Welcome to National Candy Day!
You've been told again and again to not eat too much candy. However, today you can give in to your sweet tooth and eat as much as you want. Why? Because it's National Candy Day! Candy, confections which come in the form of bars, morsels, lozenges, and other figures, are usually eaten as a snack or treat and not during mealtime. They are made with sugar, syrup, or other sweet ingredients, and often contain chocolate, fruit, or nuts. Flour, eggs, milk, and natural and artificial flavorings are also commonly used to make candy.
Usually, sugar, or sucrose crystals, are dissolved into water to make candy. The duration of cooking and cooling of the sugar water, the heat it is cooked at, and the types of sweeteners, flavors, and other additives that are added determine the type of candy that is made. The hotter the sugar water becomes the more sugar can dissolve in it, and when the water begins to evaporate the syrup becomes highly concentrated. As it cools it becomes supersaturated with sugar. The sugar tries to recrystallize, but when it is cooled quickly it is prevented from doing so, and noncrystalline candies such as hard candy, lollipops, and caramel can be made. The adding of fructose and glucose can also help prevent crystallization.

Five-star Syracuse basketball commit Dior Johnson has enrolled at Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., according to multiple reports. Johnson, the Orange's lone pledge in the 2022 class, previously left Oak Hill Academy as he continues to recover from a stress fracture in his foot.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Johnson is slotted as the No. 5 overall prospect in his cycle as well as the No. 2 combo guard by the 247Sports Composite. He committed to SU in February and is being recruited primarily by Syracuse assistant Gerry McNamara.
“I picked Syracuse because I’ve been around those coaches since seventh grade,” Johnson told 247Sports' Evan Daniels at the time of his commitment. “I was 12, I played for City Rocks with Buddy Boeheim played at the time. I was always around the Syracuse guys, like all of the time, it’s his son so they’re around practice and everything. They always have had big interest in me even since I was really young.”

Kouwe: Quincy Guerrier's improvement key for Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)
It’s always a pleasure to chat with Andrew Kouwe, a guard on Syracuse’s 2003 national championship season who has been a staple on The Juice on the Cuse podcast over the past seven years. Andrew called into the podcast this week to preview the upcoming SU basketball season, and went through all of Syracuse’s key players with me.
Andrew says at this point, we know what to expect from Buddy Boeheim and Marek Dolezaj, but it will be interesting to see the improvements of Bourama Sidibe, Joe Girard III and especially Quincy Guerrier.
“The biggest thing for me is Quincy. How does he progress? What did he do over the summer? What did he do during quarantine to improve his game? Did he improve his jumper?” Kouwe said. “We all know about his athletic ability, but we’re going to need that scoring from him to get this team to be competitive with the Dukes and North Carolinas of the world.”
As we know, Guerrier was playing through injuries toward the end of last season that required offseason surgery. Yet he still averaged about seven points and five rebounds a game in roughly 20 minutes. If he takes a sophomore leap, that would be a huge boon for the Orange.

Dino Babers addressed the QB controversy between incumbent Rex Culpepper and freshman Jacobian Morgan. Will Morgan finally get a real chance to claim the job this week? Plus, Syracuse basketball's matchup in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. What does the Orange's matchup with Rutgers say about the program? Also, SU 2022 5-star PG commit Dior Johnson is headed back to California for high school. Could his fit at the school determine whether or not he actually suits up for the Orange?
Syracuse Basketball: Dior Johnson ‘most creative scorer in country’ (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball 2022 commit Dior Johnson is one of the top scorers in all of high-school basketball, regardless of class.
Syracuse basketball 2022 commit Dior Johnson, a five-star point guard who just enrolled in a new high school on the West Coast, is getting lauded by a recruiting expert as one of the most prolific scorers nationwide.
Travis Branham, a national analyst for 247Sports, recently published a piece where he looked at the top-five scorers throughout high-school basketball, with their class designation not coming into play.
The 6-foot-3 Johnson, who about a month ago left the Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., and will now suit up for an excellent team at Corona Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., is understandably included on Branham’s list.
By the way, Branham’s full ratings, in order, are 2022 small forward Emoni Bates, a Michigan State commit, 2021 shooting guard Jaden Hardy, who is undecided, Johnson, 2023 combo guard Mikey Williams, who is undecided, and 2022 point guard Bryce Griggs, who is undecided.
That Johnson is considered one of the premier bucket-getters around the country hopefully will excite Orange fans, and let’s just hope that he makes it to the Hill for at least one term, rather than forgoing college for a professional path.

