game ready
  • Coach Griffin categorized Alan Griffin as a “relentless worker”

The ultimate conference for Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; Dagostino)

This summer’s idea by Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde of college sports realigning into 10 geographically-friendly conferences to be more fiscally responsible during these current COVID-19 times got the wheels inside my head turning. While it doesn’t necessarily relate to Forde’s premise, the question is:

What would the ultimate Syracuse college basketball conference look like?

The parameters are:

  • 14 teams
  • Pack the conference full of teams that have given Syracuse the best (and worst) memories most consistently throughout the basketball program’s history
  • … And no touching of the hair or the face!!!
Let the fun begin:

First, the honorable mentions…

THE LESS MEMORABLE FORMER BIG EAST FOES

Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall and West Virginia. All have had their share of players and coaches come through that tested Syracuse. From P.J. Carlesimo and Terry Dehere to John Beilein and Kevin Pittsnogle and more, it’s a good cast of characters. Just not worthy of being in the ultimate conference for Syracuse hoops.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME OPPONENTS

Syracuse has appeared in the NCAA National Championship game. Each time, they faced one of college basketball’s Blue Bloods.

The most recent one in 2003? Hakim Warrick’s wingspan preserved the Orange(men)’s first and only national title to date, holding off Kansas.

The other in 1996? Yeah…not as successful. Syracuse’s Cinderella story struck midnight when it faced a Kentucky team led by head coach Rick Pitino and a slew of would-be NBA players. Nine of them, to be exact. Antoine Walker, Walter McCarty, Ron Mercer, Tony Delk, Derek Anderson, Mark Pope, Nazr Mohammed, Jeff Sheppard and Wayne Turner all went on to play in the NBA. That party of pros proved to be too much for John Wallace, Lazarus Sims and company.

Chips? Chips and salsa? Cuomo’s rules on food sales at bars still cause confusion (PS; Cazentre)

Chips? Chips and salsa? Cuomo’s rules on food sales at bars still causing confusion

Who knows how many unintended consequences have hit restaurants and bars since Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a new order last week requiring all alcohol sales to be accompanied by a food purchase.

But here’s the one that Tom Ireardi, owner of Finger Lakes on Tap in Skaneateles, has noticed:
“We’ve thrown out a lot more food in the past few days than we ever have,” said Ireardi, whose place at 35 Fennell St. is a craft beer-centric bar and kitchen. “People are ordering food, because they have to. But they’re not always eating it.”

Cuomo said his directive was intended to prevent the prolonged mingling that often happens at bars when people drink without dining. That mingling, Cuomo said, could help spread the coronavirus.

But the order also caused a lot of prolonged head-scratching.
