Welcome to Do Something Nice Day!

Yesterday you may have celebrated International Toot Your Own Flute Day, where you spent the day being selfish and thinking only about yourself. Today is a day to be selfless and think about others. Not only should you think about them, but you should put your thoughts into actions by doing something nice for them. Whatever you do should be done not because it will evoke a positive response from someone else, but because your are doing it from your heart. So often we go through our days in a hurry and don't think about the effect on someone else that stopping and pausing to do something nice will have. Today is a day to set a foundation of kindness that hopefully will stay long after this day has passed.

The comprehensive guide to Syracuse basketball alumni in the NBA playoffs (the juice; Cheng)

By now, it’s been well documented that Dion Waiters is the first Syracuse basketball alumnus to appear on an NBA Finals roster in 40 years. The last time it happened, Marty Byrnes made a cameo appearance for the Los Angeles Lakers when they won the 1980 NBA Championship.

I did some research, and since Byrnes’ appearance, 19 Syracuse alumni have played in NBA playoff games. Some of those moments have been fleeting (LeRon Ellis saw the court for all of two minutes in the 1992 NBA playoffs), while some other players had more sustained success (both Danny Schayes and Carmelo Anthony have made the postseason in 12 different seasons).

Before I get to the raw data, here are some other observations:

  1. Of the 19 players, Carmelo Anthony has appeared in the most playoff games (77). Still, that number is slightly skewed since the NBA ditched the best-of-five format in the first round for a best-of-seven by the time Anthony joined the NBA (2003). Immediately behind him is Schayes, who appeared in 69.

Syracuse Basketball: As list nears, top target Roddy Gayle Jr. holds visits (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball high-priority 2022 target Roddy Gayle Jr. has recently talked with Orange coaches as well as several other teams.

Syracuse basketball 2022 target Roddy Gayle Jr. is expected to trim down his list of contenders soon, and it would honestly shock me if the Orange doesn’t make the cut.

The 6-foot-5 Gayle, a junior at Lewiston-Porter High School in Youngstown, N.Y., is a top-30 prospect in this recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports.

In recent media reports, he has spoken in an extremely positive light about Syracuse basketball and his relationship with the ‘Cuse coaching staff.

While he holds a slew of high-major scholarship offers, and I haven’t seen any recruiting analyst predictions for him to date, it’s worth noting that the Orange is the only squad listed as “warm” within Gayle’s bio on the 247Sports Web site.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange with interest in 2023 top-20 Jacoi Hutchinson (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has interest in Jacoi Hutchinson, a 2023 four-star player out of legendary DeMatha Catholic.

Historically, Syracuse basketball has fared well on the recruiting front in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., metropolitan areas, and, to that end, the Orange is showing interest in 2023 four-star Jacoi Hutchinson, who suits up for a powerhouse program in Maryland.

According to Hutchinson’s bio on the 247Sports Web site, the 6-foot-2 shooting guard has yet to receive a scholarship offer, however, he is getting interest from a quartet of big-time college teams.

They are former Big East Conference nemesis Georgetown, Big Ten Conference member Maryland, Syracuse basketball and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference participant Virginia, which captured the 2019 NCAA championship.

Syracuse Basketball: Alan Griffin is a ‘double-figure scorer and starter’ (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball junior wing Alan Griffin is one of Jon Rothstein’s 25 impact transfers for the upcoming campaign.

Syracuse basketball junior wing Alan Griffin, a native of Ossining, N.Y., who transferred to the Orange from Illinois over the off-season, is garnering all kinds of national praise as the 2020-21 term inches closer to fruition.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein recently published his list of 25 impact transfers for 2020-21, not including those who have pending waivers before the NCAA, and Griffin unsurprisingly made the cut.

Ever since Griffin revealed that he would head from Illinois to the Hill, national analysts and writers have pegged him as one of the top-10 to top-15 transfers across the country, as it pertains to players who have switched teams and are eligible to officially compete in the coming months.