Syracuse Basketball: New mock draft has Elijah Hughes going in 1st round (itlh; Adler)
The 2020 NBA Draft is fast approaching, and former Syracuse basketball wing Elijah Hughes is going to get selected.
At this point, it’s really a question of where former Syracuse basketball star Elijah Hughes is chosen in the upcoming NBA Draft, not if he is going to get picked.
Nothing is ever a guarantee until draft night, I concede that, however, all signs seem to indicate that the 6-foot-6 Hughes will hear his name called. Analysts and recent mock drafts suggest that Hughes is likely to get selected in either the late first round or in the early/middle part of the second round.
To that end, NBA Draft analyst and former pro agent Matt Babcock of Babcock Hoops has updated his mock-draft board, with Hughes going at No. 23 in the first round to the Utah Jazz.
The Orange has some recent history with Utah. During the 2017 NBA Draft, the Jazz picked former ‘Cuse player Tyler Lydon, a power forward, with the No. 24 selection in the first round, although Utah then traded him to the Denver Nuggets in a draft-night deal.

Ranking Syracuse teams of the last 11 years, and the lessons learned (The Athletic; $; Gutirrez)
Despite an NCAA investigation and a disappointing NIT appearance two years later, Syracuse has posted mostly strong seasons over the last decade. The Orange have made nine NCAA Tournament appearances since 2009 and become an intriguing postseason team after sometimes underachieving in the regular season. Not to mention, the program’s NCAA active record of 50 consecutive winning seasons is a remarkable sign of consistency.
The final product over the past 11 years is something many teams haven’t accomplished in their program’s history: a pair of Final Fours, three additional Sweet 16 appearances and a 2010 club headed straight toward the national championship until center Arinze Onuaku suffered a season-ending leg injury.

VIDEO – Jose Alvarado Preseason Press Conference (ramblinwreck.com; video)
A tough, gritty, high motor point guard who has been an ironman and floor general for the Yellow Jackets for three seasons, senior Jose Alvarado made the All-ACC third team last season after finishing 8th in the conference in scoring (16.05 ppg), No. 6 in field goal percentage (.465), No. 8 in assists (4.32) and No. 1 in steals (2.37) in ACC games. For the season, he averaged 14.4 points and career-high 4.0 assists in 33.5 minutes per game.
Alvarado has started all but one game he has been available to play in his career (has missed 15 due to injury). Rarely leaving the floor unless he has foul trouble or is injured, he has played the entire 40 minutes (45 in one overtime game) 14 times in his career. Alvarado has risen to 10th place on Tech’s career list for steals (152) and enters his senior year with 1,021 career points. He has 51 career double-figure scoring games (16 as a freshman, 20 as a sophomore) and has topped 20 points 18 times.

SYRACHA’CUSE hot sauce company opens storefront in Camillus (DO; Wagner)
Michael Sharlow and his daughter Marissa have long shared a culinary passion and love for spice. After establishing their gourmet hot sauce company SYRACHA’CUSE in 2015, the father and daughter duo opened the company’s first brick-and-mortar store in late October.
Located in Camillus, the Market & Tasting Bar sells between 12 and 14 unique flavors of hot sauces, which are all vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free. It also offers a subscription box service, where participants receive a new flavor of sauce every month. SYRACHA’CUSE coordinates the monthly subscription box sauce flavors with the season and will introduce a holiday hot sauce right before Thanksgiving.
The name SYRACHA’CUSE comes from the family’s long-standing connection to the city of Syracuse. Michael spent most of his adult life in the city, along with his wife, who attended Syracuse University, and their daughter Marissa was born and raised here.
