Welcome to National Dessert Day!

There is no shame in having a sweet tooth today—it is National Dessert Day! Desserts are sweet foods that are commonly eaten at the end of a meal. There are countless types, including foods such as cakes, pastries, cookies, and pies. The word "dessert" is derived from the French word "desservir", which means "to clear the table". Fruits and honey were probably the first sweeteners used in food, and the dawn of desserts was bolstered by the expansion of the use of sugar. Sugar was in use in India before 500 BCE, and through trade, it arrived in places such as Macedonia and China over the next thousand years or so. It wasn't until at least the 12th century that it arrived in Europe. During the Industrial Revolution, desserts began being mass produced, and they were able to be processed and preserved in new ways, which increased their popularity.

Jim Boeheim on the start of official practice, remaking schedule, more (PS; $; Waters)

The word normal isn’t used often these days, but on Wednesday the Syracuse University basketball team will return to its normal practice routine.

The coronavirus pandemic put a premature end to the 2019-20 season, eliminated off-season workouts and wiped out almost the entire summer.

It was almost exactly a month ago when the NCAA’s Division I Council voted to allow college basketball teams to resume their normal 20 hours per week of practice time; the standard allotment for preseason and in-season practice schedules.

Since Sept. 21, the Syracuse coaching staff has been permitted to hold practice for up to eight hours per game. Prior to that, the NCAA had limited practice time to just four hours a week.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim is looking forward to the increased time with his team.

"With four hours, it was pretty much just individual work,'' Boeheim said in a telephone interview on Tuesday. "Going to eight hours was a good move because we didn’t have as much time as we normally have with the players in the summer. We now had more time and more structure.

"Now that we can go up to the full 20 hours (per week), we’ll just expand what we’ve been doing.''

ITLH Big East Power Rankings: Week 1 Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2021 commit Benny Williams had a ton of positive things to say about the Orange in a recent interview.

Syracuse basketball 2021 commit Benny Williams is a confident, hard-working and humble young man who has some big plans for his upcoming tenure on the Hill.

The 6-foot-8 small forward, rated as five stars and a top-25 player nationally in the 2021 cycle according to , says that while growing up, the Orange amounted to his dream school.

In a recent virtual interview with Zach Schumaker, Williams said that among the former Syracuse basketball stars that he admired during his younger years is Dion Waiters, who was a lottery pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and is currently a member of the LeBron James-led Los Angeles Lakers, which just won the 2020 league title.

In early June, Williams chose the ‘Cuse over his other three finalists in Georgetown, Maryland and Miami. Williams told Schumaker that if he didn’t pick Syracuse basketball, he would have ended up at Maryland, which is his father’s alma mater.

Axe: Syracuse basketball’s return sweet music to SU fans' ears (PS; $; Axe)

Not that it would take much for a Syracuse fan to go against the infamous rant of a Georgetown alum but, yes, we are talking about practice.

The Syracuse men’s basketball team kicks it up a notch on Wednesday as it is now allowed 20 hours of practice time a week, up from the eight hours allotted prior to today.

Syracuse still doesn’t have a schedule to consult, not even an exhibition to circle on the calendar (that’s 2020 for you). It does have a date―November 25. That’s when games can tip-off in the 2020-21 season, so that’s something.

Syracuse basketball is recruiting 2023 PG Aden Holloway ‘hard,’ he says (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2023 target Aden Holloway is receiving a lot of interest from ACC teams.

In the summer of 2019, Syracuse basketball became the first college squad to offer a scholarship to 2023 point guard Aden Holloway, and analysts say that Holloway’s recruitment is only going to continue to grow.

Although the 6-foot Holloway, a sophomore at the Covenant Day School in Matthews, N.C., isn’t ranked by some of the main recruiting services at this juncture, that should absolutely change. Some analysts foresee him as a four-star prospect, as well as one of the premier point guards in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

For now, Prep Hoops places Holloway at No. 23 nationally in his class. The primary recruiting Web sites note that he presently holds offers from the Orange and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference teams Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, along with Winthrop and North Carolina A&T.

Syracuse Basketball: 2022 3-star Jai Smith notes Dior Johnson friendship (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is showing interest in local product Jai Smith, who now suits up for a prep school in North Carolina.

Syracuse basketball is potentially getting into the mix for 2022 three-star power forward Jai Smith, whose recruitment is expanding onto a national stage.