Here’s what Rothstein had to say about Griffin: “Syracuse will miss Elijah Hughes’ offense, but Griffin should fill his role seamlessly. The 6-5 wing averaged 8.9 points last year at Illinois and made 47 three-point shots while only averaging 18.1 minutes. Now set to have an expanded role with the Orange, Griffin should be a double-figure scorer and starter for Syracuse in 20-21.”

Syracuse basketball junior wing Alan Griffin is getting positive recognition from college hoops insider Jon Rothstein.

Now, Rothstein is easily one of the most knowledgeable journalists in the sport, however, the jury is still out, at least from my perspective, on whether Griffin will start for the ‘Cuse in 2020-21.

Syracuse Basketball: Wish list for Orange targets to land in next 3 cycles (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is pursuing a slew of top-flight talents in the upcoming recruiting cycles, and here’s whom the Orange hopefully will get.

Some Syracuse basketball fans have felt less than thrilled with the Orange’s recruiting achievements in recent seasons, but, mark my words, the ‘Cuse future in this regard looks bright.

In the 2021 class, Syracuse basketball has secured small forward Benny Williams, who attends the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and recently obtained five-star status by .

Looking ahead to the 2022 class, we all know about the commitment earlier this year from five-star point guard Dior Johnson, whose status at the Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., is unclear. However, Johnson is rated as high as No. 3 nationally by 247Sports.

Now, in those two cycles, plus the 2023 class, the Orange is pursuing a bevy of highly ranked prospects. We’ve compiled a collection of the guys in these three classes whom we’d love for the ‘Cuse to acquire.

What I’ve Been Told: Notre Dame Men’s Basketball (247sports.com; Prister)

With Notre Dame men’s basketball practice officially starting Oct. 14, there remains no word on the start of games or a release of the ACC schedule for the 2020-21 season. A source told the media Saturday, Oct. 3, that the release of an ACC schedule still remains perhaps as much as a month away.

The start of the season, at the earliest, looks like the end of November with a likely scaled-down non-conference slate.

In the meantime, the players have participated in workouts prior to the official commencement of drills a week from this Wednesday.

Here is some information that has filtered through to Irish Illustrated.

• As expected, junior point guard Prentiss Hubb is leading the Irish as the alpha dog of the group. This process began during his freshman season and really kicked into gear last year. Now with the departure of John Mooney, T.J. Gibbs and Rex Pflueger, this clearly has become Hubb’s team.

Well respected for his work in the classroom as well as on the court and in the locker room, Hubb has added a few pounds of muscle working with men’s basketball strength and conditioning coordinator Tony Rolinski. It will need to serve him well because Hubb will not come off the court very often for the Irish.

Hubb led Notre Dame in minutes played last year at 35.2 per game. If anything, his playing time will increase a bit. He started all 32 games for the Irish last year. Hubb and Gibbs were the only two Irish players to do so in 2019-20.

• If there’s another “voice” on this team – and it’s a confident personality – it’s Stanford transfer Cormac Ryan, who joined the program in 2019-20 but had to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules.

Ryan, listed at 6-foot-5, 195 pounds with two years of eligibility remaining, is a multi-faceted guard who can handle it and shoot it, which gives the Irish another one of several players who are expected to be part of a vast array of talented long-range snipers. Ryan has impressed as an offensive player who can score at all three levels. Protecting the basketball while playing at a breakneck pace is a point of emphasis with Ryan.

• Improved strength has given 6-foot-11 fifth-year senior Juwan Durham and 6-foot-10 junior Nate Laszewski a real boost as they head into their final and second-to-last years of eligibility respectively. Durham is now pushing 240 pounds while Laszewski is approaching 230. Those are good numbers for guys with length and the agility to fit in well with Notre Dame’s guard-oriented roster.

Again, the work with Rolinski – despite the limitations through several months of the pandemic – has paid dividends. The Irish will count on Durham, Laszewski, and freshmen Elijah Taylor and Matt Zona (see below) to handle the work up front.
