Welcome to National M&M Day!

When Forrest Mars, Sr., son of Mars candy company founder Frank C. Mars., was in Spain during the 1930s, he came across a candy being eaten by British volunteer soldiers taking part in the Spanish Civil War. It consisted of chocolate pellets with hard tempered chocolate shells—shells that helped keep the candy from melting. Mars used this candy as a model for M&M's, which he thought would be ideal to sell during the warmer months. We celebrate and enjoy his creation today, on National M&M Day!

When Mars came back to the United States, he reached out to Bruce Murrie, son of William Murrie, an executive at Hershey. He thought there may be a shortage of chocolate as World War II started and that by partnering with Murrie it could be guaranteed that there would be no shortage of supplies for his candy. Murrie and Mars became partners, Murrie was given a 20% stake in the company, and the candy was named M&M's in their honor.

NCAA leaders are weighing whether to give student-athletes at Syracuse basketball and other winter sports an additional stanza of competition.

In late August, we reported on NCAA leaders deciding to grant every fall-sports athlete an additional year of eligibility through a blanket waiver, and now it appears that players for Syracuse basketball and other winter sports may receive the same.

National analyst and writer Jeff Goodman, one of the best in the business, recently tweeted out that the NCAA Division I Council could vote sometime this week on a measure that would potentially provide all winter-sport athletes with an extra term of eligibility.

Goodman quoted a source as saying, “It should pass based on precedence with fall sports.”

Sources: The Basketball Oversight Committees likely to recommend the D-1 Council vote next week on winter sports getting additional year.

Syracuse Basketball: A few targets have headed to Oregon in recent years (itlh; Adler)

Franck Kepnang is the most recent prospect offered a scholarship by Syracuse basketball who decided to commit to the Pac-12’s Oregon.

Roughly two years ago, Pac-12 Conference star Oregon did a number to Syracuse basketball in New York City in the inaugural match-up of these two teams on the court.

On the recruiting trail, the Ducks in recent seasons have managed to pick up several high-quality prospects for whom the Orange had also offered scholarships.

The latest example of a high-school player who chose Oregon, Franck Kepnang, probably amounted to a guy whom the ‘Cuse didn’t have much of a shot of landing anyways, whether he went to the Ducks or another group.

Syracuse basketball showing interest in talented 2024 PF Caleb Middleton (itlh; Adler)

Caleb Middleton is only a freshman in high school, but he’s already landing offers and interest from high-major teams, including Syracuse basketball.

Syracuse basketball is displaying interest in Caleb Middleton, a power forward in the 2024 class who is regarded as one of the top prospects in New England within this recruiting cycle, according to a report.

The 6-foot-10 Middleton, a freshman at the New Hampton School in New Hampton, N.H., recently spoke with national analyst Rob Cassidy about his recruitment, and Middleton notes the Orange in this interview.

To date, despite his recruiting process at the beginning stages, Middleton has scholarship offers from Big East Conference member DePaul, as well as from Bryant and Siena.

Additionally, other squads that are showing interest in Middleton include Syracuse basketball, Penn State, Connecticut, Indiana, Georgia, Seton Hall, Marquette, Boston College and Oregon. That’s a pretty impressive list for him.

Old Penfield Manufacturing building will be redeveloped; will that house on the roof stay? (PS; $; Moriarty)

A historic Syracuse factory complex that once produced carriages and autos but is better known for a mysterious house on its roof is being targeted for a $50 million redevelopment.

The old factory would be turned into 128 mixed-income apartments. And, relax, the house on top is staying.

Housing Visions Consultants Inc., a nonprofit housing developer, and ADHV Redev CNY LLC, a joint venture between Syracuse developers Steve Case and Ryan Benz, are proposing to turn the former H.A. Moyer factory at 1714 N. Salina St. into a mixed-use development called Moyer Carriage Lofts.

The developers would demolish four of the eight buildings on the site, leaving four historic buildings while clearing the way for a 75- to 80-space parking lot and a private courtyard on the interior of the complex, according to an application for a resubdivision filed with the Syracuse Planning Commission.

The historic buildings — all built at the northwest corner of North Salina and Wolf streets on the city’s Northside between 1883 and 1909 — would be turned into 90 one-bedroom and 38 two-bedroom apartments, along with some office and commercial spaces.

There will be a mix of rent levels, but all will be affordable to people with incomes that are below 60% of the area’s median income, according to the plans. Specific rent amounts were not disclosed in the plans filed with the Planning Commission.
