Welcome to Garlic Lovers Day!

Garlic Lovers Day is dedicated to lovers of garlic. Garlic is an onionlike plant that is highly aromatic and has a distinct flavor. It is native to Central Asia and Northeastern Iran, and has long been used as a seasoning and for medicine in Asia, Africa, and in Europe around the Mediterranean Sea. It was used in ancient China, Rome, and Greece, and in the Americas wild garlic was eaten before Europeans arrived. In the United States it was only popular near the Gulf of Mexico and in ethnic neighborhoods in large cities, until the mid-20th century, when its popularity spread.

Garlic is used on breads, and infused in oils that season vegetables, meats, and pastas. It is also used in making things such as bruschetta and pesto. It was used to treat gangrene during World War I and II, and studies have been done to see how it affects cardiovascular health, cancer, and the common cold, but results have been inconclusive. Most garlic is grown overseas, and 90% of the domestic crop is grown in California. There are many types of garlic, most of which are varieties of hardneck or softneck garlic.

Syracuse Basketball: Where 2023 prospects reside in 247Sports rankings (itlh; Adler)

Let’s take a look at where 2023 high-school players with offers and interest from Syracuse basketball arrived in the new 247Sports ratings.

Syracuse basketball has a few scholarship offers out there to prospects in the 2023 recruiting cycle, and interest in several more, and we examine where these guys land in the inaugural 247Sports national rankings for this class.

Up first is Elijah Fisher, whom the Orange offered back in late July. Fisher, a five-star wing with Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto, Ontario, is No. 3 overall in the 2023 class.

Matt Bewley is a five-star power forward out of the West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Fla. He is No. 8 in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Bewley doesn’t have an offer from Syracuse basketball, but I’ve read online about him reportedly receiving interest from the ‘Cuse.

Orange Watch: Syracuse basketball, ACC likely to compact schedule - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: As has been proven with the NBA currently in its championship round in Orlando, and this past summer’s The Basketball Tournament in Columbus, Ohio, the advantage of single sites hosting multiple basketball games is a big proactive step in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. With properly enforced procedures, and the resistance of temptation, the so-called “controlled environments” provide an extra layer of protection and easier testing protocols among the participants and support staffs to allow the games to be played.

Forget the term, “on the bubble” referring to a team making the NCAA Tournament or not. The phrase now in vogue to the NCAA is “Battle in the Bubble.”

Even though it prefers the aforementioned description “controlled environments,” the NCAA began the legal process in late August to own the trademark “Battle in the Bubble” for all things involving the promotion of future events and merchandise sales.

The organization, which lost almost $1 billion in television rights fees minus last spring’s version of March Madness, can’t financially stay afloat with another cancelation. It forecasted the need to come up with a creative, alternative scheduling model because of pandemic restrictions that vary state-by-state, and the need for the 2021 NCAA Tournament to proceed as planned, even if the latter has to be scaled back from the current 68-team field, with 67 games set to be played at 14 pre-booked venues.

Syracuse Basketball: 2022 3-star target Riley Mulvey picks up Big Ten offer (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2022 target Riley Mulvey is seeing his recruitment advance to a bigger stage.

Syracuse basketball target Riley Mulvey, a three-star center in the 2022 class, is now up to eight scholarship offers after he received one from Penn State not too long ago, according to his Twitter page.

The Orange offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-11 Mulvey back in August. Per a review of the main recruiting services, he currently holds offers from Albany, Bryant, Iowa, Massachusetts, Penn State, Siena, Syracuse basketball and Yale.

He is also receiving interest from Rutgers, according to his bio on the 247Sports Web site. Mulvey presently has one crystal-ball prediction in the direction of Iowa, although that came in late May.

SCHEDULE NEWS: Gavitt Games ‘Likely Dead’, Syracuse ‘Likely in January’ (casualhoya.com; Whipple)

Well after some positive news yesterday and some commentary about family with the Georgetown Hoyas, it seems two scheduling traditions may be in jeopardy with this COVID-19 year.

With some promising hope, it looks like the annual Georgetown-Syracuse game may find a Saturday in January for the schedule.

Source: Georgetown's game at Syracuse during the upcoming season is likely to be played in January. Game is expected to be played on a Saturday. Both teams have December league games.

Jim Boeheim, head coach of the Syracuse Orange, had indicated in September that “Right now we have zero games,” so this is a great improvement, for the rivalry’s sake.

As for some bad scheduling news, according to Adam Zagoria the Gavitt Games between the BIG EAST and the Big Ten are “likely dead.”

After 30 years, Northeast’s biggest farm trade show returns to Onondaga County (PS; $; Cazentre)

The largest annual farm and agriculture trade show in the Northeast will make its home in Onondaga County starting in 2021 after an absence of 34 years.

Empire Farm Days will be held at Palladino Farms (along with its Heritage Hill Brewhouse) on Sweet Road in Pompey Aug. 3, 4, and 5, 2021. That will remain its location through at least 2029, and possibly longer.

The three-day trade show typically draws 400 vendors from around the world, and at least 25,000 visitors come for its displays of farm equipment, services and products. They help fill hotel rooms, restaurants and more.

“This is a big deal,” Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said at Monday’s news conference announcing the relocation of Empire Farm Days to Palladino Farms. “I think you’ll set records.”

The 2021 event could create an economic impact for the region of at least $2.5 million, said Danny Liedka, president and CEO of Visit Syracuse, the local tourism development agency. That’s a conservative estimate, he said, and could change based on the number of visitors and the time they stay in the area.

McMahon said he hopes the relocation of the annual show to Onondaga County can help restart the local economy in 2021.

Empire Farm Days has been held since 1988 at the Rodman Lott Farm on Route 414 just south of Seneca Falls. The event began in 1931 as a show for the Empire State Potato Growers and became Empire Farm Days, showcasing all forms of agriculture, in 1967.