The 6-foot-9 Smith, who in the past played at Bishop Ludden Junior-Senior High School in Syracuse, transferred over the summer to the Bull City Prep Academy in Durham, N.C.

As a junior in high school, Smith still likely has a long way to go in his recruitment, but a bevy of high-major teams are involved, either by offering him a scholarship already or displaying interest.

According to a review of the main recruiting services, Smith has seen his offer list grow to nearly two-dozen, from high-quality squads such as Marquette, Arizona, Seton Hall, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Texas A&M, Alabama, Memphis, Xavier, Houston, Rutgers and Atlantic Coast Conference crews Wake Forest and Georgia Tech.

N.C. State optimistic as basketball practice finally begins abc11.com; Mazur)

How the college basketball season will play out is anyone's guess at this point. Teams can practice starting Wednesday, weeks later than would be typical.

Whenever that first game tips off, N.C. State will ride into the new campaign with a rare two-game win streak.

The Wolfpack was lucky enough to play a postseason game in March before the ACC Tournament was disrupted by COVID-19. In fact, the Pack was the final ACC team to win a game before things shut down. Everything changed after State's win against Pitt in Greensboro. Duke refused to take the floor to face the Wolfpack in the tournament's next round, and now, months later, head coach Kevin Keatts and his staff are playing catchup.

"Where the offseason hurt us a little bit is we normally would have eight weeks in the summer to work with our new guys," Keatts said. "Our older guys, it doesn't affect as much because those guys could use a little rest instead of going the eight weeks."

The veterans who suffered through a tough season will have plenty to prove. Finding enough quality outside shooters should be No. 1 on the to-do list for this current crop of Tar Heels.

With about a month and a half until the start of the DI men's college basketball season, Andy Katz broke down the best playmakers heading into the 2020-21 season, ranking 15 guards he sees as potential winners of this year's Bob Cousy Award.

Katz unveiled his rankings on the latest edition of the March Madness 365 podcast. He also was joined by Big East expert John Fanta, Villanova star guard Collin Gillespie and Turner Sports' Chad "March Chadness" Aycock to talk about potential contenders from smaller conferences. You can listen to the full episode below.

Here are Andy Katz's top 15 Bob Cousy Award candidates for the 2020-21 college basketball season:

15. Ja'vonte Smart — LSU, Junior

Ja'vonte Smart will look to be one of the best guards in the SEC this season. The 6-foot-4 junior hopes to lead the Tigers to a top-five finish in the SEC and maybe compete for an SEC tournament crown. Smart did a little bit of everything during his sophomore campaign, averaging 12.5 points, 1.1 steals and 4.2 assists per game.

14. Jalen Crutcher — Dayton, Senior

With no Obi Toppin, last season's Naismith Player of the Year, Jalen Crutcher will look to be the primary scorer for the Flyers this season. Even with Toppin in the lineup, Crutcher still put up solid numbers for Dayton last year, averaging 15.1 points and 4.9 assists per game.

13. Fatts Russell — Rhode Island, Senior

Fatts Russell is going to be a player to keep an eye on in the Atlantic 10 this season. The 5-foot-10 guard was Mr. Everything for the Rams last season, averaging 18.8 points, 4.6 assists and 2.9 steals per game. His speed and efficiency put him as the third-leading scorer in the A-10 last season.

Lawmakers approve transfer of property for JMA project, despite 2 objections (PS; $; Baker)

The Common Council agreed to give two pieces of city-owned land to JMA Wireless in order for the company to complete its new 5G facility just south of downtown Syracuse.

The council voted Tuesday to abandon the 1000 block of South Clinton Street and the 100 block of Cortland Avenue to JMA, despite the objections of two councilors: Joe Carni and Pat Hogan.

Hogan had stalled a vote on those blocks last month. The tactic was part of his ongoing fight to stop a homeless shelter from being relocated from South Clinton Street to 501 W. Genesee St.

The shelter currently sits on property JMA wants to use as part of its new facility. The shelter’s owner, Catholic Charities, proposed the relocation near the Park Avenue neighborhood.

“I had hoped with this delay that there would be a change in the status of the Catholic Charities location of the homeless shelter,” Hogan said. “Those hopes, of course, were dashed because the powers that be in this town decided that economic development for one part of town means community disaster for another part of town.”
