Welcome to National Vanilla Ice Cream Day!

Made by freezing a custard of cream or milk, sugar, eggs, and vanilla beans or flavoring, vanilla ice cream is the most popular flavor of ice cream in the United States and Canada according to some surveys.

Vanilla is a flavoring that comes from the pods of the fruit of the vanilla orchid. A native plant of Mexico, vanilla was unknown to the world outside Central America until the late 1600s. Today, it is one of the world's most recognized flavors. The expression, plain vanilla, is used to refer to something that is commonplace and does not have any special or distinguishing characteristics.

Vanilla Ice Cream Day is also sometimes known as National Vanilla Ice Cream Day in the US.

Could coronavirus push Jimmy Boeheim to transfer from Cornell to SU? (Mike's Mailbox) (PS; Waters)

I’ve been asked about Jimmy Boeheim playing for his dad at Syracuse University about a million times over the past three or four years. This, despite the fact that Jimmy has never given any indication that he might transfer.

But the coronavirus pandemic could change things, as one reader points out in this week’s Mike’s Mailbox.

For that reason, I’m entertaining a question that I frequently have brushed off.

Let’s do it.

Q: Say Cornell or the Ivy League decides to shut down basketball for the entire season and say the ACC decides to play basketball, could we see Jimmy Boeheim suit up for the Orange?
Bruce K.

Mike: If the Ivy League, or any other conference, decided not to play at all in the 2020-21 season while other conferences went on with their schedules, it would create a nightmare scenario for college basketball.

It would also create an extremely difficult situation for senior athletes at Ivy League schools, including Cornell forward Jimmy Boeheim.

For now, the Ivy League has pushed back all sports until the end of the fall semester. That date is Dec. 22 for Cornell.

Jimmy Boeheim often has said that he had no desire to transfer to Syracuse and wanted to finish his college career at Cornell, but the coronavirus pandemic has complicated matters.

NBA season restart next week, Syracuse basketball players rostered (PS; Mlodzinski)

With the NBA season right around the corner from starting back up, there are plenty of former Syracuse basketball stars that will be on the court.

Former Syracuse Basketball Players on NBA Rosters for Restart

  • Carmelo Anthony – Portland Trail Blazers
  • Dion Waiters – Los Angeles Lakers
  • Jerami Grant – Denver Nuggets
  • Michael Carter-Williams – Orlando Magic
Although Orange fans wish this list were longer, the talent is nothing short of amazing. Between Anthony, Grant, and Waiters, there are three guys who can score 20 points or more on any given night. Carter-Williams is having his best statistical season since the 2015-16 season, putting up 7.2 points per game and 3.3 rebounds. The full official rosters can be found on NBA.com.

For Anthony and Grant, it will be about keeping their teams in the playoff race and potentially helping to pull off an upset or two. Melo’s Blazers currently sit tied for ninth in the Western Conference, so ‘Skinny Melo’ may need to muster up a few clutch shots to help them earn a playoff spot. Meanwhile, Grant’s Nuggets are holding down the third spot in the West, trying to compete with both Los Angeles heavyweights. Grant’s play off the bench, coupled with 22 trips to the starting lineup, has provided Denver with a key role scorer and rebounder to help Nikola Jokic and Paul Millsap.

SU Legend Leo Rautins Is Canada’s Mr. Basketball and Living His Best Life – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

The performance and the attitude were pure Leo. What is it about guys named Leo? DiCaprio, Gorcey, Tolstoy, Durocher – even Uncle Leo from Seinfeld – all carry themselves with a well-established inner confidence.

We all should be dealing with COVID-19 lockdown as smoothly as Syracuse legend Leo Rautins is handling it.

Stress? Not here. Frustration? Nowhere to be seen. Out of things to do? No, Rautins isn’t the kind of guy who does boring.

Laying poolside, Rautins is dressed in tank top and shorts. He looks lean, tall and tanned and far too well conditioned to be 60 years of age. His level of relaxation suggests that the glass of wine situated on the table next to his lounge chair isn’t the first one he’s enjoyed today.

Rautins is holding a basketball because, of course he is. He’s Leo, after all.

The camera is rolling and Rautins is comfortable in its lens.

On this particular day, the Twitter video opens with a wide shot. Suddenly, a basketball arcs high in the air from behind the house, grabbing nothing but net and it swishes through the hoop on the other side of the swimming pool.

As the ball is skyward, Rautins strolls out around the corner of the house from the same place where the basketball had just emerged. He struts self-assuredly to the chez lounge that is situated poolside.

Rautins stops in his tracks, feigning surprise to see the camera. “Oh hey, what are you doing here?” he asks. “Oh, I know what you’re doing here. It’s five o’clock. So you know what that means?
